Akademie Street Boutique Hotel in Franschhoek is named for the fact that it is located on the same road as the town’s high school. This is perhaps rather poignant, as the hotel has proven time and time again that it is one of the best teachers of exactly what a luxury home-away-from-home getaway should be.

Eclectically Emerald

Upon our arrival at Akademie Street Boutique Hotel, we were welcomed by Declan, our host, who’s lilting Irish accent immediately made us feel welcome.

As we stepped through the doors, we were immediately captivated by the striking colour; the walls are painted a deep shade green, with gilded gold accents, framed artwork and curated décor pieces – what I imagine the inside of the Emerald City would have looked like.

It’s a bit mysterious, a bit eclectic and somehow all works together.

Room for Joy

The hotel is divided into 9 rooms; each room is named in Afrikaans for an emotion or feeling expressed by the original owner during his time running the hotel. And, although the hotel has passed on ownership, the original names remain.

The layout of the hotel almost gives it a contained micro-village feel, and our room, Vreugde (joy), is the ‘honeymoon villa’ and is the last word in luxury and comfort.

Enclosed within its own walled courtyard, complete with private pool and wood-fire heated spa pool. It allows for the utmost privacy.

Inside the room, the eclectic and charming decor of the hotel continues – a four-poster king-size bed with crisp white linen and accents of green. The room included a kitchenette with a stocked complimentary bar fridge and a gorgeous bathroom, complete with a to-die-for gold bath that King Midas would have approved of.

It’s All in the Details

Directly opposite Vreugde is Akademie’s crowning jewel, The Orangerie – an incredibly beautiful glass conservatory that is home to overflowing greenery, warmed by the sun and just begging to be relaxed in.

In the late afternoon, sundowners are offered in The Orangerie and cocktails (and mocktails), made especially for Akademie are served, as well as wine and MCC.

We took the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and kick back with a game of Scrabble and a gin cocktail.

The Akademie team are on hand to refill snacks, pour drinks and assist. It really is a lovely way to unwind before perhaps walking into the village for dinner.

When you are back from dinner, return to The Orangerie or the lounge or courtyard in the main building for a nightcap – you can enjoy a whiskey or cognac before you retire to your room for a night of blissful sleep.

Don’t mind if I dip

Thanks to Declan’s advice, we had been tending to the fire that heats the plunge pool all day, so the water was just the right temperature for a late evening dip – completed with a glass of red wine and some local chocolate. Just one of the many offerings that has earned Akademie its place as one of the most romantic hotels you can visit.

Breakfast in The Orangerie

In the morning, the sun filters in through the glass walls of The Orangerie making it quite the most blissful place to enjoy Akademie’s legendary breakfast.

Courses are served to you at your table and include the most delicious homemade muesli, yoghurt and stewed fruits. Following that, is a gorgeous seasonal fruit platter and then still cooked options, which include everything from a South African fry-up complete with boerewors to pancakes, waffles, smoothies and more.

You can enjoy a glass of MCC, a freshly squeezed juice, smoothie or even a Bloody Mary. If you can think if it, Akademie offers it and everything has been locally sourced.

Opened in October 2018, this sister Cape Town property to Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay, is every bit as stylish, boasting panoramic views and an idyllic peacefulness.

Setting Sail

True to its location in the quaint seaside village of Simon’s Town, the property is nautically driven and rooms are named after famous ships. Our room, Drommedaris, was elegant and beautifully decorated with rich textures in shades of blue and white.

Thoughtful consideration has gone into each element from plush velvet cushions in the deepest royal blue to structural steel suspension rods that contrast against the white pitched timber roof and add contemporary flair.

Endless Ocean Views

The room’s gorgeous private balcony afforded us views directly onto the penguin walkway, where we could watch these wonderful waddlers as they enjoyed their protected alcove of beach and sea.

The balcony also extends to a central area with a lovely swimming pool, which in warmer summer months is perfectly placed to soak up the sun. Large cushioned day beds outside on the private balcony were ideal for catching up on some much-needed reading time, as the weather was not swim-friendly (except for penguins!).

Tintswalo at Boulders has been cleverly designed in that it can be separated into a luxury villa, ideal for the traveller or family that wants space and privacy. The villa is kitted out with every amenity possible and a butler is on hand to ensure that your stay is as relaxing as possible and that your every need is anticipated.

As the owners of Tintswalo have children themselves, they have specifically catered for families travelling with youngsters that still want to enjoy a luxurious stay.

The lower level of the home has been fitted with rooms that kids will just love. Currently, the hotel is only offering breakfast, but breakfast is such a feast that it will set you up for a day of exploring the area without a thought about lunch.

We enjoyed such a restful night’s sleep in the quiet of  Tintswalo at Boulders and awoke to the most beautifully cool but clear late- Autumn morning. After an indulgently long lie-in, we headed downstairs, where the team on duty had set up a stunning table for two in a cosy alcove of the villa.

They had prepared the most delicious brekkie for us – fresh fruits and granola, followed by a heaped platter of the most beautifully crisp pastries, some of the best we’ve ever had. All this followed by a cooked breakfast, as well as local cheeses and charcuterie. An absolute treat!

Nothing is too much for the team and the small touches, like port decanters to take the chill out of a cool day, plenty of current reading material and canapés at sundown are just a few of the small ways that they go the extra mile.

When picturing a getaway to a private reserve, it’s easy to assume the standard game safaris, big 5-spotting, watering holes and khaki-kitted tourists fastened to their binoculars. Okay, you’ll find plenty of tourists peeping through their binocs at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, but you’ll see that the spectacular species they’re observing is a little out of your ordinary reserve experience.

It’s the reason why National Geographic has placed them on the map as one of the world’s most unique reserve destinations on the planet, and it’s eminently clear to see why.

A Unique Floral Getaway

Found en route to Gansbaai, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is secluded in the mountainside, surrounded by over 2500 hectares of dense fynbos unique to the Walker Bay region. Here, the attraction is less about African game but rather highlights an unparalleled experience of the unique floral splendour with conservation front-of-mind.

The scenes were surreal on our drive into the reserve with the Atlantic Ocean, rolling sand dunes and the Cape Floral Kingdom in all its glory as our backdrop.

Warm Welcomes

With Autumn firmly settled in, the temperature outside had dipped well below comfort-levels along with the sun, so our friendly welcome into the toasty Grootbos Forest Lodge reception was well-received.

Once placed next to a crackling fire with our welcome beverages, we were acquainted with our knowledgeable guide, Jono, who ran through our itinerary for the weekend.

A stay at Grootbos offers a number of all-inclusive activities that you’re going to want to take advantage of. 4×4 botanical tours, guided walks through the milkwood forests, horseback riding, whale-watching and cave exploring are just a few of the activities available during your stay.

The Forest Lodge Fairytale

After a session of tailor-made activity-planning, we made way to our private Forest suite hidden in the foliage of the resort. Dangling branches from milkwood trees enclose the pathway that links 16 free-standing suites to the reception and Bloom Forest Spa.

Each suite is nestled amongst the greenery to ensure an uninterrupted and magical forest experience.

Upon entry to our luxury abode, the first thing I noticed was the same nostalgic fynbos-scent found throughout the reserve – thanks to the fresh flowers placed in our private lounge. One of the many understated gestures that made the stay that little bit more luxurious.

The entrance leads through to the living area complete with exquisite furnishings, fireplace, reading material and a fully stocked mini-bar. Sliding doors open onto a private deck surrounded by forest and fynbos, fully immersing guests in the flora experience.

A botanical-inspired theme is apparent throughout the suites, with soft natural colour tones and warm textures flowing through the lounge, bedroom and bathroom.

Each room in the suite opens up to views overlooking the expanse of shrubland and the South Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

After popping a bottle of MCC and toasting to our weekend in floral paradise, we kicked back and readied ourselves for our first 5-course dinner of the weekend at the Forest Lodge Restaurant.

Forest Lodge Dining Experience

During your stay at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, your rate includes meticulously prepared breakfasts, 3-course lunches and 5-course dinners daily. You’ll find that everything on the menu, if not grown on-site from the Growing the Future social upliftment project, is sourced locally and homemade in the kitchen.

Chef Benjamin Conradie and his team have a finesse with food and each course we savoured during our first evening at the Forest Lodge Restaurant was worthy of mention.

From the starter menu, the potato & leek velouté with truffle cream and crispy curried duck springrolls with roast aubergine purée were noteworthy. With the fear of missing out, we threw in a side of freshly shucked oysters with passionfruit kombucha for good measure.

For our mains, we sampled the crispy confit pork belly, as well as the pan-fried prawns served with a prawn and saffron bisque, linguine nero and dune spinach. Everything was delicious, well-portioned and beautifully prepared.

Dessert is always a special occasion for me, and no matter if my stomach has surpassed its full-capacity, I will always find space.

I indulged in one of the most divine chocolate fondants I’ve ever tasted, accompanied by an orange and lavender preserve, fynbos shortbread and vanilla ice cream.

Sufficiently stuffed, we made our way back to our room to settle in for a sweet and satisfying slumber in our fairytale bed.

Rise & Shine

Waking up for breakfast was an exciting affair. The dining area sported an impressive spread with options for every kinda brekkie-lover. Seasonal fresh fruit, pre-assembled smoothie bowls, homemade yoghurt and granola, local cheeses, cold meats and freshly baked pastries are available.

We sampled some fresh fruit with Grootbos’ signature fynbos honey before ordering off the breakfast menu. It’s an obsession of mine to sample eggs Benedict at every breakfast establishment I dine at and I can say with certainty that theirs was up there with some of my favourites.

Sunshine Safari

After a satisfying breakfast, we joined our guide, Jono, on a botanical 4×4 safari-seminar through the Cape Floral Kingdom. The drive took us through the reserve to admire the vast array of fynbos species apparent in the region.

The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the most botanically diverse biomes in the world, with 6 unique species having been discovered in Grootbos alone. The need for conservation here, of course, is imperative.

Apart from the flora, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is also home to numerous animal species including the elusive Cape Leopard. The Cape Leopard frequents parts of Grootbos and is monitored dutifully for research and conservation purposes as we learn at our stopover at the Grootbos nursery, part of the Grootbos Foundation.

Conservation at the Core

Aside from the luxury guest-experience offered by Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, key efforts are directed at conserving the flora and fauna on the reserve, together with uplifting the community.

This is done through the various projects created by the Grootbos Foundation, whose aim is to develop sustainable livelihoods through ecotourism while maintaining the conservation of the regions fynbos species.

After an incredibly insightful 4×4 tour, we made our way to unwind with a glass of wine and a well-deserved 3-course feast overlooking the ocean on the Forest Lodge restaurant deck.

Seaside Sundowners

We retired to our room after a gorgeous 3-course lunch for a quick recess before our next activity by the seaside.

After a quick session of R&R, we met with Jono again for a trip to De Kelders to visit the prehistoric Klipgat caves once inhabited by our tribal predecessors.

Thereafter, we were taken through to the most breathtaking viewpoint amidst the dunes to partake in a sunset Inverroche gin tasting overlooking the ocean before heading back for our final evening.

Unique Dining

We strolled through to the Forest Lodge restaurant for our final dinner where a surprise dining experience awaited us. Our lovely sommelier, Nicole, led us down a candle-lit staircase and guided us through to the Forest Lodge Cellar.

Here, a private table was meticulously set with silver candleholders and fresh fynbos flowers as our centrepiece. The main attraction, however, was most certainly the surrounding display of our regions finest wines.

We settled in for a 5-course Forest Cellar Tasting Menu with a bread course while Nicole, our sommelier, walked us through the courses and wine pairings. The first standout dish was the saffron marinated crispy calamari with roast garlic puree and pernod cream paired with Ghost Corner Semillon 2012. A powerful yet balanced combination of flavours from the saffron and garlic purée that I couldn’t get enough of.

The other equally exceptional dish was the grilled beef fillet with crispy mustard potatoes, shiitake, creamed spinach and braised onion jus.

This was paired with a glass of Villion Syrah 2012, a wine so perfect I pleaded Nicole to leave us the carafe (thank you, Nicole).

After a couple spoonfuls of our delicious dessert, we were ready to rest our heavy eyelids after a blissful day of excitement.

A Sweet Send-Off

A guided tour through the reserve on horseback was our choice of activity for our last morning in paradise. After breakfast, we were taken by our lovely guides to saddle up and venture on a ride through the reserve. The view from the top overlooking the vista of fynbos and ocean was something to behold.

A bitter-sweet send-off from our wonderful team left us content from what was one of the best weekends I’ve experienced in a long time. For a truly unique perspective of our Cape Floral Kingdom, I urge you to visit the spectacular floral wonderland that is Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

There is something about the smell of thatch that just instantly whisks you away to the countryside. Being surrounded by lush vineyards, rolling greenery and spectacular mountain views also helps and, at Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek, they have all of these in abundance. We recently visited this beautiful property to experience all that is on offer.

Virgin Limited Edition Group

Mont Rochelle is part of Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive Virgin Limited Edition group and includes other properties such as Necker Island, The Lodge in the Swiss Alps and Ulusaba Game Reserve locally.

The properties exude the utmost in luxury but maintain that signature Virgin spirit.

It shows that high end doesn’t have to mean stuffy and embodies the group’s principles of adventure and above-and-beyond experiences, something that really shone through during our stay.

Location

Mont Rochelle is set just a short drive up from the main town of Franschhoek. The views are hard to encapsulate in words or images really, they are the kind that make you sigh internally with a sense of peace.

The gardens of Mont Rochelle are part of what make the views so spectacular; perfect lawns lead to hedges surrounding the property that are trimmed with lavender, fynbos and local succulents in an array of colour, just begging to be Instagrammed.

We spent quite a bit of time just wandering around the gardens and enjoying the natural beauty. With the recent, much-needed rains we’ve had, they are truly abundant.

Keeping things fun

Immaculate grass lawns, complete with croquet set, lawn boules and outdoor games sets make for plenty of fun to be had. We tried our hand at all of them and decided that croquet is a lot harder than it looks!

There is a lovely turf tennis court with rackets and balls just waiting for you to perfect your forehand. You’d be hard-pressed to find a court with a more impressive view or surroundings and you’ll be forgiven for missing that perfect return, as it’s really easy to get distracted by everything around you.

Even though there is a really well-equipped gym facility on site, we opted to harness our inner Djokovic and Williams and play a few games as our exercise for the weekend. There is no doubt that lungfuls of fresh country air does wonders for the soul.

Accommodation at Mont Rochelle

The rooms at Mont Rochelle are separated into three sections; there are rooms located in the main hotel building under a gorgeous thatched roof. Top floor located rooms have the benefit of the beautifully slanted roof and we were lucky enough to be staying in one of these. The doors of the two balconies in our room opened up to reveal the Franschhoek valley in all its glory.

The room was beautifully decorated with fun touches like colourful bulldog ornaments and vases of fresh proteas.

The bed was super comfortable, and in fact, provided the most comfortable night’s sleep I have had in ages. A gorgeous Victorian bath (out of use for now due to the drought) and a spacious walk-in shower with Africology amenities (my favourite) complete the bathroom.

There is a second set of rooms located below the tennis court area, under the gardens. These rooms are the last word in luxury and privacy. Beautifully decorated with hand-picked finishings, mini private pools for dipping when things heat up in summer and views over the valley. They are a truly an exclusive way to escape and enjoy the valley.

The final area is located a short drive from the main hotel – The Manor House is an exquisite 4-bedroomed private villa, which benefits from its own pool, gym and entertainment areas. The whole villa is immaculately appointed and every need possible will be met by the team during your stay.

The Spa at Mont Rochelle

No one ever needs to convince me of the benefits of a spa treatment and at Mont Rochelle the spa is small, which makes the experience there lovely and personal. Bronwyn, the head therapist will look after you and make sure that you have a wonderfully relaxing time.

A specialty Africology Cape Malay Spice Journey treatment has been created specifically for Mont Rochelle and is only available here. It consists of an amazing wrap with kaolin mud that has been infused with spices that you and your therapist will select together. Part of the treatment takes place in the hammam with twinkling lighting, which creates a genuine feeling of tranquillity.

If you’re in need of some skin rejuvenation I highly recommend the deluxe facial, which is what I enjoyed. In a cocoon of quiet and heavenly scent, my skin was cleaned exfoliated, massaged and moisturised. It was thoroughly relaxing in every way.

Mornings at Mont Rochelle

We woke up to the most beautiful country morning at Mont Rochelle; dew brushed grass, clear skies and the smell of fresh pastries at Miko Restaurant (which also serves lunch and dinner).

Because we knew breakfast would be a feast, we had to assuage some of the guilt with a morning round of tennis and after that, sat down to enjoy.

Breakfast was a selection of fresh fruits, yoghurt, pastries and a cooked option. We sat overlooking the valley and marvelling at the beauty. It definitely is a restorative way to begin the day.

All about the people

One of Sir Richard Branson’s guiding principles in creating the Virgin brand is investing in people. Creating a working environment that nurtures talent is key and this is certainly evident at Mont Rochelle.

We were looked after by Peter, the Guest Relations Manager at Mont Rochelle, whose role it is to ensure that you have a great stay. Nothing is too much effort for him and his big, friendly Kenyan personality embodies Virgin completely.

In fact, everyone we dealt with at Mont Rochelle carried this spirit and are a credit to the Virgin experience.

When I knew we were heading to Babylonstoren Farm Hotel & Spa on possibly the rainiest weekend of the year so far, I had my husband pulling out dusty suitcases from the recesses of our cupboards in search of a pair of wellies I know I own. I needn’t have worried though because, at Babylonstoren, every last detail is thought of – including placing pairs of Wellington boots in every room.

It is a working farm after all and the team are well-versed in hosting city slickers who’s wellies gather dust for most of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I love city living but I also harbour desires to wake up to the sound of a cockerel crowing, to take deep lungfuls of fresh country air and enjoy things at a slower pace. At Babylonstoren that’s all in a day’s work and then some.

Slowing Down at Babylonstoren Farm Hotel & Spa

Babylonstoren is synonymous with style and it literally oozes this at every turn. The whole farm has been imbued with its very own brand of farm chic that is just unmistakably ‘Babylonstoren’. From the iconic pink oyster mushroom cover of Babel, the cookbook, to the Delft blue tin that holds the farms cold extracted olive oil. Everything is purposeful, considered and beautiful.

The nature of it

The heart of Babylonstoren is the garden and much of the flow of the farm stems from it. It is a literal living, breathing entity in every sense and is the lifeforce of the farm.

The garden truly is mesmerising as anyone who has visited will tell you. There is something incredibly soothing about the symmetry of it, rich red gravel paths are meticulously mapped out creating mini gardens within the garden, each with their place and purpose.

From abundant herbs to flourishing citrus trees, cacti taller than you and beautiful plum flowers budding just ahead of spring. It’s a heady combination of textures, colours, sounds and smells and nothing will ground you quite like a stroll through it.

Babylonstoren Farm Hotel

The Babylonstoren Farm Hotel & Spa consists of 22 cottage suites of varying sizes that are all immaculately designed. We loved how our suite seamlessly blended uber contemporary pieces with traditional farmstead elements.

Glass doors with chromed steel hinges sit juxtaposed to heavy wooden doors, clear acrylic chairs are set against farm-style wooden tables with turned legs. Ultra-modern, mirrored, all-white bathroom was quite at home inside the whitewashed walls and thatched roof of our cottage. The result is a stylish, modern space that echos that unique Babylonstoren sensibility.

The Heavens Hath Opened

We arrived at Babylonstoren right at the peak of a much-needed deluge of rain and were met at our car by a team member, clipboard in hand, ready to take us to our room. Once we donned our Wellington boots (I never did find mine) we headed to the wine cellar for a cellar tour.

We were joined by three other couples and our guide, Kerwin, took us through a tour of the farm, from viewing the hill of Babylon for which Babylonstoren is named, through the olive extraction room to the cellar and finally the tasting room.

Candid about Candide

From the fire-warmed centre of the glassed tasting room, we were taken through a flight of Babylonstoren wines. We decided our favourite was the Shiraz but also loved the latest addition to the range – Candide, an unusual blend of four white varietals, namely Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay and Semillon. The fruity notes of the wine had us longing for summer days, which we know will be upon us sooner than we think.

If you’re wondering about the relevance, it is named for an observation made by Candide, the title character in the book of the same name, by French philosopher and writer, Voltaire, when he said that we should all tend our gardens. Being that the garden is the centre of the farm, it seems fitting.

Dining at Babel

Babel restaurant is another iconic extension of the Babylonstoren story and is probably one of the most compelling ways to experience the ethos of the farm.

The philosophy is very simple and the menu adheres to this – it is about celebrating the bounty of the garden in the most natural and connected way.

The starter section of the menu is simply titled, Yellow, Red, Green and each dish is built around fruit and veggies from the garden in these colours. The red dish brings together radicchio, tree-ripened almonds, beetroots and Franschhoek trout. Yellow is a warm citrus and root veggie-take on carpaccio.

For mains, we enjoyed succulent and generous portions of pork belly and bone-in fillet, which are served with an abundance of garden veggies and crackingly good potato wedges. Every detail of every course speaks to the natural treatment of ingredients and minimal intervention. The produce of the garden shines on the plate as much as it does in the soil.

Goodnight, Sleep Tight

Wellies had not felt like appropriate dinner gear, so we had opted not to don them for the evening. In hindsight, however, we might have been smarter and left our lofty city notations in our cottage. Instead, we had to make a mad and rather muddy dash from Babel to our room, as the heavens had opened and rain was coming down in torrents with absolutely no respite. There’s nothing like 6 ºC weather, bucketing rain and the promise of a cosy bed at the end of it to make you run with haste!

We enjoyed an incredibly restful night’s sleep in one of the most comfortable beds ever; our room had been warmed by a crackling fire in the indoor fireplace. Our bed, toasty from fluffy hot water bottles, was the perfect sanctuary from the elements and we happily went to sleep to the sounds of precious rainfall.

A Babel Style Breakfast

Breakfast at Babel had so many highlights, from homemade farm granola and fermented jersey yoghurt to croissants, blue gum honey and an array of fresh fruits and veggies from the garden. This all before a traditional farm-style cooked breakfast too.

After tucking in we explored a little more of the farm, including meeting Morne and Meisiekind the donkeys, spotting turkeys, hens and roosters, and visiting the farm shop, butchery and bakery. Phew!

There is still so much more to discover at Babylonstoren and we really just scratched the tip of the koppie so to speak. From trout fishing to guided garden tours, the spa, ritual tea ceremonies and the greenhouse, you need more than just a day to fully embrace all that it has to offer.

One thing is for certain though, you’ll leave feeling relaxed, well-fed, reconnected to the earth and with a profound appreciation for Mother Nature.

Knysna is one of those special towns that just seems infused with a peaceful magic that imbues the whole of the Garden Route. As you drive down the N2 and round the bend into Knysna, the lagoon comes into view and you can just immediately feel yourself sigh at the prettiness of this unique place.

Rising from the Ashes

Despite the ravaging fires of 2017, the town still exudes its happy hippy vibe and it just draws you in. Like many popular hot spots, the town is filled with hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses, many of which boast great locations. One of the trendiest and most central spots is Thesen Island, the marina development where The Lofts Boutique Hotel is located.

The Lofts at Thesen Island

Work began on the Thesen Island marina in the late 1990s and the ultra-sensitive eco-lagoon project saw the development of homes, retail, restaurants and hotel accommodation. One such spot is The Lofts Boutique Hotel, which is perfectly positioned with expansive views over the Knysna lagoon.

With its white Cape Cod clapboard-style look and dreamy location, it’s hard not to be lulled into a relaxed holiday trance by the ebb and flow of the water viewed from the sun-soaked balcony.

Style of The Lofts Boutique Hotel

The Lofts Boutique Hotel consists of 18 rooms of varying sizes and styles (including some self-catering units) and are decorated in a way that suits the modern traveller and echoing the maritime surroundings.

The building was once a boat building shed and much of this original historical framework has been preserved and refurbished, resulting in the retail and hotel space that it is today.

Our lagoon facing room was fronted by a large balcony area complete with wrap around seating and sun loungers, perfect for sundowners.

We promptly requested ice, chilled a bottle of Chardonnay and waited for the sun to set; a perfect early evening way to appreciate the gorgeous surroundings. Boats dock right in front of the hotel and if you fancy, you can even hire a canoe from the hotel and take a paddle around the lagoon.

Eat, Drink and Explore

The central location of The Lofts Boutique Hotel make it perfect for exploring Knysna and the close proximity of several good restaurants and bars means you can park your car and take a walk to enjoy a meal. Nearby are several great options and the friendly hotel team can suggest recommendations depending on what you’re in the mood for.

We were after something laid back and so took a stroll to Sirroco Restaurant where we enjoyed some sushi to start and tasty burgers. The walk back to the hotel is a great way to assuage burger-calorie guilt!

Bountiful Breakfast

One of the most recognisable names in Knysna has to be Il de Pain bakery; travellers come from all over for a taste of their divine pastries, breads and sweet treats. When you stay at The Lofts Boutique Hotel, you’ll notice it is actually connected to Il de Pain via the atrium lobby. So, you can choose to have breakfast here or at three other venues – namely in the atrium area of the hotel itself, at The Islands Café or at Caffé Mario, all also located nearby. This gives guests staying for a longer period of time a few places to choose from.

The early morning dewy views of the lagoon from our room were enough to get us out of bed nice and early but it was the alluring smell of freshly baked croissants and coffee that really got us moving.

The hotel provided vouchers allowing us to choose exactly what we wanted from the menu and believe me, it’s a tough choice. The breakfasts really are bountiful and it is impossible not to leave with a few takeaway pastries and baked goods to enjoy later.

Exploring the area from The Lofts Boutique Hotel

The unique set-up of the rooms at The Lofts Boutique Hotel means it caters for a variety of travellers from couples in search of a romantic getaway, to families and even those visiting the area for a business trip.

The rooms are spacious with a fresh, modern feel and lots of contemporary finishings that up the overall cool factor.

There is a spa located within the Boatshed if you want to indulge in a little me-time, there is also a pool area for hot summer days complete with sun loungers and a magnificent view.

If you ever read Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree as a child, you probably entertained ideas of climbing to the top of a tree in your garden and finding a magical place of wonder. What a lovely idea… even if just in the imagination. As an adult faced with the daily grind, it can become challenging to find that bit of magic but, at Tsala Treetop Lodge, you might be surprised at what you discover. And, even though you won’t find Silky and Moonface in the foliage, your childhood fantasies will come pretty close to being fulfilled, as you are guaranteed to experience plenty of wonderment at this unique place.

Discovering Tsala Treetop Lodge

Tsala Treetop Lodge is located just before Plettenberg Bay; the dense forests surrounding it are a signature of the Garden Route and could not be a more perfect location for the lodge. The day we arrived was cold and rainy and yet this didn’t detract from the surroundings at all, if anything it actually enhanced them.

Walking down the stone pathway into the receiving area of Tsala Treetop Lodge has a mystical quality to it; giant delicious monsters, fern fronds and beautiful dense greenery line the pathway, lighting almost gives the illusion of fire either side of the path and the pitched thatch roof, above large ornate timber doors, stand as a welcoming entrance.

There is something tropically-Amazonian and yet uniquely African about it and it sets the tone for your stay.

Upon arrival we were immediately ushered to a cosy lounge area, warmed by roaring fires and given a welcome drink of our choice. There is no formal reception area and any paperwork for your check-in is completed in this area – this ensures that your stay starts in the most relaxed way possible. Once our bags had been collected from the car they were delivered to our room and we were taken by our hostess to our abode for the night.

A Magical Escape in the Woods

Tsala Treetop Lodge consists of 10 Tsala suites and 6 2-bedroomed villas, which are set along a meandering, elevated wooden walkway. Each truly is its own private oasis and means utter escape and tranquillity for guests.

A stunning infinity dipping pool, which seems to drops off into the green abyss below, is the first thing you notice as you go through the gates to your timber suite area. As tempting as it was, the weather was just not warm enough to give it a go but come summer, I’d bet it’s hard to leave it.

Our timber suite was luxuriously kitted out and cleverly blended a stylish African feel with every modern amenity you could need. A lounge area, with a deck that overlooks kilometres of dense forest, led onto the bedroom followed by the most gorgeous adjoining bathroom.

The bathroom alone makes you not want to leave, complete with large stone tub, indoor and outdoor showers and stunning hand-beaten copper taps that complement the timber elements.

After opening a bottle of red wine and enjoying some snacks in the room, we retired to a comfortable couch with books and the intention to completely unwind.

Dining at Tsala Treetop Lodge

There are a few options for dining at Tsala Treetop Lodge; you can opt to eat in the main dining area of the hotel, at a separate restaurant located on the property called Zinzi Restaurant, or at the fine dining offering at Sage at Hunter’s Country House, another boutique hotel, also located on the property.

We were booked in to dine at Sage at Hunter’s and enjoyed an absolutely magical dining experience. A private dining room set just for two with a roaring fireplace and special touches like menus printed with our names. The team is clearly well-versed in going the extra mile, making it an absolutely superlative place to celebrate a special occasion.

We enjoyed a divine three-course meal, of which the most memorable courses were a succulent pork belly main, perfectly cooked salmon and a to-die-for crème brûlée.

Thoroughly full, we meandered through the gardens and back to the cosy comfort of our cabin, where the warmth of a roaring fireplace awaited us. The team had been in to do a lovely turn down complete with a millionaires shortbread treat and a bed warmed to toasty perfection by hot water bottles on each side.

It was absolute heaven to slip into the fluffy folds and sleep in utter peace in our magical treetop room.

Morning Exploring

After a beautiful breakfast spread of fresh fruits, pastries and a cooked breakfast, we felt we definitely needed to walk off some calories and so took a wander across the property. The grounds are vast and include both lodges and Zinzi restaurant.

Wandering the immaculately kept gardens led us to a gorgeous little forest chapel, specifically designed for special occasions such as weddings and christenings and with views over the valley.

As we headed back to our room we even spotted the sweetest deer that was the image of Disney’s Bambi, which just sealed our Tsala experience.

We regrettably had to make our way back to the real world and check out but GM Karin and the team ensured that we were ready to go, having had our bags packed into our vehicle and sending us off with a snack pack of cookies and water for the road. A delightful and thoughtful parting treat.

Final Thoughts

There was complete silence in the car as we left Tsala Treetop Lodge, other than perhaps a little sigh. The experience really is a unique and otherworldly one. Once you are in the warm embrace of the lodge it is easy to switch off your phone, breathe deeply, exhale slowly and completely let go. Something that is incredibly valuable and also very hard to find these days.

When planning a trip to the Garden Route, the go-to places are usually one of the ‘big four’ – George, Wilderness, Knysna, Plett but what may just be one of the best-kept secrets of the area, is the town of Sedgefield. I’ve always considered Sedgefield an ‘on-route town’, a drive-through to get to the next place, however my view on this was changed by a stay at Lakeside Lodge & Spa, where slowing down and taking time to relax is a way of life.

Say Hello to Sedgefield

Sedgefield is a registered ‘CittaSlow Town’, a movement that started in Italy a number of years ago. The criteria to qualify as a Slow Town is varied but follows a similar thread – a commitment to living kinder, valuing local traditions, taking time for contemplation, environmental preservation and more.

The town itself has its own pledge within this framework which promotes time for leisure and pleasure, creating a friendly environment, and promoting quality of life –  these values are not only evident in the area, but also in the manner of the people we encountered.

Lakeside Lodge & Spa, Sedgefield

Lakeside Lodge & Spa is tucked away at the end of a long pan-handle that follows the curves of the vast Swartvlei lagoon. The luxury 9-roomed lodge is perched at the base of the lagoon; it overlooks a grassed embankment and out over the lake, which is surrounded by dense forest that gives the Garden Route its magical feel.

A jetty pokes through the reed-lined shore of the lake and the water laps gently at the base of the pontoon tethered there. It’s the kind of place that I imagine could have inspired Mark Twain, and I almost expect to see Huck Finn napping on the jetty, hands behind his head, hat pushed down over his eyes.

Stylish Accommodation at Lakeside Lodge & Spa

All rooms at the lodge face the lagoon and the sliding door frontage gives each an uninterrupted view. The grassed area and patio directly outside each room give a sense of endless space. The grass is dotted with pretty wrought iron tables and loungers and is dominated by a huge, long-established tree that shades the area.

Rooms are elegantly appointed with beautiful finishings. Ours decorated in silver and white with pops of green, plush textiles, crystal chandeliers and an enviable silver gilt mirrored vanity. The bathroom, also exquisite, boasted a deep bath, walk-in shower and dual basin area.

Each element has been hand picked and exudes clean lines, sophistication and luxury at every turn.

The rooms have all the amenities one would expect from a 5-star establishment, along with extra touches such as a capsule coffee/tea machine, numerous thoughtfully placed plug points (so no need for adapters of any kind), and a contemporary docking station for Apple iPhones/iPods.

Wine and Dine at Lakeside Lodge & Spa

The lodge is home to Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant and both the lodge and restaurant are part of the bigger Benguela group which also includes Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, near Hermanus, NomNom Eatery in Somerset West and Pirate Golf, also located at the wine estate.

The restaurant offers an à la carte menu, which can be paired with suggested wines from Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate. Executive Chef Kelly-Anne Pietersen changes the menu according to seasonality and is inspired by the amazing produce from the surrounding area. Kelly-Ann, who has worked with Bertus Basson at Overture, amongst other high profile chefs, brings her unique style and fine-dining flair to the brasserie.

We enjoyed a stunning winter meal, there were a number of standout dishes for us but we decided that the prawn starter was a hit matched by the lemon pot au créme dessert – a tropical and utterly magical take on a créme brûlée.

You simply must try Benguela Cove’s Chardonnay if you can, it is a stunner. In fact, make sure you set aside time during your stay to do a full wine tasting, you can do as is, or enjoy a paired cheese or chocolate flight, both of which are super fun and tasty.

Get active and get Outdoors

Given the location of Lakeside Lodge & Spa, there are plenty of outdoor activities available and you really must try to get in a few if you can. The equipment is all laid out and ready to use and the team are on hand to assist. You can opt for a kayak, a SUP experience or just a ride out on the pontoon with GM, Karl, who will no doubt have you in stitches with his unique brand of comedy.

The lake has plenty of shallow spots, so there is no need to fear the murky depths. The only ‘kayaking’ I have done in the last 15 years has been on a stationary rowing machine inside a gym, so to experience it out on this magnificent lake was truly special.

We highly recommend following up an early morning kayak with a well-earned fry up and cappuccino at the brasserie.

For the more adventurous sports person, try Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), skiing or wakeboarding. If you do try your hand at one of these, take my advice and book a massage at the spa on site. They offer a variety of treatments and a massage to ease your aching muscles is so worth it! I feared not being able to lift a coffee cup the day after our kayaking, but the back neck and shoulder massage I had was a lifesaver.

There is plenty on offer to keep you entertained no matter what your desired level of exertion. And, if not exerting yourself at all is what you’re after, you can enjoy a sunset ride on Lady Giselle the pontoon boat with a chilled bottle of Benguela Cove Chardonnay– bliss!

If you want to just put your feet up… you can

If you want to simply just kick back and chill you really can do just that. The loungers on the front lawn offer the ideal spot to chill. Lunch can be served at your lounger or at a table under the shade of the trees and a handy silent buzzer will alert a staff member to your every need. The stunning pool area is also perfect for lazy summer days, glass of vino in hand and sunglasses in place.

The grass embankment cleverly disguises a large amphitheatre, which plays host to regular concerts and events so if you’re in the area, look out for what’s on the go. Just adjacent to the amphitheatre is a fire pit where a raging bonfire and cosy cushioned seating provides the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets.

There are plenty of inspiring things in life that are worth capturing for your Instagram feed, endless ocean views, Lion’s Head in the early dawn light and richly coloured sunsets over the Atlantic. At the exclusive Ellerman House Boutique Hotel in Bantry Bay, you have all of these in abundance and that is just the beginning…

The Property

From the outside, the property is quite unassuming. As a resident of Sea Point, I drive past its walls on a daily basis and have always noted it’s gleaming gold signage and suited staff who look after guests entering and exiting its busy Kloof Road location.

It doesn’t give much away though and the real beauty of the property is only fully graspable once you enter. Sandwiched between the ocean and the mountains, it has one of the most enviable locations.

The hotel, which was once a private property, is an extensive Edwardian-style building with high ceilinged rooms, wooden floors and staircases and Cape Town’s first ever lift installed in a private home, which still operates!

Accommodation at Ellerman House

Our room at Ellerman House was spacious and beautifully appointed. Crisp white linens are accentuated with pops of texture from patterned cushions, curtains and upholstery in serene green tones. Our room had a wrap around balcony with views over the Atlantic and neighbouring suburbs that really make you appreciate just how beautiful this city is.

If you can imagine using your phone’s panoramic photo setting and taking a continuous shot from Lion’s Head on your right, panning all the way across Sea Point and the azure Atlantic all the way to your left towards Camps Bay, you’ll have some idea of just how spectacular and encompassing it is.

We were lucky enough to even spot the spray of whale activity in the distance as Southern Rights played in the blue depths.

Artistic Impressions

Besides its world-class location, the other defining factor of Ellerman House is its incredible fine art collection. Over 1000 pieces of art are housed within the property and it is one of SA’s foremost private collections (owned by Ellerman House’s owner, Paul Harris, an avid art appreciator).

The collection is looked after by permanent curator, Margaret Gradwell, and guests can have a tour of the collection with art guide, Talita Swarts, who is permanently onsite. This is a great way to appreciate the collection and will reveal lots of interesting information about the various pieces.

From paintings within the main building to sculptures in the garden and a full private contemporary gallery set within the grounds, the collection is astounding. It’s impossible not to slow down as you walk through the hotel and to take a moment to appreciate the diverse and eclectic collection. Like us, you’ll probably find that a few will become favourites.

Sun and Sundowners

Although it was a spectacularly sunny day, we opted not to take a dip in the sparkling pool but to instead lounge on our balcony with books and get a little light on our impossibly wintery legs. The opportunity to just lie back in beautiful surroundings with a great novel is really one of life’s most underappreciated activities.

The Ellerman team were even kind enough to move our onsite wine tasting to a little later in the evening to give us maximum time to kick back and relax in the sun.

Towards the late afternoon though, as the sun began to dip, we headed down to the hotel’s terrace where the allure of gin cocktail sundowners was too good to pass up.

Fabrice, our host with the most, took care of us impeccably, showcasing some of SA’s most notable local gins and mixing perfect GnTs.  We were spoilt with delicious canapés (of which the pork belly was a standout) and were able  to sit back, sigh and take in the most perfect African sunset.

Wine Before you Dine

Ellerman House has an incredible wine cellar on site, complete with carbon fibre corkscrew maturation cabinet that houses an array of local wines.

On one side of the room is the terroir wall, an artistic installation that showcases sections of terroir from some of SA’s most accoladed wine farms, on the other the grantite bar where wine tasting takes place.

Fabrice was again our fabulous host and took us through a highly entertaining tasting of four unique local wines before we headed up to dinner.

Dinner at Ellerman House

Dinner is served in the dining room and the menu changes based on seasonal availability and what the chefs are inspired by. For starters, we opted for the Heirloom Beet & Fennel Salad and a dish of Cape Malay Scented Prawns. The salad had a divine rooibos dressing and dots of smoked eggplant and olive marmalade.

The prawn dish was served with a fragrant Malay inspired curry sauce that was utterly yum. Mini sweet potato dhaltjies are served with the dish and are an inspired way to mop up that deliciously aromatic sauce.

For mains, we opted for the Mauritian Sea Bass and the Free Range Karoo Lamb. What really stood out with these dishes, and in fact with all the food, was the meticulous attention to detail in the way that they were both prepared.

Both the fish and the lamb were impeccably cooked and each dish was brought together by a sauce made in the classic French way. A rich, meaty wild rosemary jus for the lamb and a light and creamy velouté for the fish. The dishes were elegant, refined and it was clear to see that they had been cooked with absolute confidence and skill. It has been a while since I have enjoyed such classically prepared dishes that were cooked so precisely. A credit to the chef and his team.

Morning has Broken

The sun rose on another incredible Cape Town winter’s day at Ellerman House. The sparkle of the ocean and the rolling lull of the waves below roused us out of our comfy cocoons and onto the balcony for early morning coffees.

We then headed to the dining room to enjoy a beautiful breakfast spread of fresh fruits and smoothies, pastries and more. We ordered a delicious shakshuka and caramelised onion rosti breakfast from the menu as well. I had a freshly made Red Juice, a combination of beetroot, cranberry and apple, with a hit of ginger, to fight flu I was battling.

Because you’re meant to have a little fun

Ellerman House is unique for many reasons, besides relaxing in its exceptional surroundings, the team appreciate the fact that travellers also want to indulge and treat themselves. To this end, they have the Sugar Pantry, a delightfully sinful room that’s open 24-hours and is packed with treats from pastries and confections to cookies, sweets and savoury snacks.

You can grab an ice cold craft beer and a bag of crisps, or a cappuccino and a delicate chocolate ganache slice. The chefs ensure that the pantry is always stocked and the only thing you need to worry about is making sure you don’t go crazy Willy Wonka-style and spoil your dinner!

Right opposite the sugar shack is a window into the kitchen; in the unlikely event that you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can press the buzzer and a glass door will slide open and you can ask one of the friendly kitchen team to help you out.

The Boutique Experience

The Ellerman House experience is a unique one. Not only are you privy to one of the most staggeringly beautiful locations in the country but the team are just so incredibly well-versed at what they do. The point is that you feel at home in the space and this comes across in every aspect. Things seem to happen before you even anticipate them and even though the property is exclusive, the team are grounded and friendly.

We genuinely felt the personalised attention mixed with encouragement to just relax and have a little fun. You get the sense that they really do want you to have a good time and they go out of their way to make sure your Ellerman experience is one that you won’t soon forget.

It makes complete sense that Ellerman House has a high rate of returning guests – people travel from all over the world to experience their unique brand of hospitality. The social hashtag that Ellerman House uses is #neverleave and honestly, we really didn’t want to.

The V&A Waterfront is as much a part of the fabric of the city of Cape Town as the mountain is. The harbour originally provided refuge to ships of the Dutch East India Company and during the 90s, development to reclaim the area resulted in the creation of the retail, lifestyle and entertainment centre that it is today.

The Table Bay has an almost paternal positioning here; located at the very end of the pier, the hotel overlooks the whole of the waterfront area, with views of Table Mountain and the docks and is surrounded by the glistening aquamarine waters of the Atlantic seaboard. When they refer to its positioning as ‘the best address in Cape Town’ they’re absolutely right.

A Grand Entrance

The foyer of The Table Bay boasts high beamed ceilings that give a sense of space and opulence. As you enter, your eye is immediately drawn to the large glass window frontage; the view overlooks the working harbour and is an ever-changing landscape as boats sail in and out.

It’s quite mesmerising to sit in the hotel’s sunken lounge area and watch the scenery (this is also where they serve a fabulous high tea). The backdrop of Table Mountain and the vibrant city beyond add to the charm.

The hotel, part of Sun International’s Sunlux portfolio, is dedicated to providing a 5-star experience for its guests and is well-versed in this.

Welcome drinks, a refreshing scented warm towel (always great if you’ve been travelling through airports) along with a seamless check-in, got things started off on the right foot for us.

The Rooms

Our room at The Table Bay benefited from view over the harbour from the lounge area, as well as the Atlantic seaboard from the bedroom and patio areas. Even on an overcast and rainy day, such as the one when we visited, the views are still beautiful, if not even more so. Somehow the wet conditions seem to suit the harbour position and didn’t detract at all.

A glass of the hotels ‘Captain’s Red’ with a selection of snacks in the room was the perfect way to arrive and unwind.

Textured and patterned furnishings give the room a rich feel and the king size bed, with luxurious linen, make for an incredibly good night’s sleep. We also loved the addition of fresh flowers in the room (proteas – a nod to Cape flora) and a selection of sweet treats from the pastry kitchen.

A Spot of Retail Therapy

It’s impossible to visit The Table Bay and not be seduced by the proximity of one of the best shopping destinations in the city. The hotel has a direct access point from the lobby – escalators that will deliver you right into the shopping centre and more specifically to the luxury wing. You can head over to Louis Vuitton, Dunhill, Chopard and many more.

The mall has everything you could possibly need and then some, and if the busy shops get too much for you, it’s a quick walk back to the sanctuary of your room.

Dinner and drinks at The Table Bay

Before we sat down for dinner, we opted for a quick drink in the hotel’s plush Union Bar. On tap, we enjoyed the Table Bay’s very own Wild Legend Weiss beer and a glass of wine from the staggeringly broad wine list.

Camissa Brasserie is the hotel’s restaurant and the menu offers a selection of dishes with South African influence, designed to give tourists a hint of local flavour. Right now Camissa only serves dinner, but a fabulous Winter Lunch Buffet is due to start later on in July.

Chef Kershan Rambarun offers dishes such as Phyllo-wrapped Prawns served with a mango atchar and Smoked Snoek-filled Crispy Wontons.

For mains, we enjoyed a piece of perfectly cooked salmon, served on top of a bed of pea and lemon risotto, as well as a really delicious pappardelle pasta with wild mushrooms. The pappardelle was wafer thin and silky and served with a creamy sauce with just the right balance of gorgonzola cheese.

For dessert, the deconstructed caramel cheesecake was super light and paired with a yummy marzipan ice cream. You also can’t go wrong with the creamy crème brûlée, – a real treat!

A talented live guitarist provided background music which was a really lovely addition to the evening.

Breakfast in the Atlantic

The Table Bay’s sumptuous breakfast spread is served in The Atlantic room. On the Sunday morning of our stay the heavens mercifully opened up and much-needed rain was coming down in torrents. The Atlantic provided a cosy spot to enjoy breakfast and rejoice in the rain.

Beautiful melodies from a live pianist made the morning even more special.

Everything you can imagine is available on the breakfast buffet, from fresh juices and smoothies to baked goods, fruits and yoghurts, a hot buffet, sushi, cold meats and cheeses and a waffle bar making sumptuous looking Belgian-style waffles. If you’re heading out for a day of exploring the Mother City, you’ll be well fed and fueled up to put lots of steps on your Fitbit.

Special Mention

One thing we must mention is the fabulous Africology range of amenities provided in the bathrooms. The range is naturally scented with a combination of essential oils, and best of all, they are organic, fair trade and ethically-formulated, which is in line with the hotel’s sustainability focus.

Although you can’t luxuriate in a bubbly bath full of it (the hotel has placed a lot of emphasis on water conservation during the Cape’s drought crisis) you can have a lovely, quick power shower and then use the body lotion afterwards to enjoy the amazing fragrance and benefits.

5 Star Style at The Table Bay

When visiting the Mother City travellers are spoilt for choice when choosing where to stay but there is definitely something to be said for a hotel that consistently offers guests a world-class experience. The Table Bay is exactly that; seamless service, fantastic positioning and a wealth of knowledge in hoteliering make it a wonderful choice for foreigners and locals alike.

The Belmond Mount Nelson is not just a hotel; fondly known to locals as ‘The Nellie’, this grand matriarch of the city is both an icon and a treasure. If you’re a city-based Capetonian, you probably pass by her pastel pink walls a few times a week and don’t give it much thought but the hotel is a site where many great, notable moments have taken place.

Did you know that John Lennon led a meditation on the front lawn once? Or that Winston Churchill wrote war correspondence from a writing desk within the hotel? There is so much to explore and discover at this archetypal city stalwart, as we recently found out when we visited as guests.

Pretty in Pink

Some might find the hotel’s pretty pink outfit an odd choice but once you know the reason behind it, it all makes sense. Her very own Pantone pink is all about honouring a moment in time.

After the end of the first World War, the manager at the time, an Italian, decided that the ending of the war was cause for celebration (as it was, of course) and decided to mark this by painting the walls a cheery pink, which reminded him of houses in the Italian village that he came from.

He probably didn’t realise at the time that this decision would forever become a part of the fabric of what makes the Belmond Mount Nelson her iconic self.

History in the Making

Inside, the hotel has obvious colonial hints – again an ode to her history. Walls are adorned with fabulous retro posters advertising passage on the Union-Castle Shipping Line, originally mail carriers between the UK and SA. The owner of the shipping line, Sir Donald Currie, bought The Mount Nelson as a place for his first-class passengers to stay when they arrived in SA from England.

Aside from creating one of Cape Town’s most iconic establishments, he is also responsible for bringing rugby and the Currie Cup to SA – what a guy!

Along with the retro posters, hints throughout the hotel speak to its maritime connection; models of ships from the Union-Castle line, paintings and even actual memorabilia from the ships themselves. You’ll also notice rooms named after ships and if you look closely, some of the chairs have a telltale hole in the bottom frame where they would have been attached to the deck of the ships.

The property has a long history before its time as a hotel and evidence of one of its original owners, the Hamilton-Ross family, can be seen in the statues of a lions and lion detailing seen in other parts of the hotel.

Rooms at the Belmond Mount Nelson

The hotel has 198 rooms and suites; some are located in the main building and there are also several rooms and other accommodation in cottages and separate establishments on the property, ideal if you’re looking for a little more privacy.

The room we stayed in at The Belmond Mount Nelson was first class. Decorated in shades of delicate duck egg blue with layers of luxury created by textured upholstery, soft carpeting underfoot and plush finishes.

If you can imagine sinking back into the most comfortably cosy couch, with a glass of chilled bubbles in one hand and a square of delectable Millionaire’s Shortbread in the other, you’ll be halfway to imagining just how lovely it really is.

Expansive views over the property and out over the city of Cape Town added to its charm. We also loved the inclusion of lots of local books on South African food, art, history and more.

Wining and Dining

The main dining area of the hotel has been moved and is now the Lord Nelson Restaurant, where they have revived a menu of bold classic dishes and the mid-17th-century French art of ‘guéridon’ or tableside service.

The menu offers a selection of dishes that celebrate a bygone era in a modern way. Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg and his team’s food is classic yet bold and full of flavour.

If you don’t mind waiting a bit, you can opt for something really classic and have the Beef Wellington – this dish is made for two, carved table-side and is served with jus and bearnaise sauce. A real English classic!

Before you sit down for dinner, we recommend a drink in The Planet Bar, a celestially-inspired space that offers a wide selection of wines, spirits and local craft beer.

Afternoon Tea – A Belmond Mount Nelson Classic

No one speaks of teatime in Cape Town without mentioning The Belmond Mount Nelson, the two are synonymous. Four times a day the team puts on a luscious tea spread worthy of the most regal, pinky pointing guests.

From savouries on a tiered stand to multi-levelled tables of delicate pastries and sweet delights, it’s a veritable feast.

There is also a tea pairing, tea ceremony and masterclasses available for those who really adore their cuppa. Sip out of delicately rimmed bone china, enjoy the tunes of delightful live pianist and take in the chandeliered surroundings dotted with greenery and eclectic, luxurious furnishings.

No matter what else is offered for high tea around Cape Town, you simply can’t replicate what the Mount Nelson offers – steeped in authentic history and literally of years of experience.

Wake Up It’s a Beautiful Morning

Breakfast is usually served in the Oasis Restaurant, however when we visited, it was offered inside The Planet Restaurant – the half-moon shaped conservatory anteroom is lined with tables that offer a fabulously varied buffet, along with a complete hot menu as well.

You simply must try some of the amazing fresh bread baked in-house daily by artisanal bread maker Togara Mabharani (which you can even attempt yourself with these recipes).

Take a Stroll

Post breakfast you’ll need a walk (trust us) and the recently curated history walk is a real treat. The hotel has been mapped out detailing famous spots and giving a little insight into the stories it has to tell.

We were completely enamoured as we wandered the meticulously kept gardens, noting incredible trees and pieces of the hotel’s history dotted around the property.

We learnt that the majestic entrance way from Orange Street is called the Prince of Wales Gate (named for the prince when he visited) and heard a story of how the palm-lined entrance was almost chopped down when President Clinton planned a state visit. Thankfully his overprotective SWAT team didn’t get their way!

Full Service for its Guests

The hotel may be steeped in history but it is also a modern-day facility geared for guests from around the globe. There is WiFi, business services and a well-equipped gym onsite. If you need some downtime, then definitely book into the calming cocoon that is the Librisa Spa.

Given its incredible history, the hotel is also extremely well-versed when it comes to hosting events. It has several spaces that can host events of all kinds and sizes, from intimate business brainstorming sessions, right through to grand celebrations in its banqueting hall. They hosted Queen Elizabeth’s 21st Birthday pre-party drinks, so they know a thing or two!

Experience Counts

The Belmond Mount Nelson celebrated being 119 years old in 2018 (100 years of being pink in November) and this experience shows in its absolute seamless functioning. Considering the size of the hotel, the sheer undertaking of looking after this many people is quite something to behold, and yet as guests, the service feels completely personal.

From the liveried doorman in top hat and tails to the knowledgeable tea sommelier and everyone in-between, there is a feeling of quiet confidence that comes from knowing exactly what they are doing.

The hotel is quietly elegant and yet not austere; there is a warmth to her walls that envelops you and takes you back in time.

In a modern and hurried world, the balance of slick service while maintaining an olde worlde feel is not easy but the Belmond Mount Nelson team have it down pat.

Aside from exploring the Cape from an extremely comfortable place, staying at the Belmond Mount Nelson puts you in the same audience as some of the world’s most famous names. Glittering stars of the stage and screen like Marlene Dietrich, Bono and the Black-eyed Peas, famous authors Rudyard Kipling, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, right through to those who have changed the world, like Madiba himself.

It’s a fabulously varied and impressive group to be a part of and no doubt as time marches on, the Belmond Mount Nelson will be there to play host to many more.

For those that are mostly desk-bound, travelling for business can seem like an exciting prospect, but for those who actually do it, it can be quite mundane, disruptive to routine and oftentimes exhausting. The Westin Cape Town recognises this and has made it its mission to make business travel as seamless for its guests as possible.

Hello to the Cape Town CBD

With its positioning on the tip of the Foreshore, the imposing building of The Westin Cape Town is a landmark as you enter the CBD. The hotel is recognisable from across the city and is aligned with the Cape Town International Convention Centre directly opposite.

With the V&A Waterfront just a short distance away, the lively vibe of Bree, Loop and Long Streets perpendicular and views of the Mother City’s most famous landmark, Table Mountain, the hotel really boasts one of the best and most centrally located positionings.

Beyond Just Business

With its proximity to the CTICC and the central business district, it makes sense for the hotel to be a go-to for business travellers, and as such, is geared this way. Of course, The Westin Cape Town welcomes leisure travellers as well and is also geared for families with children. Business travel is a special area of expertise though.

The 482-roomed hotel is comfortably appointed with special attention given to amenities for people that are likely to be working during their stay.

For a more private experience, opt to book into a room on the 17th floor, the Executive Suites, with the added benefit of secure, card-only accessible entrance.

The room we stayed in was equipped with a business desk, which may sound like an obvious inclusion but many leisure hotels do not have this and you might find yourself working on your lap in bed, or at a dressing table. Having a proper-height desk with phone, lamp and nearby plugs and USB points makes working comfortably much more productive.

Another notable addition was the inclusion of an ironing board and iron in the room. While this may seem trivial, those who travel know that clothes never come out a suitcase the way they went in. Being able to iron something yourself ahead of a meeting or busy day is often just far more convenient than having it collected and ironed for you. It’s a small plus but all of these thoughtful additions make business travel more pleasant.

Health is Wealth

One of the most disruptive things about travelling, aside from living out of a suitcase, is a break in the routine of healthy eating and exercise. Business lunches or dinners and entertaining clients can be detrimental to the waistline.

The Westin Cape Town has really put a great deal of effort into offering options that work to minimise this disruption. We loved their Sleep Well menu, which has been designed with the SuperfoodsRX™ concept and includes dishes that contain well-known superfoods that either boost energy, promote peaceful sleep or are designed to complement your health programme. A range of fresh juices, smoothies and light meals have been designed around this idea.

After an extremely long week, we were thrilled to be able to order dishes from this menu to be enjoyed in-room. A fresh turkey wrap and a grilled chicken burger were light enough to eat before sleeping and were both tasty and filling.

All work and no play makes for a sad stay but this could never be the case at The Westin Cape Town though. A full regular menu also available – we recommend the simply stunning crème brûlée, which at the end of a long week is the stuff sanity is made of.

If you do want to get out of your room to dine or need to entertain clients, On19 Restaurant, located on the top floor, has an unparalleled cityscape view, which at night is breathtaking (check out their One Ingredient dinner series). Chef, Steven Mandes has created a menu of contemporary food with creative ingredients, textures and flavours.

Bountiful Breakfast

On19 is also the location for breakfast and the spread is a sight to behold. In line with the hotel’s mission to keep you on track, there are loads of health-driven options such as a raw bar with loads of fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, probiotics-enriched yoghurts and superfood smoothies.

There are also plenty of cooked options, some indulgent treats like Flapjacks or French toast with glazed gammon and maple syrup. We loved that the cooked menu had lots of more thoughtful choices such as Congee, Honey-spiced Quinoa and Steel-cut Oats with banana and pecan nuts.

Stay Fit and Relaxed

In keeping with the idea of maintaining your regular schedule, be sure to visit the fitness centre, also located on the 19th floor of The Westin Cape Town. The facility is really well equipped – you’ll get a great workout and can stay on track with your fitness plan.

As you take in the bird’s eye view of the city you’ll forget how hard you’re working and how many calories you’re burning.

If you’re travelling light and don’t have space for workout gear, The Westin Cape Town has a gear lend program, so you can borrow what you need. From trainers to shirts and shorts, they have you covered. If you happen to forget something behind this is an especially useful offering and a good reason not to renege on your good intentions!

Take some Me-time

If your schedule allows, book in for a treatment at the spa – truly thepièce de résistance in keeping yourself de-stressed while you’re away from home. The spa facilities are stunning and the infinity pool, jacuzzi and sauna with the best views in Cape Town. You’ll be forgiven for putting off that budget report for just a bit!

It may seem indulgent to down tools for some me-time but really if more people did it, think how much more pleasant we’d all be in our business dealings. If you have to be away, you may as well try and include a little destresser if you can.

With most luxury hotels, a great location is a prerequisite but every now and again you come across one that is truly exceptional. The 12 Apostles is one of those places.

The 12 Apostles Venue

Located in a standalone spot along the coastline of the Atlantic between Camps Bay and Llandudno. It is the only establishment to be found along this strip of the coastal road and looks set to stay that way, with the surroundings being part of the Table Mountain National Park reserve.

The hotel is literally built into the rockface of the mountain, and because of this position, it has 180-degree views of the Atlantic, that become 360-degree views when you include the mountains behind. It really is breathtaking.

Luxurious Rooms

There are both sea facing and mountain facing rooms and all are elegantly appointed. The room we stayed in was decorated in a soft sea greens and whites, giving it an immediately calming feel.

Contemporary sea elements, multiple layers of textures and well-placed mirrors giving a sense of space and serene luxury.

This room, in particular, is cleverly designed in that the bedroom is slightly elevated, with the lounge and relaxation areas being a level down, affording a view of the azure Atlantic from every angle.

Outside on the patio are private sun loungers, which are great if you don’t feel like sunning yourself at the pool area. We grabbed books and a glass of wine and enjoyed the view and the unseasonally sunny autumn weather.

Every single element that can contribute to your comfort has been thought of. Plush linens, a pillow menu – yes, you can choose your pillow preference (foam, feather etc), plus an incredibly spacious bathroom with every amenity you could need.

The bathroom had the clever addition of a specific soft blue nighttime light, which means you can find your way around without being blinded by full light in the middle of the night. Genius.

Afternoon Tea – Don’t mind if we do…

If you are so inclined, you can book in for afternoon tea, which is offered in the Leopard Bar. At first, the bar may feel like an unusual spot for tea, however, when you’re seated, you’ll understand why it’s such a great choice.

There is a 1930s colonial island vibe about the space and it fits the theme of an indulgent afternoon tea… to a tee. Woven leaf-shaped fans swing lazily back and forth in unison; dark wood furnishings, chintz upholstery and rich leathers are set against fabulous leaf print wallpaper. Combine this with endless ocean views and you have a unique setting for a relaxing afternoon.

An opulent offering of Tea by the Sea is presented on a tiered cake stand; delicious chocolate brownies, chocolate mousse, finger sandwiches, scones with fresh cream and the most decadent cheese scones, to name just a few of the tasty items. You can enjoy Nigiro loose leaf teas, as well as coffees… perhaps even a glass (or bottle) of your favourite MCC.

The hotel also offers a divine Vegan High Tea (prior booking is required) with a selection of plant-based treats and sweets such as a Valrhona Manjari Choc & Hazelnut Slice, Coconut Panna Cotta, vegan scones with jam and a Banana & Walnut Loaf.

Also look out for fun offerings such as the Gin and Bare It gin and canapé tasting and the Pursuit of Hoppiness craft beer and canapé tasting. There is definitely plenty to keep you busy!

Stylish Wining and Dining

Aside from the Leopard Bar, there is Azure Restaurant, the hotel’s main dining are, as well as The Café Grill pool bar. We dined at Azure the night we stayed and absolutely loved our meal.

There were a couple of standouts but the Popcorn ‘Mielie Pap’ starter was absolutely exceptional. The menu description had me at butter poached prawns, but then exceeded expectations by serving them on top of a bed of buttery mielie meal, coconut and corn custard and a prawn bisque that I could have drunk right out of the jug. One of the tastiest things I have eaten in a while.

The sustainable line fish with cauliflower purée, miso creme fraîche and roast fish veloute was another incredibly tasty dish.

The restaurants at the 12 Apostles have an astonishing selection of wines that will have you perusing for ages. They include an amazing choice from Bouchard Finlayson, another property in the Red Carnation group, which the hotel belongs to. Sommelier, Gregory Mutambe, is incredibly knowledgeable and is on hand to help you choose – this is especially helpful for out of town travellers, as there are so many great local wines to choose from and whittling them down can be tough.

The Spa at the 12 Apostles

The spa at the 12 Apostles is another must-do if time allows. Making use of the hotel’s unique mountain positioning, the indoor pools (using treated non-potable water currently) are almost carved out of the mountainside and will leave you feeling like you are lazing about in an underground cavern.

Thoughtful touches, like being able to choose your preferred style of music for your treatment and stunning outdoor gazebos overlooking the ocean for treatments (weather permitting), make it really unique.

We booked in for a couple’s massage and enjoyed a superlative treatment from both of our therapists, leaving us utterly relaxed and rejuvenated.

Breakfast with a View

If you’re feeling energetic, you can pop on your trainers and take a pre-brekkie walk from your room up the mountain. As the hotel backs directly onto it, you can head straight out and enjoy the amazing biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

You’ll be able to take in the beauty of the sea and mountains while getting lungfuls of fresh air – that should work up your appetite.

There will be no judgement, of course, if you decide to rather sleep in and roll out at a leisurely time for coffee and croissants.

A delectable breakfast buffet, as well as a full cooked menu, is available at Azure Restaurant. The view is again, absolutely mesmerising, and you can take it all in while you enjoy a mimosa and eggs Benedict.

Unmatched Service

Amazing location and great food and wine aside, the one area that can really set properties apart is service and at the 12 Apostles, you will experience the very finest. No job is too much trouble for the team, from parking your car when you arrive to ensuring that you get the best night’s rest possible with the right pillow choice. Everyone we encountered was helpful, friendly and went out of their way to make us feel really welcomed and relaxed.

This is not a hotel to rest on the laurels of its unique location, they offer all sorts of activities geared for every traveller. From a private cinema, where you can catch a movie in uber comfort, to picnics amongst the flora of the area – all you need to do is decide what you’re in the mood for. If your mood is to do as little as possible, then kick back, grab a cocktail and do just that.

When it comes to places to stay in Franschhoek, visitors are spoilt for choice. There is an abundance of beautiful places that showcase the valley at its best and often it is the small, thoughtful differences and the personal attention that separate one from the next. This is exactly what you will experience at Fransvliet.

Fransvliet Guesthouse

The boutique guesthouse is situated on a working grape and olive farm. Although most of the grapes are sold on to surrounding winemakers, the olives are processed onsite, so you can take home Fransvliet olive oil or bottled olives as a memento of your stay.

The guesthouse is owned and run by Shirley Kilian, a native Joburger who found herself in Franschhoek in retirement. Not content to be doing nothing, she, along with her business partner, revamped sections of an original house to create the accommodation and reception areas of Fransvliet.

Surrounded by vineyards and with views of the surrounding mountains, it is, in a word, idyllic.

The guesthouse consists of 5 suites, as well as a separate honeymoon suite and a self-catering unit as well. The self-catering unit is perfect for out of town guests looking to stay for a longer period of time and will make a great base to explore the valley from. All rooms are surrounded by lush greenery, a mix of natural fynbos and flowering plants, creating a cosy and natural space.

The rooms are beautifully appointed with plush furnishings and all the amenities you need to make your stay comfortable. The king-sized bed and uber-luxe linen made for an incredibly restful night. Even though we haven’t fully hit winter yet, there is a definite autumn chill in the air, so heated floors in the bathroom made all the difference. There is aircon for those sweltering summer days and a fireplace in each room for when the weather is cooler.

Wine and Dine in Franschhoek

The guesthouse is located on the way into town itself, a mere 4kms from the centre, so is close enough to get an uber into town (yes there’s uber in Franschhoek!) and also far enough away from the bustle that you can escape. Of course, Franschhoek is awash with amazing restaurants and wine estates, so you can while away your time in a variety of ways (we visited La Petite Colombe for their winter lunch menu).

When morning breaks at Fransvliet the sun comes up from behind the mountains directly in front of the rooms, so you can open your French doors and have a coffee on your private patio while catching the early morning rays. Alternatively, pop on your trainers, as we did, and take a walk through the vineyards. You may want to consider this option, as the breakfast spread is such that you’ll want to have some extra calories to spare.

Special Touches

A selection of fresh fruits is offered with granola and yoghurt to start. The yoghurt with real vanilla seeds and has a beautiful flavour – it’s one of those small but thoughtful touches. Another is the freshly squeezed juice made onsite –it changes daily depending on what fruit is available. We enjoyed a refreshing blend of nectarine, lemon, apple with a hint of ginger.

Along with this is a cooked breakfast option. There is a daily special offered and on the day we dined it was delicately smoked Franschhoek salmon trout with creamy scrambled eggs and avo. A delicious way to start any day. We were also served a lovely plate of mixed pastries and breads that we tucked into. Accompanying this was a selection of local artisanal cheeses and homemade jams made by Shirley and the team. The patio outside of the dining area receives floods of morning sunshine and is the perfect place to enjoy a cappuccino and fresh croissant while you plan your day in the valley.

Whether you travel a little or a lot, you’ll find that most hotels have a standard way of doing things, so when you come across ones that do things a little differently, they stand out. The Radisson RED Cape Town is all about doing things differently and the concept brings travel to a fun and relaxed space that we love.

THE CONCEPT OF THE RADISSON RED CAPE TOWN

The idea of the Radisson RED brand is to appeal to a hip and connected market of young travellers. Surprisingly, the fellow guests around us during our stay were a real mix – showing that this way of travelling appeals to a far broader market than perhaps thought.

You won’t find a traditional reception counter with staff in shoulder-padded jackets and cravats here, this is far more laid back. The reception area is a table with laptops and jean-clad, sneaker-wearing team members will welcome you in.

The hotel has been designed with its contemporary market in mind. Cool cement flooring, bright pops of red and yellow and industrial finishings that give it edge. The result is functional and off-beat and the space feels welcoming and energetic.

TRAVEL WITH YOUR POOCH

Another unique aspect of the hotel brand is that it is pet-friendly (with restrictions… to be fair it’s not a pet hotel). As a young couple with no kids but a fur baby, this really appealed to us. The hotel’s mascot is Baxter the Boston Terrier, so you may seem him around during your stay. The hotel is kitted out to accommodate dogs up to the size of around 8 kg and when you check in with your pooch, he/she will be sent up a doggy bed, as well as a bowl of kibble and biscuit treats. (Read Baxter’s Pet Policy)

Our fur-kid, Gandalf (also a Boston Terrier and apparently a dead ringer for Baxter), accompanied us on our stay and besides his rampant snoring, was as good as gold. He loved the balcony of our room, which overlooked the comings and goings of the Silo district and was happy to chill there and take it all in.

The first floor is a dedicated pet-friendly floor and so there is nothing to be concerned about if you aren’t travelling with a pet or have any reservations about this.

THE ROOMS: DESIGN MEETS COMFORT

The rooms are simply decorated with notable pieces by Vogel that bring a bright, local feel. The decor is simple and functional and in keeping with the funky red theme. We loved the coffee box, complete with takeaway cups, in case you want to grab a java on the go before you head out to explore.

Suites also boast HD TVs, a soundbar and BYOD fridge, so you can pop whatever you want in there. We love the fact that they’ve also included ‘love yourself lighting’ so your selfies will look good, no matter what the angle (and, bonus, you’ll be able to Instagram them in no time once connected to the super fast WiFi).

THE LOCATION OF THE RADISSON RED CAPE TOWN

The hotel is located right in the heart of the Silo district and is flanked by restaurants, retail spaces and a premier Virgin Active gym (although the hotel has its own gym onsite too).

For visitors to Cape Town you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot to explore the city from, considering that the V&A Waterfront, the CBD and beaches are just a few steps away.

During your stay at the hotel, we really recommend making a point of getting out of bed early at least one morning and exploring the Waterfront before it comes to life. This is when you get to see it at it’s best, as a working harbour before the chaos of retail takes hold. There is a marked running track around the harbour and this is a great way to start the day and to exercise your pooch if travelling with one.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

The hotel has OUIBar + KTCHN that serves breakfast and lunch, and again, the hotel’s relaxed and laid back vibe is evident here. A number of the food items are already pre-made and packaged in to-go boxes/tubs, which will appeal to those who are on the move and want to get out and about.

Coffees are offered self-service from the coffee station, again with takeaway cups for if you’re heading out. We loved this sense of control this gave us.

THE ROOFTOP OF THE RADISSON RED CAPE TOWN

You simply can’t visit the Radisson RED Cape Town without checking out the rooftop area. The pool is located here and the views are, in a word, spectacular.

There is also a drinks van, yes there’s a van on the roof, that serves cocktails, wine, smoothies and craft beer.

Be sure you check out Baxter’s Bitchn Blonde Ale – this is the hotel’s own craft brew and gets a double thumbs up from us.

There is also food available on the rooftop, so you can pull up a seat, get an ice cold brew and nosh down on some yummy grub while you take in the view.

Everything about the Radisson RED Cape Town speaks to its cool concept. From the G ‘n T you’ll be offered on arrival, to the artistic prints on the walls and the choice of music. While there’s never a feeling of being hurried, the space is geared to minimise time spent on admin and maximise your time enjoying yourself. Cruising has been a holiday of choice for families and sunseekers for years, and in South Africa, it is a budget-friendly way of having a holiday out of the country, when travelling overseas is prohibitive for many. So, while you may not be over the seas, you are on the seas and it can feel completely otherworldly.

Pomene Bay is an unspoilt area found roughly 600 km north of Maputo and 170 km south of Vilanculos. The location of the bay affords visitors a strip of immaculate beach with the warm Indian Ocean on one side and a pristine natural estuary on the other.

MSC opted to take over what was previously Pomene Lodge and have created an island pitstop for cruising guests and they have done an incredible job.

Cruise Culture

If you haven’t cruised before, it can be a little overwhelming at first but you have to put it into perspective. The MSC Sinfonia can accommodate up to around 2600 guests, and being that you are contained within a ship, you will be seeing your fellow travellers a lot. It would be much the same if you booked into one of the city’s largest hotels for a few days and you were all entertained and dined in the hotel for the duration of the stay. It’s a lot of people and the scale of the task to feed and entertain this group of people is monolithic, but the MSC team have it down pat.

What to Expect on your MSC cruise to Pomene

As with many package holiday deals, on a cruise, your meals are all included but you will pay for your drinks (there is a voucher system which is a more cost-effective way to plan if you have a budget). Also, one of the biggest appeals, especially if you are travelling with kids, is the entertainment factor. MSC has a dedicated entertainment team that work around the clock to keep kids and adults busy and having fun.

From babies to pre-teens and teenagers, there is a schedule of events every day, as well as trained minders to watch over young ones (minders in the créche are trained nurses).

The Doremi Splash Park is safe and will keep kids entertained for hours.

Adults are not forgotten though, and every day, an internal newsletter will be delivered to your cabin detailing shows, games and entertainment happening for the day.

 A Quieter MSC Cruise Experience

We’re all different, of course, and we like to holiday in different ways. For some, being entertained 24-7, being able to meet new people and taking part in group activities is the ideal way to let loose. For others though, you may prefer a less inclusive version, where you work on your tan in relative quiet and have a bit of a luxury tropical island experience. This is possible if you know what to do.

Deck 13 on the MSC Sinfonia

If like us, you’re after that more peaceful and relaxing cruise, there are ways to do that. The MSC Sinfonia has Deck 13, a private solarium area complete with loungers, extra towels and what we dubbed, ‘pods’ – spherical bed with comfy mattresses that offer a shaded spot to lie back and read or tan. There is an extra cost to this, so you need to budget that in (it’s totally worth it).

Booking into a balcony cabin is another way to maximise your quiet time, if the busy pool area becomes too much, you can retire to your room and put your feet up and relax, still with a stunning ocean view.

Dial it back at the Aurea Spa

The Aurea Spa onboard is another area that you can book into for a little quiet time. They offer a range of relaxing treatments but if you’re not up for that, the thermal spa is a wonderful option. There are several steam and sauna rooms, rain showers and amazing heated seats with one of the best views over the open ocean on the ship.

What to do on the Island of Pomene Mozambique

If you’ve booked on the MSC cruise to Pomene, then your intent must be to disembark and spend the day on the island. MSC have developed the area into a beautiful island playground and there are plenty of things on offer.

Beautiful palm tree-lined and thatched decked areas with loungers provide ample shade.

There is a large pool area, the deck of which overlooks the estuary side of the island. The fine white sand and thatched umbrellas on the beach side will make you feel as though you have been transported to some far-flung tropical destination.

For us Capetonians, the notion of frolicking in warm water was almost too much to bear, so we headed straight across the scorching white sand and into the blue waters of the Indian Ocean and then spent the rest of the day between the bar, the BBQ lunch buffet and the soaking up sunny rays.

Excursions at Pomene Mozambique

To make the most of your MSC cruise to Pomene experience, you must book in for one of the day excursions offered. These range from snorkeling to a guided mangrove tour, an ocean safari, or a step back in time to visit some of the island’s ruins. If you’re after that aforementioned more secluded and luxurious escape, then book a private cabana for up to six, complete with snacks and drinks.

However you chose to spend your day in Pomene, you will no doubt find it impossible not to be caught up by the island vibe.

Palm trees sway in the gentle breeze, the smell of coconutty tanning oil pervades the air and the sunny, tropical warmth envelopes you like a hug from a good friend.

Tips to help you to make the best of your MSC Cruise to Pomene

>> Order a shuttle, uber or taxi to take you to the terminal, parking is limited and remember that 2000 odd other people are going to be making their way there too. Being dropped at the door is much more efficient.

>> If you have the budget, pay for priority onboarding, it does make the process at the terminal swifter. If you are travelling with kids or anyone elderly, it makes it a whole lot easier.

>> It may seem obvious but pack good sunscreen and reapply often. Even when the temperature is mild, the deck of the boat is like a giant solar panel and you will undoubtedly spend more time in the sun during the hottest times of the day than you normally would. There is no way to fix skin burnt on day one and you want to be able to enjoy the rest of your holiday. Look after your skin, you have to live in it for the rest of your life.

>> Take motion sickness tablets with you just in case you feel like you may be a little wobbly. But just be aware that generally, they make you drowsy.

>> Drink a lot of water, it will keep sun (and alcohol) induced dehydration at bay. This is especially important if you feel like you haven’t quite got your sea legs yet, dehydration can make it worse. Drinking cocktails in the sun all day sounds amazing but a hangover-dehydration combo is not fun.

>> Consider buying the drinks voucher packages sold prior to travel and onboard. The vouchers are usually discounted and if you are travelling with kids you can give them each a booklet to use themselves.

>> Make use of the fact that you can order coffee and pastries to your cabin in the morning. It’s a great way to start the day and is offered as a free service.

>> When you first get on board it will be disorientating to find your cabin as a lot of the hallways look the same. Map the quickest route from your cabin to the pool deck and restaurants, so that you don’t spend all your time finding your way around.

>> If you’re into fitness, jogging the deck is a great way to get a workout in with fresh sea air in your lungs. A jogging trail with distance has been marked on the deck. There is of course also the gym area which also has a fab view (and aircon!).

>> Be smart about how much you eat. It’s a known fact that mass consumption takes place aboard ships. That could be because food is on offer pretty much 24-hrs a day, or because you’ve been dieting incessantly to get into that bikini, or because it’s just there in huge quantities. Whatever the reason, a lot of eating takes place. My suggestions would be to definitely pick Italian options (the ships are operated by Italians and there is a definite influence in the food). The curry is a good option, as the chefs have been trained by real-deal Indian chefs from Durbs in the art of curry making. The breads made onboard, cold meats from Italy, cheese and ice cream (also brought in from Italy) are all also wins.

>> Don’t eat more just because it’s there, you still have to fit into that cozzie and there is also nothing worse than a gut full of rich food if you haven’t quite got your sea legs.

>> Make sure you disembark for the day trip to Pomene, it is beautiful and the chance to swim in the ocean and explore the island should not be missed.

>> Book a shore excursion. You only live once!

>> Lastly, never mention the T-word (*whispers* Titanic) onboard. It’s considered bad luck and not good cruise etiquette.

Situated along a quiet road in Sea Point is the lovely Blackheath Lodge. It’s not the kind of place that you just happen upon but once you know it’s there, it’s hard to forget.

The lodge looks quietly unassuming from the outside, like a Victorian-style Sea Point home, but once you step inside you’re worlds away from the bustling Atlantic Seaboard.

The Look

Inside, Blackheath Lodge’s reception area is filled with light from a huge crystal chandelier and is full of vibrant colour from pieces of beadwork and ceramics from local African artists. The eclectic styling carries on throughout, with small touches that add a bit of quirk to the property. Fun hanging teapot lights, richly textured fabrics and just the right amount of mismatch to look endearing and thoughtful.

Checking In

Upon arrival, we were ushered out of the reception area and took a seat in a comfortable little alcove overlooking the pool area and were offered refreshments. If you’ve travelled far, it’s a great way to be checked in and beats standing around a lobby waiting to be attended to. We decided to start our stay with a lovely chilled glass of local white wine. Our check-in was swift and welcoming, with manageress, Karin, giving us all the ins and outs.

The Room

If you’ve ever read the Folk of the Faraway Tree, you’ll know that the characters climb to the top of the tree to discover a fun land and our room was a bit like that. Located at the top of a spiralling staircase was our stunning vaulted loft suite, with the most beautiful view over Sea Point and the ocean. The astroturf covered balcony was flooded with afternoon sunlight and the green velvet couch was beckoning for me to join it with a book.

It’s all in the details

The owners of Blackheath Lodge (and its sister property in Hermanus, One Marine Drive) want guests to truly relax in their surroundings. They make every effort to make sure that you can do just that by doing all the thinking for you. There are blankets for outdoors when the weather cools, an iPad in your room to use and a library of books and games to keep you entertained. You can also select a DVD from the library and indulge in some late night movie watching.

Each room has a mini bar stocked with complimentary drinks, coffee and tea. Downstairs there is a cake bar and a candy counter, where you can help yourself to a sweet treat whenever you feel like it (gasp!). If you looked up ‘kids in a candy store’ in the dictionary, you’d see a picture of my hubby and I there, so weak is our self-control. I’ll admit, we hit up the candy counter a few times.

If you need a change of scenery from your room (it’s unlikely but just in case) there is a reading lounge where you can make yourself a cup of tea and put your feet up.

If the weather is playing ball, the hotel encloses a lovely pool area courtyard, complete with sun loungers and towels. Here you can sip on a mimosa, catch some rays and marvel at the secludedness from behind your shades.

A little bit of magic

Everywhere you wander around the property you’ll be greeted by a friendly member of staff, or perhaps even Coco the dog or one of the two cats (usually found lounging in a sunny corner). You’ll notice fun thoughtful elements everywhere – from a wall decorated with the letter B, a white elephant standing guard over the pool area, or coloured birdhouses across a wall. It’s the same sense of whimsy evident at One Marine Drive and it’s Alice in Wonderland-ish, even a little Zingara-esque. A bit of magic, a little of the unexpected and just plain fun.

Dining

The team at Blackheath can recommend any one of the numerous great restaurants that are nearby and will make a reservation for you as well. Being locals and really not wanting to venture from our cosy bed, we ordered a bottle of great red wine from the bar and had pizza delivered in. We enjoyed this while lazing around in our robes and trying to best one another at a heated game of Scrabble. What bliss.

The breakfast spread the next morning consisted of delicious, out-the-oven croissants, a selection of cheeses and cold meats, fresh fruit, pancakes, frittatas and more. And that’s before you order your cooked option! We enjoyed great coffee and food on the sun-filled patio and mused about wanting to never leave.

What makes Blackheath Lodge Special?

It seems that the owners of Blackheath Lodge and One Marine Drive are well-travelled themselves and have brought elements from all the places that they have visited and loved together in both properties. I imagine them to be great readers too, as both places specifically have comfy, sunny spots that just beckon for you to curl up with a novel. Something I can really get on board with.

If you are visiting from out of town you are going to find it hard to leave to go sightseeing, as the whole place just feels like a comfy cocoon.
