The Private Sanctuary of La Clé in the Heart of Franschhoek

Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of birds in a lush garden, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee and pastries awaiting you. A leisurely morning unfolds, not at a crowded hotel or resort, but in the privacy of your own luxurious villa, attended to by a discreet and attentive team. This is the essence of a stay at La Clé Villas – a bespoke experience where privacy, relaxation and luxury are elegantly combined.

A Private Haven for the Discerning Traveller

La Clé Villas offers something truly unique in the world of luxury travel, it is a place where every detail is carefully curated – guests are offered the highest level of personalised service in an atmosphere that still feels homey and comfortable.

The property is made up of a separate guest lodge and four exclusive-use villas, each with its own distinct personality. This isn’t your typical hotel stay, but rather an invitation to a private sanctuary where you can fully unwind in the lap of luxury.

This isn’t your typical hotel stay, but rather an invitation to a private sanctuary where you can fully unwind in the lap of luxury.

A Curated Stay in Galerie

We stayed in Galerie, an eclectic space that beautifully melds bold colours and textures. The two en-suite bedrooms were generously sized, offering all the modern comforts – a king-size bed, plush linens, a power shower plus bath, and super soft robes.

The decor throughout the villa is an artful blend of vibrant colour and playful patterns. A plush purple velvet couch sat opposite two leopard-print wingback chairs, with the room illuminated by a striking blue glass chandelier. Textured curtains in bold jewel colours of burnt orange, deep purple and rich blue bring softness and personality to the space. The eclectic style, featuring many unique pieces of art, gives the villa a distinctive allure, making it feel like a private gallery, curated just for you.

Seamless Service, Tailored to Your Needs

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of our stay at La Clé was the team that looked after us. The service was exceptionally professional yet unobtrusive. Whether it was keeping the fireplace crackling, or setting up pool loungers, the team was always on hand when we needed them and were completely invisible when we didn’t.

Unforgettable Culinary Experiences

Food is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a stay at La Clé, and in an epicurean town like Franschhoek, that is no mean feat. Whether it’s a family-style dinner or a lavish breakfast spread, every meal is crafted with care. The experience of having meals set up in the villa added to the sense of intimacy and exclusivity.

On one afternoon John, who was taking care of us, put together a braai, and although this is something we as locals know well, I can see how this quintessential South African experience would be an absolute highlight for foreign guests.

The sumptuous spread featured smoked ribs, boerewors, chicken skewers, lamb chops, and a salad made with couscous, pickled onions, avocado, and an amasi dressing. It was hearty comfort food, but elevated, which is the ethos of the food experience at La Clé.

The brand also offers a range of exclusive, own-label wines for guests to enjoy, with a beautiful Pinot Noir Rosé as the latest addition. A chilled glass pairs perfectly with a spread fresh off the braai.

At another meal, the chef onsite prepared a stunning pork belly, which was the star of dinner – melt-in-the-mouth tender, with perfectly crispy skin, served alongside creamy, Parmesan-laden risotto, smashed baby potatoes on a bed of garlicky yoghurt, and deeply caramelised baby carrots on a swirl of whipped goat’s cheese. Everything was moreish.

Food is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a stay at La Clé and in an epicurean town like Franschhoek, that is no mean feat…

For dessert, a mini deep-dish milk tart was the perfect sweet ending – this nostalgic nod to traditional South African flavours was reminiscent of one that my mom makes, and I just loved it.

La-Cle-Village-Braai-meat-

Breakfast was no less indulgent. A continental feast of freshly cut fruit, warm pastries, locally sourced charcuterie, and cheeses was brought directly to our villa. The local cured trout, served with cream cheese and capers, was a particular favourite – a lavish and tasty start to the day. A hot breakfast service is also available, but having gorged on all the curated local cold offerings, we simply didn’t have space!

In the Heart of Franschhoek

La Clé’s location offers the perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility. Set just five minutes away from the bustling centre of charming Franschhoek, the villas offer an ideal base for exploring local wine estates, gourmet restaurants, and boutique shops. But despite being so close to the action, La Clé feels worlds away.

La-Cle-Pool-

The lush, private garden, shimmering pool, and inviting outdoor spaces make it easy to forget that you are in the heart of one of the country’s busiest tourist destinations. We spent some time curled up on the loungers reading and also partook in a competitive game of swing ball, which was conveniently set up in the garden. It made for a fun afternoon – and a rather tender (admittedly underused) tennis arm the next day!

An Unparalleled Experience

La Clé Villas isn’t just a place to stay – it’s a destination. Whether you’re seeking a quiet retreat, a luxurious base to explore the Franschhoek valley, or simply a place to be pampered, La Clé offers it all. With a team dedicated to making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, every moment spent at La Clé feels like a special occasion. It’s a place to experience the very best of South African hospitality, which I maintain is some of the most thoughtful in the world.

For those who crave privacy, luxury, and a true sense of being pampered, La Clé Villas is the ultimate escape.

Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff – Luxury in the Heart of Johannesburg

Johannesburg may be known as a bustling metropolis, but nestled in its heart is a hotel that feels worlds away from the city’s pace. Four Seasons The Westcliff is a luxurious property that offers tranquillity and elegance, perched high on a hillside, providing panoramic views over the city’s tree-lined canopy. With its rich history, unique design, and exceptional service, The Westcliff offers an unforgettable stay that combines the best of city living with the charm of a secluded village.

westcliff-courtyard

A Charming Village Escape in Johannesburg

Originally built as an apartment block, Four Seasons The Westcliff has evolved into a unique venue that feels more like a small European village than a typical hotel. You think Joburg, you think high-rise skyscraper, but the property’s layout is designed to blend with its natural surroundings, which creates an intimate atmosphere.

Its cluster of buildings sprawls across the hillside in a terraced style, and guests are transported up and down the slope by golf carts, making the experience feel charmingly remote and relaxing. Once inside, it’s easy to forget that you’re in the middle of Johannesburg.

The only real point of curiosity is the lift column that transports guests from the ground floor to the restaurant. Its stark glass and metal design stands in sharp contrast to the rest of the hotel’s aesthetic, making it quite the conversation starter. On the plus side, the glass allows for views of the surrounding greenery, which a traditional brick structure wouldn’t offer. Despite its contrasting appearance, the lift is essential for navigating the hotel’s terraced layout, especially for those who may find the terrain challenging.

…the property’s layout is designed to blend with its natural surroundings, which creates an intimate atmosphere.

The Four Seasons Westcliff

During a recent stay, the trees in front of the hotel were lush and green, a refreshing contrast to the rest of the city’s otherwise quite dry and brown landscape. This view will be even more special when Johannesburg’s famed jacaranda trees begin to bloom shortly, which will turn the vibrant green into a stunning sea of purple. The hotel’s unique hilltop location will give guests a bird’s eye view of this.

Dining with a View: Flames Restaurant at Four Seasons The Westcliff

At the front of the hotel is Flames, The Westcliff’s renowned restaurant, under the guidance of executive chef, Wesli Jacobs. With its tiered layout, which seems almost suspended over an infinity waterfall and sweeping views over the city, it’s the perfect place to enjoy sundowners or a leisurely meal.

The restaurant draws Joburg’s elite – we observed business meetings unfolding over gourmet meals, spotted celebrities discreetly dining, and couples capturing picture-perfect moments of their romantic lunch for Instagram.westcliff-flames-deck

As the name suggests, the restaurant’s emphasis is on cooking over an open flame, offering a range of flavourful dishes, including wagyu and Chalmar steaks, seafood and more. Honestly, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something to enjoy on this menu. We loved the perfectly cooked Norwegian salmon, with fluffy couscous, bok choy, raisin gel, fennel and the silkiest Cape Malay velouté. The tender and juicy Chalmar 28-day wet-aged rib-eye steak, which was cooked to perfection, was also a standout. I would love to go back for the fried eggplant appetiser with romesco and punchy salsa verde – utterly delicious!

The menu at Flames includes a variety of elevated dishes and its location and view make it ideal for celebrating a special occasion. If you’re feeling flush and want to splash out, you can try the 1kg 24CT gold-plated Wagyu rib rack at R5950 – that’ll make for an interesting Instagram story!

Honestly, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something to enjoy on this menu.

There’s no better place to enjoy a relaxing meal while taking in the views over the city lights twinkling in the distance.

Elegant Rooms with a Personal Touch

The Westcliff’s rooms are spacious, luxurious, and thoughtfully designed. Our room was elegantly appointed, featuring deep navy wallpaper, crisp white linens, and a private balcony with a view. The attention to detail in the room’s décor adds to the overall sense of refined luxury, creating a relaxing space. Our room featured a desk, which makes working comfortable, there is also a business centre at the reception area which can be used if need be.

The Four Seasons Westcliff

Relax and Rejuvenate at Four Seasons The Westcliff Spa

For guests seeking an extra level of relaxation, The Westcliff’s spa is a gem. With a private pool and serene treatment rooms, it’s the ideal place to unwind after a busy day of exploring the city.

Guests can indulge in a range of treatments, from massages to facials, all while enjoying the spa’s tranquil surroundings. You can also enjoy a light snack or drink by the pool, in an exclusive-use area, only available to those making use of the spa.

westcliff

Separate from the spa is a second pool area, ideal for families and those wanting to soak up some Jozi sunshine. Complete with loungers, umbrellas and pool service, this is a popular spot come hot summer days.

Sumptuous Breakfasts at the Grand Dame of Johannesburg

One of the highlights of a stay at Four Seasons The Westcliff has to be breakfast. This lavish spread offers everything you could imagine, from freshly made waffles and pancakes to sushi, eggs cooked to order, and an impressive array of pastries. It’s the perfect way to start the day, whether you’re planning to relax by the pool or fueling up to head out to explore Johannesburg.

Four Seasons The Westcliff reminded me a bit of Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hotel, with its grand dame status (it was, at one stage, even painted a similar pink). The hotel exudes a sense of heritage and elegance that is reminiscent of the iconic Nellie. And just like its Cape Town counterpart, Four Seasons The Westcliff continues to evolve, with exciting additions like a new 400-seater ballroom and reception area set to open in 2025, further cementing its place as one of Johannesburg’s premier luxury hotels.

Joburgers will also be glad to know that the hotel will restart its afternoon tea service next year as well, which is welcome news to those looking for a treat or to celebrate a special occasion. A property like this is just made for it.

Exceptional Service and Attention to Detail

The Westcliff’s staff are exceptional; they bring a polished, attentive, and consistently warm service, separating this style of hotel from its contemporaries. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel at home, with staff always checking in to ensure that we had everything we needed. Whether arranging transportation up and down the hillside or offering suggestions for exploring the city, the team went above and beyond.

A Timeless Retreat

Whether you’re visiting for a romantic getaway, a business trip, or a special celebration, Four Seasons The Westcliff offers the perfect blend of luxury, privacy, and a sense of escape. It’s a garden oasis in the heart of Johannesburg, offering guests the chance to unwind while still enjoying the vibrant energy of the city

AtholPlace Hotel – A Leafy Oasis in the Heart of Sandton

Stepping through the doors of AtholPlace Hotel feels like entering a secluded oasis, far removed from the buzz and bustle of Johannesburg’s urban landscape. Nestled in leafy surroundings, this luxury boutique hotel is a soothing contrast to the hectic pace of city life. Whether you’re here for a quick stopover en route to the bush or for a business trip, it offers an elegant escape that feels miles away from the city, while still being just minutes away from vibrant Sandton.

AtholPlace provides a quiet atmosphere, which is a welcome contrast to the nearby business hubs of Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, both renowned for their world-class shopping and dining.

The hotel is part of the renowned Morukuru Family group, known for its collection of luxury properties. For those guests travelling further up to Morukuru properties within Madikwe Game Reserve, it’s the ideal place to stop for a few days and acclimatise. With its elegant surroundings and signature warm hospitality, it provides a seamless transition between city life and safari adventure.

Luxurious Rooms for Ultimate Comfort

Although our visit coincided with some of the coldest weather Johannesburg had experienced all year (due to heavy snow in the KZN midlands), AtholPlace provided the warmth and comfort we needed. The recently refurbished rooms are a stunning blend of contemporary design and luxury. The king-sized bed was heavenly, and the newly installed herringbone floors and tactile gold and mustard wallpaper added a touch of elegance.

Details like underfloor heating in the bathroom and the plush, soft robes were an absolute dream during the cold weather. The power shower was also one of the best I’ve experienced. Every detail has been meticulously curated, and a high level of craftsmanship is evident throughout the space.

The recently refurbished rooms are a stunning blend of contemporary design and luxury.

While we didn’t get to enjoy the beautiful pool area due to the weather, it’s easy to imagine how it would be the perfect spot to unwind on a sunny day – with the brollies up, loungers out and a good book in hand.  AtholPlace-Hotel

Dining at AtholPlace Hotel

While AtholPlace Hotel doesn’t have a formal restaurant on-site, they offer an incredible continental breakfast spread that includes warm, flaky pastries, freshly cut fruit, cold meats, cheeses, and a variety of hot options. Freshly squeezed orange juice and cappuccinos started the morning off on the right foot.AtholPlace-Hotel

For those who prefer to dine in the comfort of their room or by the pool (weather permitting), AtholPlace has an excellent all-day dining menu. Although the chilly weather didn’t allow us to enjoy the outdoor dining experience by the pool, we ordered food to the room – the crispy chicken burger was a standout.

AtholPlace is ideally located for business travellers who need to commute to Sandton, as well as for leisure guests looking for a peaceful stopover before heading to the bush. Awakened by the Wild at Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa

There’s a rhythm to the African bush that resonates deep within the soul – a pulse that connects and draws visitors from around the world to its dusty doorstep. At Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, the frantic buzz of city life feels worlds away; instead, elephants move with silent grace, lions rule with quiet authority, and mornings start with game drives and a sense of untamed possibility.  Whether you’re a visitor from afar or call Africa home, the spirit of the bush envelops you, forging a bond that reconnects you with this land in a way that lingers long after you’ve left.

Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa

Tucked away in the heart of Limpopo’s Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa offers a unique fusion of luxury, wildlife, and now, fine dining, that makes it a standout destination for nature and food lovers alike. From awe-inspiring wildlife encounters to world-class cuisine crafted by one of Cape Town’s most celebrated chefs, Mhondoro brings the wilderness to life in an unforgettable way. Over two days, we immersed ourselves in everything the lodge had to offer: thrilling game drives, luxurious accommodation, and a culinary experience that is sure to put the lodge on the foodie map.

Mhondoro, meaning “spirit of the lion” is more than just a safari – it’s an experience that will tie a part of your soul to Africa.

A Gourmet Escape in the Wild

Mhondoro’s culinary offering has been curated by none other than Luke Dale-Roberts, a name synonymous with fine dining in South Africa. Luke, known for his illustrious culinary career (The Test Kitchen, Salon, The Pot Luck Club, The Shortmarket Club, Fledglings), has partnered with Mhondoro to elevate the lodge’s dining experience.

Not only has he designed the new menu, but members of his team from his restaurants in Cape Town and Johannesburg, have been spending time at the lodge alongside him, training the in-house team to offer an extraordinary menu, quite unlike what you’ll find at most safari lodges.

In Luke’s true style, the menu at Mhondoro blends local ingredients with global techniques, creating dishes that are sophisticated yet grounded.

From our first bite at lunch – served at Mhondoro’s new and exclusive reception area (pictured below), at the gates of Welgevonden – it was clear that we were in for something special. This experience in particular is unique to Mhondoro – it allows guests, like us, who have travelled by road from Joburg for three hours, to ease into the safari experience with a relaxed meal, before embarking on the further one-hour drive from the gate to the lodge itself. It was a very welcome start to the experience and one that I think seasoned safari guests, foodies in particular, will fully appreciate.

Elevated Dining

The lodge’s menu has been infused with creativity and flair and, over the course of our stay, we enjoyed meals that were both artfully presented and bursting with flavour, quite different from the typical lodge fare.

Mhondoro will be offering its guests a superlative dining experience, with dishes like beef fillet with Luke’s famous truffle and pepper café au lait sauce (divine), kudu tartare and duck and citrus salad with truffle & port dressing. The menu will continue to evolve and adapt according to seasonality and availability.

…over the course of our stay, we enjoyed meals that were both artfully presented and bursting with flavour, quite different from the typical lodge fare.

I must also make mention of the gorgeous harvest table lunch, featuring tartlets, mini pies, and beautiful salads – made with veggies picked from Mhondoro’s own gardens. This harvest table offering is bound to become a signature lodge favourite.

On our last evening, the lodge’s boma area came alive with a roaring bonfire at the centre, and we gathered to enjoy a traditional South African braai, while the staff sang for us. The highlight for me was the savoury pap tart and a beautifully moist sticky toffee pud for dessert. Enjoying this under the stars made it all the more special.

Mhondoro-Safari-Lodge-

Big Five High Five

Our two days at Mhondoro were filled with game drives that brought us close to the wild in ways I had only imagined. Guided by the lodge’s experienced head ranger, Jaces, we were fortunate enough to get the ‘Big Five High Five’ – a celebratory high five marking the rare occasion when you see all of the Big Five animals during your stay. How lucky were we?

On our first day, we saw a mother cheetah and her two teenage cubs with a fresh kill, a sight that felt straight out of a National Geographic documentary. We also tracked Nyasa and Shaka, two lions newly released into the reserve. Shaka, true to his name, was regal and powerful, and our trusty ranger spotted him lounging just as the sun had dipped below the horizon.

On our first day, we saw a mother cheetah and her two teenage cubs with a fresh kill, a sight that felt straight out of a National Geographic documentary.

The next morning, as we set out on another game drive, we were treated to a bush tradition – Ranger’s Coffee – a delicious blend of coffee, hot chocolate, and Amarula, which was whipped up effortlessly by Jaces. We enjoyed coffee and snacks while we took in the sunrise over the koppie, and some of us were initiated with our first-ever bush bathroom break! (Note to bush newbies: thinking of coffee ahead of a bumpy game drive? Proceed with caution!).

Mhondoro-Safari-LodgeThe wildlife sightings kept getting better. Giraffes drinking at the watering hole, springboks darting through the grass (the 4-legged kind, not the green and gold kind) and we saw so many rhinos that we began calling ourselves the ‘rhino magnets’. Because Welgevonden is private and inaccessible to poachers, these rhinos live a blissful, unthreatened life, with their beautiful horns intact and no signs of PTSD – as it should be.

We even had the rare opportunity to witness a mother and baby rhino wandering mere meters away from us during a stunning sunset stop. The Mhondoro team had set up a sundowner snack table with ice-cold Cap Classique, which we sipped on while enjoying the perfect golden hour light, marvelling in sheer awe at the experience.

A Close Encounter at The Hide

One of Mhondoro’s most unique features is its 65-meter underground tunnel, leading to an exclusive game-viewing spot called The Hide, which is directly in front of the lodge. The tunnel opens up to a viewing window at a watering hole.
We were lucky enough to spend a few mesmerising moments at dusk, quietly observing a herd of elephants that wandered in, with their gentle yet giant presence and large ears flapping gently as they slurped water just metres away. This level of intimacy with the animals is rare, and it’s one of the many ways that Mhondoro brings guests closer to the heart of Africa.

Adding to the magic, Mhondoro’s saltwater swimming pool is another hotspot for wildlife sightings – elephants frequently wander up to drink from the pool, offering the perfect opportunity for an ‘ellie selfie’ if you’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

Luxurious Living in the Wild

The lodge itself is a sanctuary of quiet luxury, where attention to detail elevates every experience. Our Executive Suite, a spacious two-bedroom retreat with a private pool overlooking the watering hole, felt like a serene escape within an escape. Each evening, we returned to find the rooms carefully prepared, nets drawn down over the beds (even though this is a malaria-free area), and on one particularly special night, a bath drawn and waiting for us to sink into. Our rooms also each had an outdoor shower in case we wanted to take that connection to the great outdoors even further (admittedly that’s too much nature for this city girl).

The Spirit of Africa

On our last morning game drive, on the way back to the lodge, we were lucky enough to hear a radio call for a sighting of a female leopard. We found her sunning herself on a rock in plain sight, absolutely unperturbed by the desperate attempts to quell oohs and aahs and clicks of cameras. Having just enjoyed freshly flipped pancakes with salted caramel sauce, prepared at a stop mid-way through our morning game drive, it felt like a real gift to have ticked, what must surely be, just about all the ‘bush boxes’ there are to tick.interior-MhondoroThe experience at Mhondoro went beyond its luxurious setting and exceptional service – it’s a place where I truly felt reconnected to the spirit of the land I live in. You can’t help but feel in awe of the raw, unspoiled wilderness and the animals that call it home – it’s a connection that many South Africans, myself included, sometimes take for granted, but one that is revitalised with a visit to a place like this.

The experience lingers long after you’ve returned to city life, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the wild beauty that defines our country.

We Stay at the Palm House Boutique Hotel and Spa, Wynberg

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Upper Wynberg, Palm House Boutique Hotel and Spa is a peaceful sanctuary, offering an ideal escape from the frenetic pace of the city. It is perfectly placed on the cusp of the Constantia Winelands, and just a short drive from all the activities of the city centre. We recently indulged in their exclusive Indulgence Offer and were captivated by the lush green gardens, the unique Nordic Banya barrel sauna, delicious cuisine, and what can only be described as the best massage we’ve experienced in years.

A Grand Welcome at Palm House Boutique Hotel

The stately home, now a National Monument, has recently undergone a thoughtful refurbishment that marries its historic charm with modern luxury, making it ideal for business and leisure travellers alike. Its two and three-bedroom suites are ideal for families and are located in the gardens and around the pool area.

Although it was a typically wet and windy day when we visited, there is no doubt that the pool area will be a popular spot come summer. With sun-soaked loungers and its majestic namesake palms swaying in the background, it will be blissful.Palm-House-_-pool-arena

In the true style of its era, the pillared entranceway gives way to beautiful Herringbone floors, bespoke wallpaper, and graceful chandeliers that complement the original wood panelling in the reception area and the sweeping staircase. The décor is luxurious and inviting, striking the perfect balance between opulence and homey comfort.Palm House Hotel_lobby

We stayed in the Pinot Noir suite, located in the main house, along with 9 other rooms. Our room was incredibly spacious with a plush king-size bed and a sweeping view over the gardens.room-at-palm-house

Once we had checked in, we took a seat in the lovely bar and lounge area, complete with an enviable curved plush window nook, and enjoyed a glass of local MCC and snacks from the kitchen – including the most delicious Bitterballen!

A Serene Spa Experience

A visit to the Açaí Spa is simply a must. Located just steps from the main house, the spa is a haven of tranquillity, offering a range of wellness treatments using holistic products from the Healing Earth™ range. The wellness oasis courtyard, which is adjacent to the spa, features a unique Nordic pine barrel Banya sauna, complete with the sweetest shingled roof.

Alongside it is a bubbling jacuzzi – we spent time in both simply relaxing and enjoying the quiet and warmth on a rather cold and blustery August day. This time to unwind added an extra touch of luxury to our day and, for visitors who have been exploring the city, this will be the ideal way to decompress.

palm-house-acai-spa

The highlight of the spa for us was undoubtedly the couple’s massage in the dedicated treatment room. The two skilled therapists who looked after us, Leandri and Bianca, worked in harmony to create the most amazing experience.

The highlight of the spa for us was undoubtedly the couple’s massage in the dedicated treatment room.

From the curated playlist to the ideal temperature of the room, the thoughtful scents and the intuitive massage, we felt our stress and tension melt away. We left feeling deeply rejuvenated and relaxed, having experienced one of the most thoughtful spa experiences we’ve had in a long time.

A Foraged Dining Experience

The dinner we experienced at Palm House was a special event arranged for Women’s Day and dishes were a culinary showcase of Cape Town’s indigenous flora and flavours. This special dinner was prepared by Executive Chef Gregory Henderson, also known as The Forage Chef, and was inspired by Fynbos, with a strong emphasis on seafood and sustainability. Although this was a special menu for the evening, Chef Gregory’s menu for de Tafel restaurant at Palm House will continue to be inspired by the same and will be equally as inventive as it is delicious.

PalmHouseHotel-de-tafel-1x65

The 5-course menu included highlights like Saldhana Bay Oysters with smoked mayo, buchu gremolata, bokkoms and truffle pearls and Silverfish with seaweed candy, fish bone potato, amaasi and cornsilk cream. Special mention must also go to the Fynbos honey Panna Cotta with Heuningboegoe crème glacèe – divine!

Impeccable wine pairings from the inimitable Carmen Stevens, a pioneering female winemaker, elevated the experience, complementing each course and enhancing the flavours of the foraged ingredients.

Discover the Brookdale Winter Menu & Visit the Paarl Winelands

Winter has truly settled in, bringing with it the chill of dreary, cold days. But fret not, there are ways to remedy this – topping the list is the promise of fabulous winter food and cosy getaways. At Brookdale Wine Estate in the Paarl Winelands, they’re fully embracing the season with a delectable winter menu, crafted with locally sourced ingredients. But why stop there? Extend your visit with a stay in Brookdale’s boutique Manor House. Enjoy the full Brookdale experience by indulging in gourmet dining and unwinding in elegant comfort.

Brookdale-Estate-Manor

Bountiful Indulgence at Brookdale

Cold as it is, winter is the season of true indulgence. Think of rich, unctuous sauces and hearty, slow-simmered stews. Delicious braises that melt in your mouth and desserts that are the epitome of comfort – sticky, saucy puddings, and velvety custards.

Brookdale Bistro’s enticing new winter menu, created by Executive Chef Gary Coetzee, promises to elevate the dining experience at this beautiful destination in the heart of the Paarl Winelands. You can take in the change of the seasons with panoramic views over the vineyards, while you enjoy seasonal fare from the new menu.

There are hearty classics with French bistro flair and a contemporary twist. Rich, flavourful dishes such as Coq au Vin, Bouillabaisse, and Red Wine & Rosemary Oxtail are staples and these pair beautifully with Brookdale’s reds like their Mason Road Syrah or the sophisticated GSM blend.

For starters, we opted for the intriguing-sounding bobotie tortellini and the fried prawn and fish croquettes. Both dishes were very well portioned (you’re not leaving hungry, promise). The tortellini pasta was wonderfully light, and they sat in a pool of rich, meaty sauce, with sweetness from plump raisins. The Asian-inspired croquettes were deliciously crispy and served with a creamy mayo sauce, avo and fresh cucumber.

Since winning the Dineplan Reviewers’ Choice Newcomer Award for the Cape Town and Winelands region in 2023, the bistro has quickly become a favourite spot for leisurely lunches and delightful weekend dinners.

We loved the 58 Degree Lamb Rump with minted pea puree, crushed baby potatoes (little crispy, golden delights) and a velvety thyme jus. The lamb was so beautifully cooked and just melted in the mouth. We also found Chef Coetzee’s take on Coq au Vin refreshing – a ballontine of chicken with creamy mash and a bacon, mushroom and onion sauce – utterly decadent.

Brookdale-Estate-Bistro-Souffle-Dessert-

Struggling for space, we contemplated whether we could manage dessert. We were, however, swayed by our ever-diligent waiter, Mr Fox, who said we must try Pastry Chef, Marinesha Moore’s Milk Tart soufflé, and we couldn’t say no. The soufflé arrived, it all its quivering cloud-like glory and we dived in. It was heavenly!

Locally Sourced and Creatively Crafted

Chef Gary Coetzee is committed to using locally sourced ingredients, ensuring a balanced selection for both meat lovers and vegetarians. The Brookdale Winter Menu showcases his expertise in vegetarian cuisine and his knack for incorporating a hint of spice. Delight in lighter yet satisfying options like Red Lentil Dahl, Mushroom Risotto, and Char-grilled Miso Aubergine.

For seafood enthusiasts, dishes such as Mussels Meunière and Prawn and Fish Croquettes offer tantalising flavours, especially when paired with the estate’s Mason Road Serendipity Rosé or Chenin Blanc. If you can, try Brookdale’s Reserve Chenin Blanc Old Vine – it is glorious.

A Relaxed and Inviting Atmosphere

Brookdale is a quintessential bistro in every sense of the word – cosy and serving generous, tasty food, with the added benefit of a stellar view and its own range of wines, of course.

“We are proud to offer a relaxed dining experience where guests can cosy up next to the central fireplace or, on sunny days, relax on the terrace and enjoy the vineyard views,” says Chef Gary.

Julian, the butler at the Manor House, made sure we had everything we needed. He suggested trying Brookdale’s prestigious new release Chenin Blanc MCC, which we did while soaking up the winter sun on an unseasonably clear and crisp day. It was pure bliss.

The team are on hand to cater to any requests during your stay, and the intimate nature of the Manor House allows for privacy and complete relaxation.

Breakfast in the morning was a delightful feast, featuring freshly baked croissants and muffins, homemade granola, and handcrafted sausages. It’s served in a charming room that is bathed in morning sunlight, with the Klein Drakenstein mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop.

The Pinnacle of Luxury at Melozhori Private Game Reserve

Luxury can mean many things to different people, yet some experiences redefine it in unparalleled ways. A recent visit to Melozhori Private Game Reserve was a masterclass in what luxury can be, and it set the standard for what exclusive getaways like this should aspire to.Melozhori-The Lodge

The Magic of Melozhori Private Game Reserve

Situated near Stormsvlei, with the majestic Langeberg mountains framing its backdrop, Melozhori is an oasis of tranquillity and refined elegance. The Lodge, which is the weekend home of the Bhorat family, is the jewel of this reserve and is available for exclusive hire, offering a fully inclusive stay for up to eight guests.

Melozhori is an oasis of tranquillity and refined elegance…

In total, Melozhori accommodates just eighteen guests at any time, eight in The Lodge, with the remaining accommodated in two secluded self-contained pods, the stunning treehouse and a two-roomed, pet-friendly cottage. This ensures a high degree of privacy for all guests at any time, with your only distraction being sightings of the reserve’s abundant wildlife. All of the accommodation offerings are the last word in luxury, every detail met and then some.

Connected to Nature

Melozhori is more than just a getaway; it’s a sanctuary for guests, as well as for the wildlife that live in this predator-free haven. The reserve, formerly a cattle and sheep farm, has been meticulously transformed into 2,300 hectares of pristine Renosterveld and fynbos. Now a vibrant ecosystem, it is home to 38 species of game, 129 species of birds, and an array of indigenous flora. A plethora of buck, as well as zebra, ostrich, bat-eared foxes, giraffes and more flourish in freedom.

Melozhori is more than just a getaway; it’s a sanctuary for guests, as well as for the wildlife that live in this predator-free haven.

Our stay at The Lodge mirrored this sense of freedom – we found ourselves in a blissful state of detachment from the outside world. The Lodge offers a comprehensive all-inclusive experience, attended to by a dedicated team that ensures every desire is met. Our hosts, Coenraad and Lientjie Nell, supported by the attentive Melissa, Gift and Chef Marthinus Erasmus, were always nearby, ready to cater to all our whims and share fascinating insights about managing such an extraordinary estate.

The African Edition

The Bhorat family are committed to continually restoring this area with their transformative conservation efforts. Coenraad and Lientjie, who have been looking after the reserve for nine years, shared stories that painted a picture of the immense effort and passion required to rejuvenate exhausted farmland into a thriving natural reserve. So compelling, that I could easily see it being a riveting reality docu-series, something like “Clarkson’s Farm” but the African edition.

One of Melozhori’s most treasured inhabitants is the Bontebok, once on the brink of extinction, with only 17 left in the early 19th century. This elegant antelope, with its distinctive white face and striking coat, adds a touch of regal beauty to the reserve.

On our game drives, we were delighted by sightings of springbok, zebra, bontebok, gemsbok, antelope, waterbuck, ostrich, the gorgeous male Masai giraffe (with his unique coat pattern) and even a plucky hare, to name just a few.

Even if you’ve grown up in Africa, encountering wildlife is still a profound experience. ‘G is for Giraffe’ in many a favoured childhood book, and it’s easy to take for granted a picture on a page. Seeing these graceful animals up close is very humbling.

Raining on our parade

We encountered a few spells of rain, which thwarted some of our plans; we quickly retreated from one game drive and had to put a pin in plans for an infinity pool boma fire and a hot tub under the stars, however, the team seamlessly adjusted things so that we barely noticed. One of the most memorable experiences was a sundowner game drive to a secluded spot within the reserve. As we arrived, the Melozhori team were putting the finishing touches on the scene – a roaring bonfire and drinks, complete with a lavish cheese and charcuterie board, featuring housemade venison droëwors.

Mother Nature favoured us, allowing for the rain clouds to dissipate and reveal a sky streaked with hues of pink and orange as the sun set. As the day gave way to dusk, we reluctantly had to leave this magical setting, however, we were enticed by the prospect of a gourmet dinner prepared by resident chef, Marthinus Erasmus, and the promise of an equally roaring fireplace at The Lodge lounge.

Mother Nature favoured us, allowing for the rain clouds to dissipate and reveal a sky streaked with hues of pink and orange as the sun set.

Melozhori Private Game Reserve

Yes, Chef!

Chef Marthinus Erasmus has been delighting guests with his cuisine at Melozhori for two years. Having a chef who accommodates every dietary preference and whim is a rare privilege, and the food that he serves is more than just sustenance, it’s an integral part of the luxury experience.Chef Marthinus navigated our diverse dietary needs with ease and served delicious food course for course.

One of the standouts was a delicately prepared salmon dish, with a coconut and ginger sauce that ranks among my favourite meals of the year so far. Although equally impressive was the venison dish the evening before, as well as a lavender-infused cheesecake with honeycomb. Everything was vibrant, yet elegant and full of bold flavour.

On one of the afternoons, when the rain was being insistent, he treated us to a cooking demonstration, revealing the secrets of lightly smoking fresh salmon and crafting that aromatic ginger and coconut milk sauce. With the salmon smoking on the deck, and the view overlooking the infinity pool and the expansive hills beyond, it was hard to imagine a more idyllic setting.Melozhori-Lodge-poo

A Local Look

The design of The Lodge at Melozhori harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings, featuring earthy tones and rich textures. The tactile finishes of the walls and luxurious materials create a space that is quietly opulent yet inviting. Each of the four rooms, along with the main lounge and dining area, is positioned to offer sweeping views over the infinity pool and the vast reserve. The lofty thatched ceilings and expansive windows enhance the sense of space and light, while underfloor heating and sleek contemporary fixtures contribute to the overall sense of refined comfort.

At Home at Melozhori

Despite the undeniable luxury, Melozhori maintains a warm and homely atmosphere, which is attributed to its people; the friendly and approachable nature of the team ensured that we felt utterly at ease. We were invited to kick off our shoes, get comfortable, and feel at home in this extraordinary setting, and the exclusive use of the space allowed for a truly immersive experience.Melozhori Private Game ReserveUpon summing up our stay at Melozhori, I couldn’t help but reflect on the quiet elegance of the giraffes we encountered on our game drive – striking in their appearance and size, yet so graceful in the way in which they navigate their world. Melozhori strikes this same perfect balance – exuding grandeur yet remaining grounded and intimately inviting. A special place indeed.

Discover the Tranquility of McGregor at Rhythm Full On

In our fast-paced urban lives, we city dwellers often seek refuge from the constant rush. We yearn for weekend breaks in small towns, which promise a slower pace and a closer connection to nature. However, this search for tranquillity comes with an interesting twist – while these idyllic towns offer the perfect antidote to city stress, we urbanites often arrive with modern expectations; craving simplicity, yet also hoping to find the comfort of our almond milk flat whites and morning yoga sessions. We can be a difficult bunch to please.

McGregor has figured out how to balance the two. Known for its open-mindedness and as a haven for wellness seekers, it offers an escape from the hustle, while ensuring all the creature comforts. During a recent visit, we stayed at Rhythm full on, a private Airbnb home, designed with tranquillity and mindfulness at its core (and conveniently within walking distance to an amazing cup of coffee).Rhythm full on

Known for its open-mindedness and as a haven for wellness seekers, it offers an escape from the hustle while ensuring all the creature comforts.

Serenity in Design

Rhythm full on creates a sense of calm with its minimalist, almost entirely white decor. This intentional choice set the tone for our stay, which was to be a peaceful girl’s weekend, away from daily stresses and worries. The absence of a TV, personal mementoes, or distractions makes the space feel like a soothing blank canvas, perfect for unwinding and chilling.

Cottage-McGregor-Lounge

The accommodation is thoughtfully divided into two separate units on either side of a courtyard, ideal for couples or friends like us, who want to hang out but also want a bit of privacy during their stay. Both have a kitchen and bathroom, so are fully contained.

The units are fitted with Sloom beds and IYKYK. Sleeping on a Sloom bed was a life-changing, or should I say ‘bed-changing’ exercise. A friend who was travelling with me woke up and exclaimed, “This bed is just glorious!’ and has since purchased one for herself. Can a restful night’s sleep be so good that it prompts you to switch your bed? In a word, yes. It made both of us realise that the aches and pains we were waking up with were bed-related, and over the 2 nights we stayed, we confirmed this.

The offering of the Sloom bed was a considered choice for Rhythm full on and is part of the wellness experience. A good night’s rest can be elusive when travelling because unfamiliar beds can disrupt sleep. At Rhythm full on it was the complete opposite experience, in the very best way.

Can a restful night’s sleep be so good that it prompts you to switch your bed? In a word, yes.

Rythym-Full-On

A Retreat with Nature

Between the units, is a pretty stone courtyard featuring an edible eco pool. When I mentioned to the friends travelling with me that it was an edible pool, they were convinced that I had read it wrong and that I must have been hungry at the time. However, a little research revealed that it is indeed an edible pool, but the idea is not to pick ingredients for your salad from it, but rather that it is a plant-powered natural filtration system.

They are indeed edible varieties, like waterblommetjie, mint and lemongrass and they are hard at work cleaning the pool naturally. This eco-friendly approach eliminates the need for harsh chemicals, creating a more conscious and aesthetic swimming experience.

Turn up the Heat

Another wellness benefit of Rhythm full on’s offering is an amazing 2-person infrared sauna on-site (another thing our group was Googling immediately to see how feasible it would be to have one at home). Surprisingly they use less electricity than you think and cost around R4.18 per hour to run (an estimate based on R2.20 per KW/hr).

I’m going to admit that I was not brave enough for a cold water dip in the eco pool, but I did hop into the sauna for 30 minutes to benefit from its detoxifying properties. Those who did cold dip and then sauna raved about its cosiness. We loved the fact that it is Bluetooth enabled – we enhanced our relaxation with a guided meditation followed by some chilled tunes.

The Perfect Escape

Rhythm full on is located a short walk from McGregor’s main road and offers easy access to the town’s quaint cafés, restaurants, and thrift shops. We took a stroll to Temenos, a well-known retreat with beautiful expansive gardens (which they kindly let us walk through); here they also host frequent wellness workshops like sound journeys, intention-setting sessions and more, making it ideal for those seeking a holistic getaway.

We browsed the small but sweet Saturday morning town market and savoured the divine rugelach pastries and freshly baked banana bread at 51 on Main. The real highlight of our stay though, was the opportunity to slow down, cosy up under soft blankets with a heater nearby, and reconnect with each other.

Rhythm full on is located a short walk from McGregor’s main road and offers easy access to the town’s quaint cafés, restaurants, and thrift shops.

The owner of Rhythm full on is vegan and kindly requests that guests respect the space as a vegetarian household. This means no animal products are to be prepared or consumed on-site. This guideline not only reflects the owner’s ethical beliefs but also promotes a clean and mindful eating experience during your stay.

There are a few small restaurants on the main road, but it’s recommended that you book – many out-of-towners, like us, travel light, intending to do as little as possible (read: not cook or wash up!).

Book Your Stay – Winter Special!

Whether you’re looking to explore the charms of McGregor or simply seeking a quiet escape, Rhythm full on is a destination that harmoniously offers both. It is well-situated and has everything you need to have a wonderfully relaxing getaway, where you can opt to do as much or as little as you like.

Stay in Elegance at Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Stellenbosch, lies the venerable Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate. The farm’s story, which began in 1696, is an integral chapter of South Africa’s winemaking history and – under the stewardship of its new-ish custodian, German entrepreneur, Prof Dr. Dr. Peter Löw – it has quietly been undergoing a remarkable renaissance. On a recent visit to the estate, we witnessed firsthand some of the changes that have come into play.Vergenoegd-Low

New & Improved – Changes at Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate

From the moment you enter the grounds, change is evident. The entrance is all-new, completely separate from the original one and takes you up a long driveway past some of the luxury accommodation offerings at the estate.

Options include four Deluxe Lodge Rooms, located in the restored farm manager’s house, exuding a quiet but definite opulence through modern amenities and tasteful décor. There are also four Vineyard Suites, six free-standing Luxury Cottages, the Presidential Suite, and the Owner’s Villa. If you are after peace and privacy, you cannot go wrong with any of these options. Each has been tastefully designed with that exact idea in mind.

From the moment you enter the grounds, change is evident.

Our stay afforded us the comfort of a Deluxe Lodge Room, complete with a private hot tub, a well-stocked minibar, and a sumptuous double vanity bathroom. Set amidst the vineyards, it’s both peaceful, pretty and private.

Die Geuwels Fantasties

The culinary offerings at Vergenoegd Löw are a testament to its commitment to excellence. Geuwels and Clara’s Barn, the estate’s flagship restaurants, blend a fusion of local flavours and innovation, under the umbrella of well-known chef Bertus Basson’s dining group.

Clara’s Barn pays homage to its namesake, Peter’s wife, with refined fine dining dinner experiences. Geuwels offers both indoor and outdoor seating for breakfast and lunch and features small plates, highlighting unique local flavours. Both restaurants are led by head chef, Drikus Brink.

geuwels restaurant

After a quiet night’s sleep in our vineyard accommodation, we headed to Geuwels (Afrikaans for Gables) for a farmhouse breakfast of epic proportions. The menu begins with ‘plates’ with the likes of farm cheeses, charcuterie and seasonal fruit – this is just the start before you get to a hearty menu of hot options.

We opted for a Baker’s Basket, which sounds deceiving because what arrived was a large, funky tin lunchbox positively bursting with both freshly baked plain and chocolate croissants, as well as muffins, different types of bread and farm butter.

After a quiet night’s sleep in our vineyard accommodation, we headed to Geuwels (Afrikaans for Gables) for a farmhouse breakfast of epic proportions.

I’m not sure how, but we also managed to order a waffle with bacon, honey butter and fried eggs, which was enormous but delicious. We also made room for a ‘Bennie & Hennie’, a crisp chicken schnitzel on sourdough with Hollandaise – a zhushed up and slightly OTT farm-style eggs Benedict – divine!

Wine, Of Course

We were treated to an indigenous wine-tasting experience guided by Nuylo; this unique sensory tasting journey celebrates South African flavours. This struck me as the ideal way for tourists to sample things that they otherwise might find hard to come by (unless specifically looking for them) – things like spekboom, amasi, makatan, roosterkoek and mebos.

This is not a pairing but instead, you are invited to taste different things with different wines and find what flavours work for you. This was a refreshing approach that we thoroughly loved.

We sampled a variety of Vergenoegd Löw’s wines – the exceptional quality of their Cabernet Sauvignon came as no surprise, as they have consistently been recognised and awarded for its excellence year after year.

A Flock of Feathered Friends

Yet, amidst the wine and epicurean delights, the famed Indian Runner ducks steal the show at Vergenoegd Löw. A cherished tradition, these feathered custodians waddle down to the vineyards each morning; their presence is a testament to the estate’s commitment to sustainable viticulture.HR-Vergenoegd-Low_Indian-running-ducks_

As natural pest controllers, their role is an important one and they are an integral part of the estate maintaining its WWF Conservation Champion status, and its IPW biodiversity certification. Their daily ritual of snail, slug and bug breakfast keeps the vineyards pest-free in the most natural way possible and epitomises the harmony between nature and nurture.

…amidst the wine and epicurean delights, the famed Indian Runner ducks steal the show at Vergenoegd Löw.

If you’re visiting for breakfast or lunch, you’ll catch them as they promenade down to the vineyards or when they come back and enjoy a splash under the sprinklers. With a flock of over 1000 ducks, it’s a sight to behold, both for kids and adults alike.

Uncovering It All

A visit to Vergenoegd Löw is not merely another wine farm to chalk up, it’s so much more than that.

Custodian Prof Dr. Dr. Peter Löw’s commitment to preserving the heritage of the farm, but also catapulting it into this century, is evident everywhere. And from what we understood after chatting to members of the team, there is plenty still to come. Significant efforts have been invested not only in recounting the farm’s complex history but also in implementing innovative practices to ensure its continued prosperity as it moves forward.

Whether indulging in a wine tasting, savouring a gourmet meal or catching the runner ducks doing their thing, one thing is certain: Vergenoegd Löw is a destination where the past and present converge, leaving an indelible impression on all who make time to uncover what it has to offer.

Luxury Redefined at
Taj Cape Town

In a city brimming with five-star accommodations, Taj Cape Town distinguishes itself not only through its luxury amenities but also its unparalleled commitment to hospitality. Location, as they say, is everything, and Taj Cape Town commands a prime position on Wale Street, in the heart of the city, overlooking The Company’s Garden and St. George’s Cathedral and within proximity to the city’s most popular attractions. During a recent stay, we were dazzled not only by the hotel’s elegance and sophistication but even more importantly, the genuine warmth felt throughout the stay.Taj-Cape-Town-Lobby

Banking on Glamour

Drawing inspiration from its namesake, Taj Hotels infuse a sense of splendour and beauty reminiscent of the iconic Taj Mahal into all of its properties. Given that ‘Taj Mahal’ translates to ‘crown palace’, it’s no wonder that the interiors draw regal parallels. Housed within a historical building that was once the Reserve Bank, the air still carries a sense of gravitas and elegance. From marbled pillars and plush carpets to ornate gold accents and elaborate furnishings, the hotel effortlessly marries glamour with functionality.

In a city brimming with five-star accommodations, Taj Cape Town distinguishes itself not only through its luxury amenities but also its unparalleled commitment to hospitality.

A Bath with a View

The rooms at Taj Cape Town offer a sanctuary of comfort and style, with touches that make it that little bit more memorable. Our stay on the 14th floor afforded us breathtaking views of Table Mountain, and even on a cloudy day with a hint of drizzle, the splendour of the city was still evident. From our balcony, we could see church spires, ornate building facades and well-known landmarks, all from a stunning almost bird’s-eye perspective.Taj-Cape-Town-Luxury-Room

The glass-panelled bathroom is thoughtfully designed, allowing you to luxuriate in a warm bath while enjoying panoramic views of the city, fully capitalising on the hotel’s enviable location.

Housed within a historical building that was once the Reserve Bank, the air still carries a sense of gravitas and elegance.

Enjoy the Spice & Splendour of Indian Food

Dining at Taj Cape Town is like packing your passport and jetting off to the hustle and bustle of India. Bombay Brasserie, the hotel’s flagship fine-dining restaurant, captivated us with its innovative take on Indian cuisine, exploring dishes from both the north and south and everything in between.

Executive chef, Surendra Kumar, has come to Cape Town from India and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise – and a more humble gentleman you will be hard-pressed to find.

The fine-dining set menu (offered as vegetarian or non-vegetarian) is an experience of flavour starting with a chaat tasting plate, including nibbles and street food snacks like puri with vibrant fillings. Following that was a Cracked Pepper Rassam, a broth-like soup that is designed to wake up your palate, enhance your appetite and prepare you for the rest of the meal. It packed a peppery punch and delivered on every point.

From there, we ventured to the Tandoor Se section of the menu, with Adraki Lamb Chops and Chicken Tikka – both had that unmistakable smoky tandoor flavour. For mains, we sampled Lucknow Ki Lamb Nihari (spiced lamb shanks), Chingri Malai Curry (prawns in coconut milk), Butter Chicken and Kerala Alleppey Fish Curry. It sounds like a monumental amount but the portions are just right for sharing, and if you’re dining with a partner, you can pick different things and sample it all. You will leave satisfyingly full, make no mistake.

The Butter Chicken was an absolute standout, the best I have ever had and it has probably spoiled me for all others going forward (hot tip: look out for winter specials, which include Butter Chicken on Friday nights). Served with this are all the expected Indian accoutrements, including the most divine naan to mop it all up. It’s a sensational lesson in real Indian cuisine and is not to be missed.

The Butter Chicken was an absolute standout, the best I have ever had…

Around the World with Whiskey

The Taj Whiskey Lounge and Lobby Bar is home to an impressive selection of spirits from around the globe. We embarked on a journey of discovery through the world of whiskey, guided by the knowledgeable and affable Mfundo, whose passion for his craft was infectious. We sampled an American, Irish, Indian, Scottish, South African and Japanese whiskey, each paired with a canapé, while Mfundo taught us the ins and outs of this age-old spirit.Taj-Cape-Town

We embarked on a journey of discovery through the world of whiskey.

I must also make mention of the Taj’s excellent signature cocktail menu, with a fun and flavourful selection of crafted drinks. The Mumbai Mango Madness, with Monkey Shoulder, mango, coconut syrup, drops of smoked saline and chilli foam was exceptional. Also, try a Goa Gold Martini with Hennessy, jaggery syrup, yoghurt, rosewater and pineapple juice. The barmen can also whip up a mean Whiskey Sour.

Mouthwatering Meals at Mint

Mint is the hotel’s all-day dining venue, where we truly savoured the essence of Taj Cape Town’s hospitality, from the sumptuous breakfast buffet to the exquisite al a carte dinners.

Breakfast is set over two rooms and is a veritable feast, with everything from pastries to hot breakfasts, swirly parfaits, yoghurts, fruit, fresh honeycomb and more. It also includes an Indian breakfast selection, chai, and a full-cooked menu as well. The brioche French Toast (which I had with berries instead of banana) was exceptional – by far, the best I’ve ever had and worth every calorie!

Dinner at Mint was also memorable with a text-book pull-apart braised short rib dish, crispy squid and other tasty bites. I baulked at the thought of the monumental amount of planning that must go into feeding the whole hotel such a selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For Chef Kumar, however, who is used to catering for occasions in India that run to thousands of guests at a time, this is almost a walk in the park and he seems to take it totally in his stride. Appearing at every service, and cooking in the Bombay Brasserie kitchen at night.

J Wellness Circle & Other Amenities

Beyond the culinary delights, Taj Cape Town offers a wealth of amenities to indulge the senses. From the tranquil indoor pool to a gym and rejuvenating spa, J Wellness Circle. The spa is a quiet and peaceful space, where we enjoyed a stunning massage.

Grounded in the elements – Akash, Vayu, Agni, Jal, and Prithvi (space, air, fire, water, and earth) – the spa offers a haven of peace and quiet. It’s a sanctuary where you can enjoy a sauna, take a swim, relax in the jet bath, breathe deeply, and absorb the tranquillity

Beyond the culinary delights, Taj Cape Town offers a wealth of amenities to indulge the senses.

Everything and More at Taj Cape Town, Cape Town

With its impeccable service and attention to detail, Taj Cape Town sets the standard for luxury hospitality in Cape Town; it’s more than a mere stay, it is an immersive experience.

A Luxury Getaway at Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa

Nestled within the tranquil landscape of Somerset West, amidst a collection of historic wine estates, lies the prestigious Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa, right alongside the renowned Erinvale Golf Club. The grounds were originally part of Adriaan Van Der Stel’s expansive homestead ‘Vergelegen’ (‘far situated’), established in 1700, and so named because back then, it was a good day’s ride on horseback from Cape Town. The vast estate was eventually divided into what is now Erinvale (‘Irish Valley’) flanked by Vergelegen, Lourensford, and Morgenster wine estates.

Set against a backdrop of the scenic Hottentots Holland Mountains, Erinvale epitomises contemporary elegance in a countryside setting. Recently, we ventured to the heart of the Helderberg, trading horseback rides for the speed of modern transport, to immerse ourselves in the hospitality of Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa.

Erinvale Hotel & Spa

Bold Colour & Vibrance at Erinvale Estate Country Hotel & Spa

Although established in 1994, the hotel has undergone some fairly recent revamping, with the final revisions happening to the spa area currently.  The opulent Irish-green marble and striking palm tree wallpaper of the reception area set the tone for our arrival – bright, bold and welcoming. This theme of vibrant foliage wallpaper and rich hues is consistent throughout the hotel’s communal spaces and creates a sense of contemporary luxury.ERINVALE hotel

The hotel is set in immaculately manicured indigenous gardens, with enviable lush grass, established camphor and oak trees, water features and pockets of colour from local flora. There is a selection of 56 rooms, ranging from spacious suites to premium and classic accommodations. A section of these gorgeous rooms is housed in a traditional white-washed Cape-style thatch-roofed building, perfectly mirroring the L-shaped architecture of the original farmhouse structures.

… vibrant foliage wallpaper and rich hues create a consistent theme and create a sense of contemporary luxury.

The interiors are sophisticated, featuring mid-century furniture characterised by clean lines and gentle curves. Gallery-style collections of artwork adorn the walls, with a mix of both modern prints and traditional paintings. The curated artwork, which is featured throughout the property, is quirky and cool and lends a touch of eccentricity to the country surroundings. erinvale-roomOur room had an exceptionally comfortable bed with plush white linens and a selection of pillows to choose from to ensure a blissful night’s sleep. Attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the room, from the premium quality linens to the block-out blinds, which resulted in a rejuvenating night’s sleep.

The morning sun warmed our patio, where we savoured a quiet moment with coffee and homemade biscuits from the turn-down service the night before, setting the perfect start to our day before breakfast.

Bits and Bites

The hotel has a selection of fantastic culinary offerings. The Oak Terrace served us a sumptuous breakfast buffet, complemented by a diverse selection of hot dishes. The space extends to a lovely outdoor terrace that is surrounded by gardens and shaded by tall oaks.

Breakfast is presented on stylish ceramics from local designer Mervyn Gers; a stellar cup of coffee and Eggs Benedict (and possibly a scone with strawberry jam too) started the day off in a delicious way.

Come evening, the Oak Terrace transforms into the Magnolia Social Dining Lounge, offering a casual yet stylish dining experience, with a fabulous accompanying cocktail menu. Plush jewel-coloured booths and chairs in deep ochre mustard and emerald green create the look, with accents of gold and ambient lighting finishing the mood. The menu consists of a ‘small plates’ offering, divided into Land, Ocean and Earth, as well as a selection of starters, salads and mains like burgers and steaks. Magnolia-Erinvale

Plush jewel-coloured booths and chairs in deep ochre mustard and emerald green create the look…

We were so impressed with the food; the small plate portions were very generous (country-sized versus city-sized), and each boasted pretty plating and punchy flavour. We loved the Burrata Salad with fresh tomatoes, basil pesto, green olives, almonds and balsamic drizzle.

From the not-so-small small plate Land menu, we tried the smoked brisket bao buns, which were to-die-for and I don’t say that lightly – they were some of the best I’ve had. The Spicy Fried Squid from the Ocean selection was crisp, light and divine. The Tempura veggies from the Earth menu were also delicious, with just the necessary amount of crunch and ratio of golden tempura batter.

We appreciated the genuine and friendly service we received from the restaurant team and, in fact, everyone we encountered on the property. There is a sense of warm country hospitality that is unobtrusive and well-executed.

Spoilt for Choice

During our stay, we ventured to EARTHBOX at Lourensford for an immersive underground dining experience and explored the vibrant market there the next day as well. The intention was to visit the other farms that flank Erinvale, as well as to pop over to the golf course, but once ensconced at the tranquil pool area with a novel, it proved challenging to muster the will to leave.

Something for all

A Luxurious Urban Getaway at the More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel

Have you ever explored your city as a tourist? We often associate getaways with venturing far beyond our familiar surroundings, but sometimes, merely escaping everyday household demands like the ever-growing laundry pile or the persistent call of the garden, can revive the mind and spirit. I recently experienced the heart of Kloof Street from this perspective, while staying at the lovely More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel. While I know the area well, it was refreshing to enjoy it as a visitor, and I was surprised to learn that More Quarters resides right in the beating heart of it.

More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel

If you’re familiar with Kloof Street, you’re bound to know Upper Union Street, which runs perpendicular and is home to the fabulous Upper Union Restaurant. With its black and white chequered floors, chic chandeliers, plush velvet green seating and twinkling fairy lights, it’s one of the area’s hotspots. You might also make the connection that the restaurant is linked to the gorgeous Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel. But wait, there’s more, literally. More Quarters is another gem of this collection and its tucked-away location is part of its charm.

Nicol and King Streets, both off Kloof, are charming cobblestone pathways running parallel to each other that provide the picturesque setting for the rooms of the More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel. Adorned with wrought iron gates, patterned tiles, and white rose bushes in planters lining the streets, you can’t help but feel as if you’ve been transported to a quaint side street in Italy or Spain.More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel

Each of the 23 apartments at More Quarters is meticulously designed, bright and spacious, with tasteful modern furnishings and pops of vibrant colour in graphic wallpaper and finishings. Each room has a well-stocked kitchenette with cutlery and crockery to prepare food if you opt to stay in during longer stays. The apart-hotel room style offers loads of privacy and flexibility and will appeal to guests who want to come and go but still want the luxury of a serviced room.

Depending on your room you may have a small private courtyard where you can enjoy a quiet coffee or a glass of wine, as we did. Three of the rooms are interleading and can form family-sized spaces if travelling with kids.

The attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the plush sofas to the carefully chosen amenities.

The beds are incredibly comfortable – I slept like a dream. Once the doors are closed it’s completely quiet – you’d never believe you’re in a hyper-urban area with buzzing nightlife and busy roads.

Dining at Upper Union

Upper Union restaurant has become one of my favourites simply because it is consistently good. The restaurant is just a few steps from More Quarters and can be found by navigating through one of the interleading passages that connect the apartments with the Cape Cadogan.

Each time I have dined here I have been impressed – Head Chef Amori Burger and the team have elevated sharing plate dining to an art form, and I can’t think of anyone in Cape Town doing it better.

Upper Union

Everything on the menu appeals, so narrowing down what we wanted to have was the first hurdle. The house bread course, with infused butters from Cream of the Crop, set us up for the rest of the meal. I highly recommend the Sea Bass Ceviche – my husband is a ceviche fanatic and he said this was the best he has had. With pineapple amba, green papaya, ginger and tiger’s milk, it was a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity and was a celebration of the seafood.

Upper-Union-Food

I also absolutely adored the fire-grilled cabbage with Dalewood Boland cheese, candied walnuts and almonds. The Puglia burrata was also dreamy, as was the chicken & duck pastilla and the southern fried chicken thigh. Honestly, it was hard to separate the deliciousness from one plate to another. The service is exceptional and everything was just on point from start to finish.

The restaurant vibe is intimate yet lively and creates the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable dining experience. All this coupled with those gorgeous interiors sets Upper Union apart as a must-visit if you are staying at More Quarters.Upper-Union conservatory

A Little You Time

Being in the heart of Kloof Street, you won’t be short of things to do. More Quarters is perfectly placed to walk the street, popping into shops, galleries and cafés. Table Mountain, The V&A Waterfront and many of the city’s top destinations are right on your doorstep.

Guests staying at More Quarters can make use of the pool area at the Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel, which is easily accessible via a corridor through the buildings. The splash pool in an enclosed courtyard is perfect for cooling off in hot summer months, or just absorbing some Vitamin D as the weather cools. With tasselled umbrellas and comfy loungers, it was the ideal spot to spend the afternoon catching up on a novel I had long been trying to finish.

There is also an on-site spa that has been recently re-done and is connected to the pool courtyard; guests can book in for a treatment like a relaxing massage or facial and a little personal relaxation time.

An Enhanced Guest Experience

Breakfast at the hotel is served in a café-style dining space, located just opposite the reception area. The menu is varied and caters for different dietary requirements. I opted for the vegetarian and gluten-free red lentil pancakes topped with guacamole and dukkah – they were divine. Their eggs Benedict is also a winner, as is their coffee – very important!

More-Quarters__Breakfast-Room

Breakfast also includes a continental buffet of yoghurts, muesli, cheeses, cold cuts and parfaits. The menu includes plant-based and gluten-free options, with a note of ingredients displayed with each dish, showing that they know and cater for the modern traveller. Ice-cold kombucha also made for a welcome addition to the morning offering.

High-Tea at More Quarters

For those after a late afternoon treat (read: me), I loved the offer of a different cake or sweet treat on the daily, which you can enjoy in one of the lounges or take to your room. Also, the evening offering of wine or sherry with light snacks like biltong and nuts encourages guests to poke their heads out of their rooms and connect before heading out for the evening.

Book Your Stay

One of the standout features of More Quarters is the impeccable service provided by the staff. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure that every need is met, offering personalised recommendations for local attractions, dining, and activities.More-Quarters

More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel is ideal for a broad spectrum of visitors. Families with young kids will love their Mack & Madi Explorers programme, aimed at ensuring kids are well looked after and entertained (child minding services are available upon request). It will equally suit those travelling for business who need a central and easily accessible location with speedy WiFi and the comfort of space to work from. Equally travellers from out of town will love the proximity to tourist faves and the plethora of drinks and dining options right on the doorstep.

Savouring the Islands: A Gourmet Journey Through the Cuisine of Seychelles

An island getaway is often hailed as the epitome of relaxation – where endless stretches of pristine white sand meet the warm embrace of turquoise waters. Luxury resorts extend seamlessly to lines of inviting chaise longues – the promise of hours basking in the sun, relaxing and swimming just the roll of a towel away. And, of course, plenty of delicious food and tropical drinks with tiny umbrellas are a given!

As a destination, Seychelles has so much to offer – exquisite luxury resorts, local cuisine that celebrates spice and seafood, and a year-round warm climate.

Welcome to the Seychelles

A recent jaunt around the islands of Seychelles was more than just a quest for the perfect tropical tan; fueled by an insatiable appetite for culinary exploration, we embarked on a five-day journey to savour the cuisine of Seychelles and experience what some of its top resorts had to offer.

Laïla Resort, a Marriot Group Hotel

Our inaugural night experienced a small hiccup with a delayed arrival, but the staff at Laïla Resort, a Marriot Group Hotel, warmly welcomed and accommodated our arrival, which was well past midnight local time.

We woke that morning to find ourselves in the lap of luxury – Laïla Resort is a vibrant and contemporary hotel set out in a village style. Is suited to the traveller looking for luxurious comfort in a convenient location, and is ideal for exploring Mahé.

We eagerly anticipated a day filled with exploring the island, and once ready to roll, we headed down to have breakfast – a delightful buffet featuring an array of pastries, cured meats, cheeses, and fresh juices.

Fully sated, we ventured out, ready to confront the island heat that awaited us – admittedly probably a little unready for just how intense the humidity would be!

It’s Getting Hot in Here

Before our taxi got out of second gear, the first beads of perspiration had already formed, but this was promptly forgotten as the first breathtaking beach came into view. It’s a surreal experience seeing your first Seychellois beach, and we had to stop the van and hop out to take a good look.

Mahé is the tropical island you see in glossy brochures; its exotic allure, white sands, and palm trees waving in the breeze reel you right in.

We resisted the temptation for a dip there and then – we had things to see and do! We clambered back into our taxi bound for Victoria, one of the world’s smallest capitals.

As our guide Nicholas navigated the narrow, winding roads, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of slight disorientation amidst the steep, inland granite mountains covered in thick tropical jungles – such a juxtaposition to the Cape landscape back home.

Mahé is the tropical island you see in glossy brochures; its exotic allure, white sands, and palm trees waving in the breeze reel you right in. This was all in stark contrast to our previous evening’s travel challenges and the formalities of the airport – the woes of travel troubles were quickly forgotten though. Interestingly, the airport was only opened in 1972; before this, there would have been far fewer of the tourists we see bustling around the island today.

The Rich History of Seychelles

Colonial echoes reverberate in and around Victoria, Seychelles’ capital city. The famous Victoria Clock Tower, or as it is better known in Creole, Lorloz, is a mini replica of Big Ben, erected in honour of Queen Victoria.

The Supreme Court building, now the National History Museum, and a Bust of Pierre Poivre Statue, showcase the Seychelles’ colonial heritage. Pierre Poivre was the French naturalist responsible for bringing cinnamon to the Seychelles, where previously, it was a closely guarded treasure of the Dutch East India Company.

Amidst historical monuments, the city centre bustles with life, featuring small retail outlets, bakeries, restaurants, and a tapestry of religious buildings. Eighty percent of Seychellois people are Catholic but you will notice the South Indian Hindu Temple, with its multi-coloured rainbow of soft pastel hues stands proud – a nod to the multi-cultural acceptance on the Seychelles islands.

To Market We Go

At the heart of it all, the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market offered a glimpse into local life, where the island’s culinary and cultural pulse beat vibrantly.

Amidst the heat and humidity, muscular fishmongers skillfully prepared their catches, surrounded by eager sea birds vying for scraps. Spices and colourful fruit-and-vegetable-adorned stalls provide tourists and locals alike a shared experience of authentic island life and a glimpse into the local reliance on the bounties of the sea.

Venturing into the central mountains of Mahé, a winding drive unveiled breathtaking views of the azure ocean from all angles. Numerous hiking trails fork off the road and into the tropical forests with their giant and centuries-old vegetation.

At the peak of San Soucis mountain, Mission Lodge, originally named Venn’s Town, offered historical significance amidst ancient trees and ruins. It was the perfect moment for a reflective pause, with its panoramic views of the west coast of Mahé.

The journey continued to the Tea Factory, offering not only more incredible views but also a glimpse into a working tea factory. The quaint tea shop/restaurant provided a quiet interlude to our exploration.

Constance Ephelia Resort

Descending to Constance Ephelia Resort, we were enveloped in supreme luxury, and the relatively tough decision of whether to go to the North or South beach. Both are world-class beaches and are a constant source of debate as to which is better.

The resort is the quintessential island dream, from sun loungers nestled in the shade of exotic trees to sand-floored cocktail bars. Taxied golf buggies became our essential mode of transport as we explored the large resort, winding through protected mangrove forests, keeping an eye out for the elusive turtle and immersing ourselves in this special part of nature.

The resort is the quintessential island dream, from sun loungers nestled in the shade of exotic trees to sand-floored cocktail bars.

Dining at Constance Ephelia

Constance Ephelia caters to all tastes with six restaurants on the resort premises – everything from casual Mediterranean dining at Helios (a good choice for lunch), accompanied by an ice-cold local Seybrew beer. Adam and Eve Bar offers Asian cuisine, and Zee Bar is your go-to beachside cocktail bar. We were lucky enough to enjoy sundowners and snacks on the beachfront here.

An evening at Cyann, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, proved to be a culinary odyssey. General Manager, Stephane Duchenne, is passionate and French influences were evident, as we savoured local ingredients and flavours, brought together with European techniques.

The local octopus dish stood out, showcasing a delicate balance of fresh flavours and vibrant bursts with punchy sauce vierge. The risotto carnaroli ‘acquerello’ allo zafferano, crafted by their Italian chef, was a standout, highlighting the richness of aged acquerello rice.

The Constance group’s commitment to luxurious hospitality shone through, evident in the group’s vast, collective wine cellar boasting around 30,000 bottles selected from around the globe. Wines like Puligny-Montrachet, from the heartland of fine Chardonnay, complemented the fine dining experience.

The suites at Constance Ephelia are large and luxurious, with details like pillow menus and reusable glass bottles of complimentary mineral water – part of the resort’s commitment to the environment. The memory foam pillow definitely eased the after-effects of many glasses of fantastic French wine.

Morning brought a more casual affair at Corossol – a buffet-style restaurant, where nearly every culinary desire is met. Fresh fruits and pastries, and expertly prepared hot breakfasts are enjoyed in open-air dining areas, surrounded by cooling shallow infinity ponds.

Fab Fun in the Sun at Club Med

It was then time for some old-fashioned fun in the sun as we were headed over, by boat, to St Annes, home of Club Med resort. From the minute your toes touch the island sand, you are in for entertainment. Club Med offers it all – from beachside pools to kids’ clubs, water aerobics, Padel, tennis, Hobie-cat sailing, giant tortoises, late-night parties fuelled by local Takamaka rum, and impossibly low limbo dancing.

This was where we enjoyed some sublime beach and pool time. If you get tired of lying around, you can grab a snorkel and flippers; within a few kicks you will find yourself floating amongst crowds of exotic fish such as parrot, angel, and zebra – and if you’re really lucky, a turtle or two.

Hotel suites are stylish, spacious, and contemporary in design. Touches of bright modern colour add pizazz, and there are beautiful island views from the balconies.

Themed evenings are big at Club Med and the evening we were there was Creole. We enjoyed the unique experience of poolside Moutya music, brought to the islands by African slaves, which encompasses rhythmic drumming and lyrics that often speak of past injustices during slavery. In those days, music was a way of escaping the hardships of the day and would have been accompanied by rhythmic swaying and sensual dance, led by the local women.

Experiencing True Seychellois Cuisine at La Grand Trianon Marie-Antoinette

Our next destination was the famous La Grand Trianon Marie-Antoinette Restaurant on St Louis Hill, overlooking Victoria. A 50-year-old, three-generation, authentic Creole restaurant that is the epitome of the cuisine of Seychelles. Housed within a historic Creole home with a charming interior, tables of local businessmen mix in with tourists keen to get an authentic taste of Seychellois cuisine. If the walls could talk, they would tell you stories of the legend of the house, Kathleen Fonseka, who, with her broad and welcoming smile, built a legacy of serving generous local cuisine that her grandaughter still serves today.

The food is as authentic as it gets, and for a first-time visitor, it is recommended that you go for their signature board. Packed with a variety of exotic local dishes including fish curries, parrot fish fritters, octopus salad with fresh salsa, tuna steak with Creole salsa, and spicy chicken curry. Spice is part of life – most locals grow chillies in their home gardens, and it’s customary to not leave without tasting one.

Off to Explore Praslin

The next hop was to the island of Praslin, and then an hour by ferry to the Bay of St Anne. Admittedly, the swells of the Indian Ocean are not always for the faint of heart, but at the first sight of Praslin, you know it was well worth it.

Praslin seems like an even more exotic and larger-leafed tropical forest. The forests here are home to the unique Coco de Mer fruit, which is native to the Seychelles. Coco de Mer is seen as a treasure by most Seychellois, and it is illegal to take it off the island.

Constance Lemuria

We headed directly to Constance Lemuria, another incredible haven of luxury resort life. The dramatic natural wild vegetation is contrasted by the manicured resort lawns and the fairways of celebrated golf courses that stretch up through the mountainous tropical landscape.

Again, because of the sheer size of the resort, we were transported by buggy along elevated pathways that stretch over giant tortoises and to the main reception of the hotel, which is perched high on a hilltop.

A fun thing to note here is the unique ceremonial arrival – the sound of a large gong signals for the oversized door to magically open to reception. Water cascades over steps that take your eye in the direction of multiple luxurious pools and onto another breathtaking Seychellois beach view. This must be one of the most impressive locations of all the resorts we saw.

The Constance Lemuria suites are contemporary, mainly white with touches of ocean blue. The luxurious bathroom is connected to the bedroom via wooden shutters that can be opened to take in the spectacular island views from the balcony. This is a haven of comfort and luxury at the next level.

Dining at DIVA

DIVA is the dedicated fine dining restaurant of the Constance Lemuria resort. We were met by General Manager, Bruno Le Gac, a man passionately obsessed with luxury hospitality and fine food. We anticipated that we were in for a treat as Executive Chef, Jordi Vila, from Spain had worked under world-renowned chef, Ferran Adria, and hosted the famous chef at the restaurant too.

With the knowledgeable Bruno at our side, we went through a gastronomic adventure of the highest order, featuring tapas dishes of local fish tacos, crab, and cheese soufflé with a crunch. The highlight of this meal, however, was the yellowfin tuna avocado cannelloni, with a deliciously rich and decadent lobster bisque. Many of the dishes featured interesting techniques, combining textures with liquid or light foams, and playing with the contrast of hot and cold elements. Chef Vila has been at the helm for ten years and he is given the freedom to constantly experiment and tweak his menus.

The main dish of confit local red snapper (one of the chef’s favourites) was delicately dressed with a blood orange emulsion. Perfectly cooked and expertly paired with a 2018 Santenay Clos Des Hates Hubert Lamey. There are 10 sommeliers at this resort, so they take their wine seriously.

Bruno offered us a personal post-dinner tour of the cellar. As a South African, it was great to see South African wines lying side by side with some famous Burgundies. Winemakers like Adi Badenhorst, Duncan Savage, Chris and Andrea Mullineux, and Eben Sadie are held in highest regard.

On a morning tour of the estate, we visited The Nest restaurant, elevated on a rocky crag that overlooks one of the most beautiful beaches. Sadly, this restaurant was closed, so we were unable to experience the Creole menu, but there’s always next time!

Making Sushi in Seychelles

A fun offering at Constance Lemuria is sushi making on the beach – there are probably few places where you can enjoy this kind of unique experience with such a beautiful backdrop. And while technically not traditional Seychellois cuisine, this is one of the best ways to enjoy fresh-caught island fare at its best.

We got to work making our sushi using locally caught tuna, and then enjoyed it at a table near the beach, with an accompanying cocktail, of course.

The Sublime Savoy Hotel

Our final night was spent at the exclusive Savoy Hotel back on Mahé Island. This is a large and beautiful hotel, with comfortable rooms and all the amenities you could wish for. Most of the rooms are set around a large central pool. For the first time on our tour, we decided to test ordering in-room service, as the island had been hit with torrential rain and had some significant floods, so it was sadly recommended that we stay indoors.

Saying Goodbye to Seychelles

As a destination, Seychelles has so much to offer – exquisite luxury resorts, local cuisine that celebrates spice and seafood, and a year-round warm climate. People are friendly and hospitable, and astounding natural beauty is unparalleled. Island life is intoxicating and a Seychelles holiday is certainly a gift to all visitors – an unmatched experience of a lifetime that should be on your bucket list.

Indulging the Senses at Franschhoek Country House

Travellers to the gorgeous Franschhoek Valley are spoilt for choice; whether it be luxury accommodation, award-winning wine or epic culinary pursuits, the options are endless. With so much to choose from, it can be challenging to find just the right spot to spend your precious vacation time. Our recent sojourn to Franschhoek Country House was “tout à fait charmant” (utterly charming) and not only met but exceeded our expectations entirely – a sensory experience that left us blissfully relaxed and thoroughly revitalised.Franschhoek-Country-House

Provençal Bliss

The boutique country property stands as a beacon of tranquillity; set just on the outskirts of the village, it is one of the larger properties in the area, with 25 inviting spaces that range from standard rooms and garden cottages to spacious luxury villas.

The main manor house, which interestingly was an old perfumery, has been transformed into a central point around which the rest of the village-style accommodation is situated. The Provençal-inspired look features buildings in a rustic gold colour, trimmed with soft teal.

Exposed face-brick, curlicued iron trims and columns create a feeling that you have stepped into the French countryside. Wrought-iron urns with aged patina are dotted around the gardens and are filled with fresh lemons, water flows gently from various fountains and archways covered with rambling roses and other flora create a tranquil haven. Garden enthusiasts will admire the beds overflowing with Crocosmia, Agapanthus, Lavender, and more.

The stylish country feel is carried through in the interior, which is both sophisticated and warm. Arched doorways, vaulted wood-trussed ceilings, and 4-poster beds with soft white linens make each room a sanctuary of comfort. Our villa was elegantly designed with French country-style furnishings and a panoramic view of the surrounding vineyards and mountains.

Exposed face-brick, curlicued iron trims and columns create a feeling that you have stepped into the French countryside.

The accommodation seamlessly blends modern amenities with Old-World charm, creating an ambience that is both inviting and refined. We loved the gorgeous bath, complete with bubbles and candles, as well as a built-in sound system with relaxing music that can be played throughout the suite. Whether you choose a cottage or a luxe villa, you’ll find yourself immersed in luxury, with thoughtful touches at every turn.

A Feast at Monneaux Restaurant

Nestled within the estate is Monneaux Restaurant, offering a menu of exciting dishes that blend locally sourced produce with French and South African epicurean influences; dishes are extremely generous and beautifully presented.

If the weather permits, there is a gorgeous outdoor area, complete with soft candlelight, hedged garden and wall fountains, which creates an intimate setting that feels quite otherworldly – Bridgerton-esque, as someone commented.

We were invited to a unique pre-dinner experience – a gin tasting featuring three local gems paired with oysters. The intimate tasting featured gins from Distell (Cruxland), as well as Inveroche Amber and Six Dogs, each paired with an oyster with a topping that complemented the gin’s tasting notes. What we loved about the selection is that each gin was completely different from the next – each offering unique subtle complexity.

Although we loved them all, our favourite was a toss-up between the Zoo-biscuit-reminiscent Six Dogs and the warmth of the Inverroche Amber. Given its warm spicy notes, which reminded us a bit of the festive season, Inverroche ultimately won the day, with its accompanying oyster dressed with a nuanced truffle oil and citrus dressing.

Our meal featured lots of delicious bites but the stand-out dishes included the beef sirloin tartare with pickled shimeji mushrooms, Parmesan shavings and pan-fried shallots – we scraped up every last morsel. The lemongrass-glazed pork belly was also a winner, with charry red cabbage, miso crème and ginger and lemongrass foam. Rich, yet balanced and utterly yummy.

If the weather permits, there is a gorgeous outdoor area, complete with soft candlelight, hedged garden and wall fountains, which creates an intimate setting that feels quite otherworldly – ‘Bridgerton-esque’, as someone who I showed pictures to commented.

Although Franschhoek is awash with amazing dining experiences, it is great to be able to have an excellent meal onsite, especially after a day of being out and about exploring. If you’re not staying at the hotel you can also book in for lunch or dinner and enjoy the team’s hospitality and delicious food. (Bookings are currently open for Christmas Lunch).

Breakfast at Franschhoek Country House is also a veritable feast. A beautifully displayed spread is prepared, including everything you could wish for from local cheeses and charcuterie to freshly cut seasonal fruit. Cereals, pastries yoghurts and juices are all on offer, and that’s before you get to the cooked options!

I adored the hummus toast topped with fried aubergine, halloumi, avocado and almonds. This, along with a great cup of coffee, was the best way to wake up, so much so that I had it both mornings of our stay!

Pools of Bliss

One of the things we loved most about this property is the grassed swimming and relaxation area, featuring two pools, one cold and one heated. The pool area is surrounded by ample comfy loungers and umbrellas, and a dedicated server is there to take drinks and food orders throughout the day.Franschhoek-Country-House Pool Area

Freshly made lemonade and water are also provided, along with towels. All you need to do is arrive from your room with your book, your sunscreen and a plan to do nothing but settle in and relax. Possibly the only disturbance of the day is the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which passes by the hotel on one of its routes to and from various wine farms. The entertaining part is listening to how the voices and the revelry onboard comically increase as the day wears on and more farms are visited!

Why You Should Visit Franschhoek Country House

Beyond the walls of Franschhoek Country House lies a haven of serenity – a sensory indulgence in the best possible way. Whether breathing in the scent of fresh lemons and elderflower, basking in the warmth of sunshine at the pool or on your suite’s balcony loungers, or indulging in delicious food from Monneaux, you are spellbound by its magical touch.

The team’s dedication to creating an oasis where guests can escape the ordinary and embrace ultimate comfort is evident; the mood is serene without feeling standoffish and every staff member we encountered was friendly, and accommodating. A stay at Franschhoek Country House is not merely a getaway; from the moment you step onto the estate until the time you bid farewell, each moment is a celebration of the finer things in life, leaving you with memories that linger long after your journey comes to an end.

Paws in Paternoster –
A Pet-Friendly Winter Escape at Gonana

The Cape West Coast is a magical place, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich maritime heritage, and captivating fishing villages like Paternoster – a charming coastal time capsule that beckons visitors no matter what the season. Paternoster may not seem like a go-to place during a frosty, wet winter, however, another side to its captivating essence is revealed during these months. Cold winds whip across the Atlantic Ocean and storms unleash their power and it is precisely at this time that a weekend break here becomes an enchanting experience. Don’t believe us? Read on.

Winter on the West Coast

The Gonana Collection, located in Bekbaai, Paternoster, is a perfect spot to escape the city for a weekend and actually embrace the weather, rather than shy away from it. The Collection comprises a main guesthouse with 7 rooms and an Apartment, as well as 3 separate Studios, 2 separate Houses and a 3-bedroomed Villa.

For any traveller to the area, there’s an accommodation style to suit. Even better, they offer pet-friendly accommodation options, making this a truly rare find. gonana-aloe-house

Aloe House

We booked Aloe House, a one-bedroomed unit just a stone’s throw from the beach and the main guesthouse. The contemporary Afro-Scandi decor blends local flavour with the owner’s Swedish heritage, and together this results in a stylish palette of natural tones and textures. The look is hygge minimalism, with thoughtful comfort at every turn.

Gonana-interiorGonana-bedroom

We loved the soothing hues, the chic accents and the fact that everything has been thought of with both functionality and luxury in mind. From electric blankets that warmed up the bed to just the right level of toastiness to comfy robes and soft mohair blankets to cuddle under.

The look is hygge minimalism, with thoughtful comfort at every turn.

An Eco-Wise Getaway

The collection is guided by environmentally conscious principles, which was an important consideration when developing in a heritage community such as Paternoster. Solar electricity heats the saltwater pool and runs the properties – the absence of loadshedding was a very welcome change.

All bathroom beauty products are local and paraben-free and bottles are refilled instead of being replaced. The honesty bar stocks no plastic, strict recycling is in place, rainwater is harvested and grey water is used where possible. These are just a few of the many eco-conscious practices in place.

Pet-friendly Accommodation at Gonana

As dog lovers, we’ve always felt a pang of guilt when leaving our furry friends behind while we venture off to explore new destinations. The fact that Gonana offers pet-friendly accommodation in its Apartment, Houses, Villa and Studios allowed us to have a fun family getaway, with our two Boston Terriers along for the adventure. Gonana was the recipient of the Afristay Pet-Friendly Destination 2022 Award, so as well as being great for humans, it’s fabulous for your four-legged friends as well.

Gonana kindly catered to our boys with a comfy bed each, which they sniffed and investigated at length, as well as a tasty bag of treats on arrival. Pets can be a tad unsettled in new environments, but as soon as they found their spots in front of the fireplace, there was no further convincing needed!

Cosy Comfort

The self-catering units at Gonana have been stocked very thoughtfully; from a well-equipped kitchen with everything you need to prepare light meals, to the inclusion of basics like olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. There is also an honesty bar with wine, soft drinks, local gins and snacks, which was a welcome addition to a self-catering space.

The real clincher for us though was the fabulous indoor fireplace. It just gives the unit a different charm and it becomes the perfect place to embrace cosy moments catching up or indulging in the simple pleasure of a good book.

The guesthouse sells wood, firelighters and matches, so you can get started as soon as you arrive. We got the fire going as soon as we set foot in the door and had it pretty much going during our entire stay, warming the unit and making it hard to leave!

Gonana Guesthouse

Gonana Guesthouse itself is located directly on the beach at Bekbaai and you can walk out of your room and pretty much directly onto the beach. We took gaps in the storming weather to walk down from Aloe House to take the dogs for walks along this unspoilt stretch of beach, which borders the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve.

There is a stillness and remoteness to West Coast beaches that is unparalleled and, during stormy weather, the beauty is elevated almost to eerily ethereal levels.

At Gonana Guesthouse you can also enjoy a gorgeous breakfast spread, which you can book for at R150 pp if you are self-catering. The team at the guesthouse lay out a fabulous spread in a communal dining space that includes yoghurts and cereals, fresh bread and baked goods, a hot breakfast selection and excellent coffee.

There is a stillness and remoteness to West Coast beaches that is unparalleled and, during stormy weather, the beauty is elevated almost to eerily ethereal levels.

Be Embraced at Gonana

The overarching feeling we got from the Gonana collection is that it knows the idyllic space that it occupies. There is no need for pomp and circumstance, it is thoroughly comfortable knowing the serene beauty and the warm hospitality it offers.

Being that Aloe House is so well equipped and the fireplace so alluring, we didn’t feel the need to do much other than a few walks on the beach, and I can’t think of a weekend away that has been quite as unencumbered and restorative.

gonanaPaternoster itself, with its untouched beaches and unhurried pace, is a place that nurtures the soul and rejuvenates the spirit. Here, the rhythm of life follows the ebb and flow of the tides, creating a sense of harmony that is both comforting and revitalising. Grandeur Amidst the Vineyards: A Stay at the Grande Roche Hotel, Paarl

There is so much beauty to be found in the Winelands at this time of year – the vibrant autumn hues of the vineyards paint a mesmerising tapestry across the rolling hills. Nature has gracefully shed its summer green, replacing it with a stunning array of golden yellows, fiery oranges, and deep crimson reds. At the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl, this change of season is abundantly clear in the beautiful views over the vineyards and valleys; a chilly wind whispers across the landscape but the crisp air also carries the comforting scent of wood smoke, emanating from crackling fires. It’s the ideal time to indulge in the warmth of both nature’s palette and the inviting ambience of the hotel and surrounding wineries. I’d go as far as to say this is one of the best times to visit the area…

The Grande Roche Hotel

The hotel itself is unique in its positioning – a farm within a town, giving guests the best of both worlds. If you’ve left the city for a country escape, you’ll be happily ensconced in nature with lush flora and the backdrop of Paarl Rock. If you’re planning to explore the area, you’re close enough to everything to do just that.

The original land title was granted in 1717 and the land was farmed for many years, with vineyards being added by its original owner, Hermanus Bosman. The property became a hotel in 1992 but has retained some of the vineyards – these form part of the grounds around which several of the rooms are situated.

The Rooms

The hotel has 31 rooms dotted across the property, each with a unique position or story – some are restored coach and carriage houses, some worker’s quarters and one was even the original farm stable, now a luxury stand-alone room with a private sun terrace and enclosed patio.

Our room overlooked the vineyards awash in magnificent autumnal colours; out the front window, we watched the mist rolling in and consuming the valley below like a great, billowing beast. Fortunately, we were happily tucked up in our suite, enjoying a glass of wine and a book.

Our room overlooked the vineyards awash in magnificent autumnal colours…

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about the smell of thatch for me, especially on a day when the air is frosty and the air is scented with woodsmoke. Our pitched thatched roof added a layer of country charm to our suite, which was brightened with vibrant protea wallpaper.

Grand-Roche-Hotel-bathroom

The spacious bathroom with a large walk-in shower contrasted with slick, dark slate tiles and a mosaic feature in black and white. Fabulous shower pressure, underfloor heating and a gorgeously curved modern tub made this space both functional and fabulous.

The Hotel Grounds

The hotel boasts large grounds that are well worth a walk around. Gorgeously manicured gardens and hedges with rose bushes and, even as the seasons are changing, a riot of colour. The property also has a sweet little chapel that is 300 years old and has been the venue for many a wedding, christening and other celebrations.

Grand Roche also has a modern event venue – L’Atrium, that will speak to any plant-lovers soul, as it did to mine. A stunning space that is bursting with lush greenery, complemented by contemporary finishings – an amazing space for a special celebration, conference or party.

We also have to mention the lounge, which is a beautifully decorated and chic little nook complete with fabulous jungle wallpaper, velvet seating in bright jewel colours and a black and white chequered floor. This is an ideal spot for a morning coffee, an afternoon cocktail or just a natter with a friend. This room is opposite one of two pools on-site, the second one being located further up the property, alongside the spa.

Dining in Grand Style

The restaurant and bar are housed in the main manor house building; the gorgeous gold and black interior was designed by Francois du Plessis and is a glittering space just begging for a celebration. In fact, during our stay, the restaurant was host to an awards lunch and a 60th birthday wine-and-canapé-pairing party. The convivial atmosphere of a group of people chatting over tasty bites and clinking glasses is exactly what a space like this is designed for.Grande-Roche-interior

Gorgeous velvet seating in rich gold, statement chandeliers, and sharp-looking black cabinetry make this space stylish and thoroughly modern.

The food is taken care of by chef Kevin Grobler, a well-known name in the Winelands. The menu changes according to the season, so is a constant evolution that is tailored to what is available. We were booked in for the Pearl of Paarl package, which includes an overnight stay with breakfast,  signature cocktail, 4-course dinner at the restaurant including a bottle of wine, as well as a selection of canapés. We enjoyed the canapés while sipping on the ‘Pearl of Paarl’, a brandy-based cocktail that was created to mark the hotel’s 30th anniversary.

Small Plates, Big Flavours

Small plate menus excite me and befuddle me in equal measure – I love all the choices but I am terrible at choosing. It is just as well then that we were doing 4 courses each, as this gave us the opportunity to sample 8 across the menu.

There were many highlights – we loved the pork pot stickers, dunked in sesame and chilli dipping oil with crispy bits. Also, the perfectly cooked fire-roasted fish course was a real stand-out, with a delicious cauliflower cream, crispy chorizo and wafer-thin slices of pickled pear for acidity. The pork belly dish was also expertly cooked; meltingly tender with a sweet, jammy nori glaze and caramelized onion mousse.

Positively popping by this point we opted to take our dessert to our room to give ourselves some breathing room. The gorgeous miso crème caramel that we enjoyed later was an absolute delight.

It was absolute bliss to sink into the comfy king bed and have a peaceful night’s sleep in the quiet of the Paarl countryside.

Visit Paarl

Grande Roche has been an important part of the Paarl landscape for many years – its legacy of fine hospitality and chic opulence is firmly rooted and continues to grow. As the seasons change, one thing remains constant, and that is that guests visiting the hotel can expect excellent service at all levels in gorgeous, ever-changing Wineland’s surroundings.

Hospitality and French Country Charm at La Petite Ferme, Franschhoek

La Petite Ferme boutique winery and luxury accommodation sits just a short way up the Oliphants Pass in Franschhoek and enjoys an unprecedented view over the vineyards and valley below. Nestled into the mountain and surrounded by tall trees, it’s easy to think you’re in a little corner of rural France.
La-Petite-Ferme-

Contemporary Country Chic

The hotel was recently revamped, and while its decor and finishings maintain elements of its Huguenot heritage, it has a thoroughly contemporary look that brings it in line with the best in the area.

Accommodation at La Petite Ferme consists of vineyard cottages, as well as a Manor House that is divided into separate luxurious suites. These can be booked individually or by a group travelling together, which would give you carte blanche of this secluded area.

La-Petite-Ferme

Room with a View

Our room, the John & Carol Suite, is part of the Manor House and shared a gorgeous pool and view with the other three rooms. The room was incredibly spacious and beautifully decorated in monochromatic tones, with warmth from luxe velvet blankets and decorative cushions.

The design focuses on luxury, while not forgetting functionality, and boasted a lovely outdoor area with cosy seating. Special touches included underfloor heating, outdoor daybeds and a stocked minibar with snacks, drinks and jars of delectable cookies and rusks to enjoy.

The stunning bathroom deserves a mention all of its own –  it was the kind that you mentally pin for one day when you build your own dream home (just me?). Floor-to-wall screed in an aged ivory tone, with tap fittings in the most gorgeous brushed pale copper/rose-gold colour. A large walk-in shower, separate egg-shaped bath with a floor-standing gooseneck tap mixer and heated towel rails.

Wine The Afternoon Away

La Petite Ferme has its own vineyards and the view from the lush lawns in front of the hotel overlooks these. It is nothing short of spectacular in the afternoons as the sun moves over the Middagkrans mountains behind the hotel and bathes the valley in a warm glow.

They currently make a Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a few special winemaker labels as well.

La-Petite-Wine-and-Lifestyle-(wine)

Luvuyo, one of the knowledgeable wait staff, guided us through an afternoon wine tasting, which was held in the lush gardens overlooking the vineyards. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience; with the winter sun warming us to toasty perfection and the freedom to just sit back and take it all in, it was utterly relaxing. After tasting the range, we decided that the barrel-fermented Chardonnay was our personal favourite.

Our wine tasting was followed by afternoon tea, which can be taken in the restaurant, gardens or your room. Given the loveliness of our room, we decided to enjoy our baked cheesecake with spiced berry compote while sitting on our terrace. Absolute bliss.

Dining at La Petite Ferme

The restaurant at La Petite Ferme is a popular spot for guests and non-guests alike to enjoy an elevated dining experience. Not only do they provide an à la carte menu but also a fabulous Chef’s Table dinner, ingredient-themed evenings and other exciting food & wine experiences that can be enjoyed during your stay or booked if you are visiting as a non-guest.

The restaurant at La Petite Ferme is a popular spot for guests and non-guests alike to enjoy an elevated dining experience.

The menu is full of delicious options that make choosing quite difficult. To start we had the burrata with smoked tomato pearl, tomato dust and pickled cherry tomatoes. A good burrata is always satisfying and the smoked tomato element of this dish played so well with the creaminess of the cheese.

We also tried the Crispy Squid with Pea Puree and Pickled Ginger – another classic dish that delivered both in looks and nuanced flavour from various elements.
Beef-Ribeye-

For mains the Franschhoek Trout was a no-brainer; this local sustainably farmed fish was delicious with a light white wine veloute. The other selection was a toss-up between the house classic of Karoo Lamb in Phyllo or the Duo of Beef. The duo won out, and the absolutely melt-in-the-mouth fillet and crispy crumbed pulled oxtail were both perfection. With cauliflower purée and chargrilled baby onions, it was everything you would expect from this bistro classic.

We simply couldn’t manage dessert and it was with much regret that we missed out on this course – a first I think! Apple of My Eye – an apple sorbet with candied baby apple and vanilla custard sounded heavenly, as did Study of Chocolate – chocolate mousse with blueberry gel and strawberry ice cream. Alas, we simply couldn’t fit in another bite… all the more reason to come back though!

A Restful Haven

As the hotel is set away from the busy town of Franschhoek it is exceptionally quiet and makes for a great place to retire to after a busy day of sightseeing in the area. It was genuinely one of the most peaceful and restful night’s sleep I have had in a while. Country living is where it’s at!

Breakfast is served on the same terrace that overlooks the vineyard views; taking in the panoramic vistas while enjoying an excellent cup of coffee is the perfect time to cement your plans for the day. With an absolute plethora of things to do in the area, your hardest decision is going to be picking where to begin.

As the hotel is set away from the busy town of Franschhoek it is exceptionally quiet and makes for a great place to retire to after a busy day of sightseeing in the area

We loved that the continental element of breakfast was delivered to our table. Jars of yoghurt and cereal, a stunning fruit platter, cheeses, charcuterie and a tray of mixed pastries. This way of serving is one of the legacies of the Covid time period that seems to have continued at a lot of establishments and is a positive change. It takes the thought out of selecting from a buffet-style set up and means that you can just relax and indulge.

Of course, there is a varied hot menu as well, and our eggs Benedict and Classic Chataeu breakfasts were both lovely.

One thing which really stood out for us at La Petite Ferme was the exceptional service we received from every single member of the team. From the cheerful greeting at the gate to bubbly on arrival, a swift digital check-in, room tour, wine tasting and restaurant service – we couldn’t fault anything. Every person we encountered was polite, helpful and impeccably mannered.

Our stay, while brief, was thoroughly enjoyable. We felt rested, well-fed and most of all well taken care of. If you’re looking for country-style accommodation, with a team behind it that will ensure you make the most of every moment, you will find this at ‘the little farm’ La Petite Ferme.

Luxury and Style at The Marine Hotel, Hermanus

The seaside town of Hermanus is known globally for its spectacular land-based whale watching. Around September each year, the waters of Walker Bay are filled with Southern Right whale mammas who come to birth their calves on its shallow, sandy sea bed. But aside from that obvious draw card, the town itself is always a pleasure to visit and has become a year-round go-to for local and international guests alike. The Marine Hotel could not be better placed to host guests – not only is its location absolutely unrivalled, sitting atop the rock face with an uninterrupted view of the bay, but it also offers its guests sophisticated comfort that comes from years of hospitality experience.

A Grand Old Lady

The hotel, also known as ‘the Grand Old Lady’, is 121 years old and has been an iconic part of the coastal landscape all these years. Previously, calling a lady ‘old’ could get you into trouble, however,  we seem to have finally cottoned on to the fact that ageing gracefully is something to be celebrated, and the hotel has certainly done that.

Having been family owned and operated for many years, it has enjoyed much success and hosted famous guests throughout its history. From the days of hosting dances in its grand ballroom, to now offering a sophisticated stay for travellers from around the globe.

‘… ageing gracefully is something to be celebrated, and the hotel has certainly done that.’

In the nineties, it was bought by the Liz McGrath group and is part of the portfolio that also includes The Cellars-Hohenort and The Plettenberg. The group is underpinned by a philosophy of offering a world away from the ordinary and each of the hotels in the group strives to do just that with unique positioning, beautiful interiors and seamless service.

The Marine Hotel

The hotel itself is a brilliant white beacon that stands out on the coastal rockface and, while thoroughly modernised, it retains some of the old-world charm of its historic past in its architecture and furnishings.

The sea-facing side of the hotel is edged by verdant green lawns that roll out to meet the purpose-built cliff path. The cliff path is a must-do Hermanus activity; it meanders 11km along the coast and allows you to take in the beauty of the area. The area is protected under the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the walk is well worth it. If you don’t feel like walking, there are benches right outside the hotel that are perfect for taking in the views.

The sea-facing side of the hotel is edged by verdant green lawns that roll out to meet the purpose-built cliff path.

The hotel also benefits from being situated right alongside a tidal pool, so if the idea of an early morning cold water swim grabs you, you can literally roll out of bed and into the sea. If that doesn’t rouse you, coffee on the terrace surely will. The Pavilion is the hotel’s restaurant and is named after the original bathing pavilion in Muizenberg – it even boasts original art-deco light fittings from the old Pavilion itself.

Sacred Spaces

The Sun Lounge, at the hotel’s entrance, is a luxurious bar and lounge area with comfortable seating, the perfect place to sit back and enjoy a cocktail or perhaps your book if you are so inclined. The danger of spaces like this is that they are so comfortable, once you are ensconced you don’t want to leave – just me?

The hotel also offers a fabulous Afternoon Tea here, which I can imagine is utterly fabulous and decadent. I wish we’d had the time to do this but it’s always good to have a reason to come back.

The-Marine-Afternoon-Tea-

The Rooms

The hotel has 40 rooms in total, ranging from premier suites to luxury doubles with sea views and regular doubles.

Our room was super spacious and plushly decorated in soothing tones of blue. These sapphire tones are carried through in the beautiful sea view from the main window. The waters of the old harbour below almost seemed close enough to run your hand through.

Dining In

As we had been out wine tasting in the Hemel-en-aarde valley all day, we opted to stay in our room for dinner. There is something utterly decadent about cosying up in robes (which, by the way, were ridiculously soft and snuggly) and diving into a Wagyu burger, served with the best onion rings ever!

Room service is prepared by The Pavilion restaurant and while there is a specific in-room dining menu, you can order exactly what you would have if you were sitting in the restaurant. After a long day of exploring this was the ultimate way to spend the evening.

Breakfast is also served at The Pavilion and an enviable spread is put on. Everything from pastries to smoked salmon, fresh bread, cold meats and cheeses, fruit, muffins, yoghurt and cereals – and that’s just the continental spread! The hot menu is also varied and I was very happy to see a specific carb-free hot breakfast option, not many places do this and I appreciated that thought – it’s details like this that make the difference.

Stay Awhile

Our stay at The Marine, while short, was utterly relaxing. If we had had more time, we would have booked a treatment at the onsite Spa or taken a dip in the very inviting-looking pool. That being said, we enjoyed a wonderful stay and were impressed with the impeccable service and friendliness of the staff we encountered.

Something that also sets the Liz McGrath group apart from the rest is that they offer pet-friendly accommodation – something that is so rare at fine hotels. Have a look at their pampered pooch amenities if you want to travel with your best furry pal.

The town of Hermanus has plenty to offer in terms of art, shopping, cuisine, wine and nature but if you book in to stay at The Marine, you’ll be forgiven for not wanting to leave its cosy confines. It has everything you need to enjoy a relaxing and restorative stay.
