\"2017<\/a>This year the ABSA Top 5 Olive Oil competition became the ABSA Top 10 Olive Oil Awards, showing the ever-increasing scale and quality of local olive oils that deserve recognition. The 2017 ABSA Top 10 Olive Oil Awards winners have recently been announced and 10 worthy winners were awarded this top honour. The competition awards oils in 3 categories, namely delicate, medium and intense styles.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral encouraging factors influenced our decision to double the number of winners,\u201d says Willie Zastron, Provincial Head Business Banking, ABSA.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201dThe continued growth seen in the quality of locally produced olive oils, the rise in the number of SA Olive Award entries, as well as the consumer\u2019s increased demand for quality olive oils and loyalty to local suppliers, have convinced us to expand the platform for recognition to the top 10 olive oils. In this way we are not only pledging our support to individual producers, we are simultaneously creating opportunities for increased commercialisation in a fast-growing industry, access to markets and sustained job creation in rural communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

While stronger intensity olive oils can have a recognisable bitterness and pungency, delicate oils have less of these characteristics and are suited to dishes where a more subtle flavour works. 2.\u00a0MEDIUM STYLE\u00a0EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL<\/h3>\n

Medium intensity olive oils\u00a0<\/strong>are less robust than their intense category\u00a0counterparts but not as mild as delicate oils. They are a great choice for a palate that prefers some pepperiness but not too much pungency. They are very versatile oils and will appeal to most.\u00a0<\/b>We’ve used a medium intensity oil<\/a> to make these yummy Mini Olive Oil Bread Rolls<\/a>. Great for your next braai!<\/p>\n

Intense style extra virgin olive oils\u00a0are robustly flavoured with distinct bitterness and pungency. They showcase the pepperiness and intense fruit flavours of the olive. They are superb for cooking with, as well as for drizzling over salads and dipping, for those who enjoy those full-bodied characteristics.
