This is exactly why we love the food and wine pairing evenings at the Twelve Apostles Hotel, which give guests a chance to get to know a wine estate better and to try several of the selected farm’s wines. Even better, wines are paired with a special menu for the evening, so guests enjoy a stunning meal prepared by Executive Chef Christo Pretorius and his team. The menu changes with each month, as does the wine farm, so there’s always something new and exciting. We attended the February edition of this series, which featured wines from Ormonde, a boutique estate in the Darling area, and owner Theo Basson took us through a selection of six wines during the course of the evening. Ormonde is a small team that are committed to producing well-crafted wines of superlative quality. Pockets of eroded granite type soils are selected as close as five kilometres from the cold Atlantic Ocean, at altitudes between 150 and 300 metres above sea level. There is an emphasis on varietal fruit and length of flavour, which the cool coastal climate bestows on each grape variety.

Azure Restaurant at the 12 Apostles is one of the best placed spots in Cape Town; it looks directly out over the ocean and is an intimate enough setting that one feels part of something exclusive and special. On arrival we were treated to a welcome drink from the Ormonde Ondine speciality range – the Ondine Chenin Blanc 2015, and we enjoyed this as we looked out over a gorgeous coastal sunset.

The meal kicked off with a Tuna Roll Amuse Bouche, served with tuna tartare, miso dressing, and dashi jelly, accompanied by a glass of the Ormonde Sauvignon Blanc 2015. This was followed by a dish of Baked Hens Eggs, served with asparagus, orange sweet potato, gooseberry and almond cheese, and was matched with 2013 Ormonde Chardonnay. We just loved this pairing, with the dish being unusual and delicious, and the wine an ideal accompaniment. It made us wonder why we don’t drink more wine with our breakfast eggs! Following the starter was a Smoked Ham Hock Terrine with cauliflower piccalilli, apple compote, crispy pork crackling, paired with the Ondine Cabernet Franc 2013. This varietal, not often seen on it’s own, was truly memorable.
Our main course of Springbok Loin was absolutely perfectly cooked and so tender. The multiple awarded Ormonde Shiraz 2013 was paired with this dish and the spicy notes were right on point with the venison.

With minimal space left in the belly, the dessert of a superbly light Goats Cheese Panna Cotta with beetroot sponge was ideal. This was enjoyed with Ormonde 2015 Noble Late Harvest.

The evening was peppered with interesting and yet unobtrusive notes from owner Theo, which helped us get to know the wines a little better. The evening was informative and fun with great table conversation and a relaxed but stylish feel in Azure Restaurant.

The next wine and food pairing is taking place on Friday 18 March and the featured wine will be from Kleine Zalze. Book your seats now to enjoy this fabulous Friday night out.

Friday 29 April: Steenberg

Friday 27 May: Vergelegen

Friday 24 June: Glenelly Wine Estate

Friday 29 July: Hartenburg Wine Estate

Friday 26 August: De Morgenzon Stellenbosch

Friday 30 September: Iona Wine Farm

+27 (0)21 437 9029 | restaurants@12apostles.co.za

12apostleshotel.com | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

With there being such a vast selection of wines farms in the Western Cape, and so many different wines to choose from, it can be hard to get to know which wines we most enjoy.
