I have always felt like Glen Williams and his team manage to maintain such high standards of food and service and yet do so without pretension. In a nutshell, it is always a pleasure dining at Foxcroft, and after all, isn’t that exactly what it should be?

Restaurants in the time of Covid

It’s no secret that the restaurant industry has suffered heavily as a result of the global pandemic and so it is heartening to see patrons out and about enjoying their favourite spots again. Foxcroft is taking every precaution to ensure a safe dining environment for guests and the open outside area, weather permitting, is really lovely.

On a summery day, when the temperature is just right and a gentle Constantia breeze rustles the leaves on the trees that shade Foxcroft, there are few places better to be.

Dining at Foxcroft

If you’re just getting back into the swing of things with dining out, you can opt for Foxcroft’s reduced lunch menu, which, at R395 pp for 4 courses, is a steal. Add in a wine pairing (R695) or perhaps 4 oysters (an additional R135) and you have yourself a really great meal out.

Having been cooped up at home for far too long without the pleasure of this kind of intricate cooking, we dived headfirst into the full menu (R595 pp, available with wine pairing at R1045 pp).

To Start

We kicked off with the oysters (is there a better way to start a meal?), with kimchi dressing adding a touch of spice, compressed cucumber for freshness and a dash of coriander oil. Absolutely sublime.

Foxcroft’s well-known focaccia, filled with green olive tapenade, is also always a welcome way to get started.

The Market Fish Crudo course was melt-in-the-mouth yellowfin tuna, served on a base of Malay curry dressing, with naartjie kosho (a Japanese-style chilli condiment that adds kick) and the most divine crunchy poppadom crisps.

This course was followed by one of my favourites of the day – Blesbok Tataki. Brioche melba crisps were the perfect carrier for ultra-smooth liver parfait, a dollop of spiced fig purée and a bite of pickled mushroom – the liver adding just the right amount of creaminess to the lean venison. All in all, just the perfect mouthful.

Wine Pairings

One of the other things that I have also always enjoyed about Foxcroft is their wine pairing selections – always well chosen and interesting. We especially loved the Ashbourne Pinotage-Cinsault 2019, which was served with the tataki dish.

Another standout was the Vergelegen Red Blend 2002, accompanying a delicious lamb dish dressed with a bay laurel cream, which I loved.

My partner enjoyed the pairing of City on a Hill White 2008 with his Steamed Linefish (Cape Bream) with the silkiest charred corn velouté ever.

Fully into the mode of tasting again (lockdown, what?), we also sampled the stunning pork belly from the reduced menu, served in a coconut sauce. The clincher on this dish was the sour tamarind glaze on top of the pork – something I am definitely going to try replicating myself. I just love the way tamarind fires up the tastebuds on the sides of the tongue and makes you want to go back for more. This was also served with one of my favourite wines of the day – Domaine Des Deux Chardonnay 2015.

Sweet Ending

In my books, it’s tough to go wrong with desserts and both that we tried were light and joyful, just the way a meal should end. A Bergamot Syllabub with shortbread and a Whipped Chocolate Ganache with a salted caramel centre and the prettiest rose petal meringue bark.

(Above 2 images not by Claire Gunn)

Oh, wait, going back a course, I definitely have to mention the delightful bite that was the cheese course – a wafer-thin cracker piped with the most heavenly smoked Stanford cheese crème. I could have eaten that cheese topping by the spoonful!

Book Your Table at Foxcroft

Our very-on-the-ball server Angus looked after us throughout the meal, offering interesting information about the wine and making sure that our courses arrived swiftly. If you have dined there previously, then you already know that it’s worth a revisit – the current menu is full of dishes that will become new favourites.
