Moir&#8217;s rich history of delicious desserts and bakes started back in the nineteenth century when Scotsman John Moir founded a business making fruit-flavoured jellies that proved immensely popular. In fact, so successful were his jellies that the Moir&#8217;s name was acclaimed in a dozen different countries and languages around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Moir&#8217;s tried and trusted range of baking products is synonymous with home baking in South Africa and includes baking powder, essences, food colourants, glac\u00e9 cherries, glac\u00e9 fruit and fruit mixes, citrus peel, desiccated coconut, bicarbonate of soda and ready to bake cake mixes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>DID YOU KNOW?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first Moir&#8217;s jelly to be produced in South Africa came from a factory in Woodstock just after the First World War. Instantly recognised for its fine quality, it inspired the introduction of other products. By 1950 Moir&#8217;s had expanded so much that the company had to move to Ndabeni.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Inspired? Try these two recipes using the trusted Moir&#8217;s range.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Date-and-Wanut-Cake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28432\" src=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Date-and-Wanut-Cake.jpg\" alt=\"Baking with Moir's\" width=\"1000\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Date-and-Wanut-Cake.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Date-and-Wanut-Cake-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Date-and-Wanut-Cake-940x526.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Date and Walnut Cake<br \/>\n<\/strong>500 ml (2 cups) chopped pitted dates<br \/>\n5 ml (1 tsp) Moir\u2019s Bicarbonate of Soda<br \/>\n300 ml (1\u00bc cups) boiling water<br \/>\n150 g butter<br \/>\n125 ml (\u00bd cup) soft brown sugar<br \/>\n125 ml (\u00bd cup) chopped walnuts<br \/>\n500 ml (2 cups) SASKO Cake Flour, sifted<br \/>\n5 ml (1 tsp) Moir\u2019s Baking Powder, sifted<br \/>\n5 ml (1 tsp) mixed spice, sifted<br \/>\n5 ml (1 tsp) Moir\u2019s Ginger Preserve, chopped<br \/>\nWalnut halves, to decorate<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caramel Icing<\/strong><br \/>\n500 ml (2 cups) icing sugar<br \/>\n30 ml (2 Tbsp) hot water<br \/>\n15 ml (1 Tbsp) golden syrup<br \/>\n15 ml (1 Tbsp) soft brown sugar<br \/>\n2.5 ml (\u00bd tsp) Moir\u2019s Vanilla Essence<\/p>\n<p><strong>Date and Walnut Cake<\/strong><br \/>\nPlace dates and bicarb in a bowl. Pour boiling water over and set aside. Place butter and soft brown sugar in a saucepan large enough to mix all the ingredients. Heat until butter melts.<\/p>\n<p>Remove from the heat. Add dates, chopped waltnuts, flour, baking powder, mixed spice and ginger preserve. Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined.<\/p>\n<p>Spread into a baking paper-lined 20cm round cake tin. Bake at 180\u00b0C for 40 \u2013 45 minutes until the cake springs back when lightly pressed.<\/p>\n<p>Cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning onto a cooling rack. Ice with caramel icing when cold and decorate with walnuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caramel Icing<\/strong><br \/>\nSift icing sugar into a bowl. Mix together water and golden syrup. Add to icing sugar and vanilla essence, and mix to form a smooth, spreadable icing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Custard-Slices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28431\" src=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Custard-Slices.jpg\" alt=\"Baking with Moir's\" width=\"1000\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Custard-Slices.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Custard-Slices-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test10.co.za\/C\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Moirs-Custard-Slices-940x526.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2 x 400g ready-made puff pastry<\/p>\n<p><strong>Custard Slices<\/strong><br \/>\n370 ml full cream milk<br \/>\n370 ml fresh cream<br \/>\n50 g butter, cubed<br \/>\n170 ml sugar<br \/>\n80 ml Moir\u2019s Custard Powder<br \/>\n125 ml low fat milk<br \/>\n5 ml Moir\u2019s Vanilla Essence<br \/>\n6 large egg yolks<br \/>\nIcing sugar, for dusting<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 180\u00ba C.<\/p>\n<p>Roll out puff pastry and place on two lined baking trays. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool on a rack.<\/p>\n<p>Cook the milk, cream, butter and sugar over medium heat until the mixture starts to boil. Remove from the heat.<br \/>\nMix Custard powder with 125ml milk, vanilla essence and whisk into the hot mixture. Add the egg yolks one at a time while whisking. Return to the heat and whisk until custard thickens.<\/p>\n<p>Pour the custard over the pastry and top with the other pastry sheet. Press gently and refrigerate until set, preferably over night.
