How To Make Textbook Perfect French Fries

Is there anything more irresistible than the humble chip? Whether you like yours thin and crispy or slightly fat and more slap-like, there is no denying that everyone loves a cheeky chip. Here’s all you need to know about cutting, frying and making perfect French fries.

french fries

Tips for Making Perfect French Fries

Potato Choice

Firstly, you’ll need to choose the correct potato. In South Africa, we don’t get the wide varieties of potatoes the rest of the world does, so pickings are slim. However, if you use dry or floury potatoes, as opposed to waxy ones – which are better suited to boiling for a potato salad – you’re halfway to making your next French fry your best one yet.

Potato Prep

Now that you’ve got the potatoes, you’ll need to prep them. We’re partial to skinless chips, but you can leave your potatoes unpeeled – just make sure you wash and scrub them well. Slice the potato into planks measuring between 1 cm and 1½ cm, depending on how thick or thin you like your chips. Take each of these planks, and then slice them into batons or French fries. Keep them in water while you wait for your oil to warm up.

Oil Choice

When it comes to frying, you want an oil with a mild flavour and a high smoking point. Vegetable oil is your best, readily available, affordable bet, but beef dripping is the most indulgent fat to use.

Frying Technique

The technique for the best French fries requires a two-phase process of frying. Firstly, you want to blanch your chips in oil, to give them an opportunity to cook partially. The temperature of this oil is relatively low, about 140 ºC, as you don’t want to colour or crisp the chips just yet. Dry your chips to remove any excess water, place them in the oil and allow to cook for about 5 or so minutes or until they begin to soften. Remove them from the oil, and place on a couple of sheets of paper towel to cool.

The next fry is going to be a hot one, so increase the heat of your oil to about 180 ºC. Place your blanched chips in and leave them until they crisp up and get that desired crunchy, golden glow. Remove from the oil, drain on a clean stack of paper towels and season with salt immediately.

One thing to watch out for is overcrowding the pan. If you place too many chips in the oil at once, the oil temperature will drop and you’ll end up with soggy, oil-soaked chips. Instead, fry in batches to avoid this.

Now that you know how, get cracking on making the best French fries yet with our recipe.

Recipe for Perfect French Fries

Serves: 4-6 | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

1 kg potatoes, washed and dried
sunflower oil
sea salt

To Serve

ketchup
mayo
Sriracha sauce

Method

Wash and peel the potatoes, and towel dry with a sheet of kitchen towel. Cut the chips into index finger-sized pieces; try to keep the shapes as even as possible to ensure even cooking time. Tip: you can top and tail the potato to square it off, which will give more even slices.

Fill a medium-sized saucepan (or a deep-fryer) with sunflower oil; you need the oil to be about 8 cm deep, but be careful that it doesn’t come above halfway up the side of the pot. If it does, switch to a slightly larger pot. Place on a medium heat.

If you have a thermometer, use it to check the temperature – you want it to be around 140 ºC. If you don’t have a thermometer, use a raw potato to test. The chip should float, but not brown too quickly. Blanch the chips in batches in relatively cool oil for about 8 minutes until soft, but not browned. Remove from the oil and place on a roasting tray lined with paper towels and allow to cool.

Once all of the chips have been blanched, turn the heat up. Again, if you have a thermometer, use it to check the temperature – you want it to be around 180 ºC. Place a chip in the oil again to test if need be; make sure that it’s floating and beginning to brown. Fry the chips for a second time in batches for about another 6-8 minutes, or until they turn an even golden brown.

Use a slotted spoon to remove the French fries from the oil; drain on paper towel and season immediately with a generous sprinkling of Maldon salt.

Serve straight away with mayonnaise, tomato sauce or Sriracha sauce, or a mixture of all three combined.

4 Date Bark Ideas To Settle Sweet Cravings

Always craving something sweet? Same! If you want to curb your refined sugar intake, date bark will help settle those sweet cravings. With dark chocolate and nature’s caramel (dates) as the base, this energy-boosting treat satisfies sugar cravings without the crash. Bonus? You can customise it with your favourite add-ins for a unique flavour. Here are four easy variations to get you started, plus our recipe for Date Bark with Pecans & Hazelnuts.

date bark recipe

How to Make Date Bark

First things first, if you’ve never made date bark, follow these easy steps.

Step 1: Prepare your base. Flatten your pitted dates into a thin layer on parchment paper.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate. Gently melt your dark chocolate slab(s) or chocolate chips in the microwave using a heatproof bowl or bain-marie on the stovetop.
Step 3: Assemble your bark. Spread the melted chocolate over the date layer and sprinkle with your favourite toppings. Fruit and nuts are ideal.
Step 4: Chill it! Pop it into the fridge until set, then break it into pieces and enjoy!

1. Strawberry & Pistachio Date Bark

Inspired by the viral Dubai bars (but less expensive), this date bark is studded with pistachios. The tartness of strawberries balances the sweetness of dates, while pistachios add a satisfying crunch and a dose of heart-healthy fats. Plus, pistachios are rich in antioxidants, making them a great source of nutrition.

What you’ll need: pitted dates, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), dehydrated or freshly sliced strawberries and chopped pistachios.

2. Orange Zest & Almond Date Bark

Bright and zesty, this version pairs citrusy orange zest with nutty almonds for a decadent twist. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, which supports healthy skin – perfect for that summer glow. Add a sprinkle of chilli salt for contrasting flavours.

What you’ll need: pitted dates, dark chocolate, freshly grated orange zest, toasted almonds, chilli flakes and sea salt (or chilli salt).

3. Coconut & Banana

Love tropical flavours? Shredded coconut brings a chewy texture and provides healthy fats, fibre and antioxidants. This one’s perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up, especially with potassium-rich banana slices added to the mix.

What you’ll need: pitted dates, 2 sliced bananas, dark chocolate (you can use a higher percentage; the sweetness of the bananas and dates will balance the bitterness), unsweetened shredded coconut and desiccated coconut for sprinkling.

4. Date Bark with Pecans & Hazelnuts

Chocolaty and oh so nutty! This date bark is a delightfully indulgent yet healthier snack that’s super simple to make. Crunchy hazelnuts bring a Nutella-like flavour (minus the sweetness), and the sprinkle of sea salt enhances all the flavours. Hazelnuts are high in magnesium, which helps combat fatigue – perfect for powering through busy days. Nutty pecans, dried cranberries, coconut and peanut butter take this tasty treat to the next level.

date bark recipe

What you’ll need: pitted dates, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, pecans, organic peanut butter or your nut butter of choice, shredded and desiccated coconut, honey, butter and sea salt.

Natural Wine – Everything You Need To Know

There’s something deeply satisfying about a wine that speaks for itself – ‘au naturel’, no frills, just pure expression. Natural wine is just that: a rebellious cousin in the world of viticulture, wild and unpredictable yet deeply rooted in tradition. It’s a celebration of what happens when winemakers let nature take the lead. But aren’t all wines ‘natural’?

While organic and natural wines are often classed together, they’re not quite the same… Natural wine goes beyond organic farming.

What is Natural Wine?

It’s a fair question. After all, wine comes from grapes, so why wouldn’t it be natural?

Modern winemaking often involves a range of additives, from commercial yeasts to stabilisers to isinglass, sulfites and even colouring agents. Natural wine, on the other hand, strips all of that away. At its core, it’s wine made with minimal intervention: organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, wild fermentation (using native yeasts) and little to no added sulfites – only the absolute necessary is added. The goal? To let the wine reflect its origin.

Organic Wine vs. Natural Wine

While organic and natural wines are often classed together, they’re not quite the same. Organic wine refers to wine made from organically grown grapes, meaning no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers are used in the vineyard. However, organic wines can still undergo modern winemaking processes, including the addition of sulfites and commercial yeasts.

Natural wine goes beyond organic farming. It adheres to the ‘nothing added, nothing taken away’ philosophy, meaning no additives, minimal sulfites (if any) and spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. While all natural wines are organic by default, not all organic wines are natural. There are a few steps to getting it just right…

How It’s Made

Winemakers who follow natural methods work with nature rather than against it. Here are some of the practices involved in making natural wine.

  • Organic & Biodynamic Farming – Grapes are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers. Biodynamic farming goes a step further, following a holistic, ecological and sustainable approach.
  • Native Yeast Fermentation – Instead of introducing lab-grown yeasts to control fermentation, natural winemakers let the wild yeasts from the grape skins do the work. This results in more complex, unpredictable flavours.
  • Minimal Sulfites – While conventional wines use sulfites as a preservative, natural wine either forgoes them entirely or use only tiny amounts.
  • No Filtration or Fining – This means the wines may appear cloudy or have sediment, but this lack of processing preserves texture, aromatics and character.

Styles of Natural Wine

Natural wine isn’t a single style – it’s a broad category that encompasses different expressions. These are some of the most notable styles of natural wines…

  • Orange Wine – Made from white grapes that ferment with their skins, giving the wine a deep amber hue and textured tannins.
  • Pet-Nat (Pétillant Naturel) – A lightly sparkling wine made using an ancient method where fermentation finishes in the bottle, creating soft, natural bubbles.
  • Co-fermented Wines – An innovative approach where grape juice ferments alongside juices from other fruits like apples or cherries, resulting in unique flavour profiles.

Oh My Gourd! Are Pumpkins Actually Fruits, Not Veggies?

Hearty-fleshed and tough-skinned, gourds are a misunderstood bunch.

Zucchini, butternut and gem squash are all family members, but pumpkins are arguably the most popular of the 900 species – all hail the gourds. While these orange beauties are commonly eaten around the world, not many know pumpkins are fruits, not vegetables. If you’re questioning whether everything you know is a lie, rest assured, we are too.

While most people consider pumpkin to be a veg, botanists disagree.

What makes pumpkins fruits?

One thing you should know about the gourd family – their roots run deep and spread wide. Gourds, also known as the Cucurbitaceae family, commonly refer to plant species with a hardened shell, but that’s not true for all members.

Pumpkins are often the autumnal mascots – we’re looking at you Pumpkin-spiced Lattes and Thanksgiving pumpkin pies – for this diverse bunch. While most people consider pumpkin to be a veg, botanists disagree. Simply put, fruits are derived from flower and seed-bearing plants, whereas vegetables are traditionally classified as tubers, or the leaves, stems and roots of the plant.

With pumpkins being naturally sweet – the same reason they’re a popular addition to holiday desserts – it kind of makes sense that they would be classified as fruits. Well, that and the fact that they have a hard exterior, and contain seeds and flowers. In fact, zucchini flowers bear a striking resemblance to pumpkin blossoms. Still not convinced that pumpkins are fruits? The evidence is in the name…

‘Pumpkin’ derives from the German word pepon, which means ‘large melon’ in English. That’s right – besides being a vegetable-masquerading fruit, pumpkins are also related to watermelon, well, melons in general.

If we had to compare the two, pumpkins and melons are like apples to oranges. Besides the obvious shared trait (a hard exterior), melons are distinctly thought of as a summer fruit snack, while pumpkins signify the start of autumn in most corners of the world, and are commonly incorporated into savoury dishes.

‘Pumpkin’ derives from the German word ‘pepon’.

When it comes to the origins of pumpkins and gourds, this unpredictable bunch have a diverse background. Archaeological evidence, dating from 13,000 BCE, suggests that gourds were among the first plants to be domesticated by humans for practical and ceremonial purposes. Ancient inhabitants recognised the usefulness of gourds for storing water, carrying food, making utensils, crafting musical instruments, and other versatile uses (besides Jack-O Lanterns).

Historians initially believed that bottle gourds – one of the oldest types – were native to Asia, but newer scientific findings point to Africa. However, there are two distinctive subspecies originating in Asia and Africa. Through trade and exploration, Asian gourds spread across continents and reached the Americas thousands of years ago.

Pumpkin Dishes From Around the World

Besides pumpkins, squash and zucchini, watermelon, melons and cucumber also form part of the gourd family. (The plot twists just keep coming.)

In Western parts of the world, pumpkin is enjoyed in soups and desserts like country pumpkin pie. The skin is often removed, but when ovenroasted or prepared over the coals, the hard exterior becomes soft and the entire fruit can be consumed, including the seeds.

In South Africa, it’s prepared as a side dish and often served alongside hearty stews; the pumpkin is cooked down in water, mashed, and then seasoned with cinnamon sticks. It’s prepared similarly when making pampoenkoekies (pumpkin fritters); eggs, flour, sugar, salt, ground cinnamon, vanilla essence and milk are beaten to create a batter, which is spooned into a pan and shallow fried in oil – much like crumpets. When making Isijingi (pumpkin maize porridge), steamed pumpkin is mashed together with cooked mielie pap (maize meal), and can be served sweet or savoury.

In West African cuisine, especially in Nigeria and Ghana, gourd seeds from the egusi melon are essential in the making of egusi soup, which involves grinding the seeds and cooking them in a mixture of water and oil; pumpkin and spinach leaves are often incorporated.

Though we feel betrayed knowing that pumpkins are fruits and not veggies, the one truth we can rely on is that the rest of the world loves this gorgeous gourd as much as we do.

Why You Should Add Purple Produce To Your Plate

It is no secret that colourful foods are good for you. ‘Superfood’ status is usually awarded to red, blue and purple fruits and vegetables – think pomegranates, goji berries, blueberries and acai (red velvet cake only counts if you make it with beetroot).

While green veggies have always hogged the limelight for being the most nutritious, eating from a range of colours ensures you get everything you need for a healthy diet.

Colour is good for you

The health benefits of purple vegetables and fruits, as well as foods that are on the red and blue spectrum, include lowered cholesterol and increased immunity, to name a few – but what’s the active ingredient behind all of this?

Anthocyanins are the powerful plant compounds responsible not only for the royal hues, but also for the inflammation-busting and blood pressure-lowering goodness in common foods such as plums, red cabbage, figs, beetroot and berries.

It is the mighty anthocyanins in red grape skins that turn red wines a gorgeous garnet colour, and also the reason why red wine is a good antioxidant – in moderation, of course.

This natural pigment is present in both the skins and the flesh of many fruits and vegetables, and is sensitive to heat, so it’s best to either cook it quickly to preserve the goodness and colour, or eat it raw if possible.

The_Table_-brinjal

Add purple to your plate

If your aim is to eat more red, purple and blue foods, there are many options gracing grocery store shelves. Look out for rhubarb, aubergine (the skin is high in anthocyanins), radishes, purple carrots, purple beans, purple mangetout peas, red onions, purple micro herbs, and even edible purple flowers. Reap the benefits with these recipes…

All About Shrove Tuesday, AKA Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday is a day in either February or March, observed traditionally by some Christian sects. The exact date, however, changes every year as it is determined by Easter, which, as we know, changes every year due to the fact that Easter is always scheduled to fall on the Sunday that follows the full moon on or after March 21 – also known as the ‘Spring Equinox’ in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the beginning of Lent, which historically forbade the consumption of fats like butter, milk and eggs. The meaning of the word ‘shrove’ even denotes the act of atoning for one’s sins.

avo flapjacks

It colloquially became known as ‘Pancake Day’ because many families would throw together pancakes – the most obvious way to use all of the outlawed items.

In some places (we’re looking at you New Orleans, with your wild parties on Bourbon Street), it is known as ‘Mardi Gras’ or ‘Fat Tuesday’, as it is technically seen as the last day of indulgence before Lent. Traditionally, Lent always takes place 47 days before Easter, but nowadays, it is not so strict. Most modern followers will give up a bad habit or seemingly unhealthy foods.

While fully entrenched as a Christian institution, there are some beliefs that the practice of eating pancakes may have originated from a Pagan tradition, where eating warm, round pancakes was a way to symbolise the sun and welcome in spring.

Along with eating delicious pancakes, some nations honour the day by holding pancake races – where you race to the finish line while flipping a pancake – or even pancake-flipping contests to see who can flip their pancake the highest. However you choose to celebrate Shrove Tuesday is fine by us, as long as you uphold the tradition of eating…

Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable Chart for South Africa

It’s something we’re told all the time, to eat with the seasons. But why exactly should we eat seasonally? Well, there are numerous reasons. Firstly, abundance – in-season produce costs much less, as it’s more readily available and doesn’t have to be flown from halfway across the world. Secondly, it tastes better. It’s been ripened (hopefully) naturally by the weather conditions it’s most suited to and hasn’t been refrigerated for extended periods of time. Lastly, it offers you variety – different vegetables are available throughout the year. Use this Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable Chart for South Africa as a guideline and find inspiration in cooking with something new each season.

How to Host an Oscar Viewing Party From Home

Award season is in full swing, and the Oscars are the perfect excuse to gather your film-loving friends for a glamorous night in. Whether you dress in your best attire and roll out the red carpet, or host a pyjama party with movie snacks is up to you. Here’s how to throw the ultimate Oscar viewing party at home.

Oscar viewing party

Set the Scene

A full-scale Hollywood production isn’t necessary, but a few stylish touches can elevate the evening. Think moody lighting, a chic colour palette (black, gold and red never fail) and a few movie-inspired decor elements. Set up a DIY photo booth with fun props and faux awards; light some candles to create that effortlessly cool ambience.

Dress Up

Encourage guests to dress up just enough to make it feel special – think cocktail attire, a statement accessory or even pyjamas with a fashionable twist. A ‘Come as Your Favourite Nominee’ theme is always fun, whether dressed as the sandworm from Dune or Glinda from Wicked. Keep it fun!

Serve the Best Snacks

No party is complete without a delicious spread – this is your chance to get creative. Elevate the classic movie snacks – think popcorn cooked in truffle oil, gourmet nachos or classic milkshakes. Themed cocktails (like a ‘Golden Negroni’ or a ‘Cinematic Spritz’) will keep things exciting. If you’re throwing a fancy Oscar viewing party, impress friends with Champagne along some sweet and savoury treats.

Oscar viewing party
Oscar viewing party

Try these Fresh Oysters with Caviar Pickled Ginger Vinaigrette or these Billionaire Bars

And the Winner Is…

Make the night interactive with Oscar ballots – have everyone fill out their winner predictions before the show starts; the person with the most correct guesses wins a fun prize (mini Cap Classique bottles, a movie gift card or just bragging rights). Add a drinking game or bingo card featuring classic Oscar tropes (tearful speeches, awkward audience reactions, unnecessary musical numbers, terrible jokes) for some extra entertainment.

Keep It Cute & Cosy

Yes, it’s the biggest night in Hollywood, but you’re still watching from your couch. Ensure there’s ample seating with cosy throws and cushions, so guests can settle in for the long haul. With all the speeches, performances and commercial breaks, you’ll want to be comfy.

Roll the Credits

Wrap up the night with an award show of your own. Hand out fun, faux awards to your guests – Best Dressed, Most Dramatic Reaction or Best Fake Acceptance Speech. It’s the perfect way to end things on a high note and keep the entertainment going.

The Origins of Milk Tart plus Recipes

When you think ‘South African desserts’, Peppermint Crisp Tart or Malva Pudding are going to come up as favourites, but none seem quintessentially more South African than the humble Milk Tart. The flavour has become so synonymous with South African culture, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a South African who doesn’t love it.

Custard Tarts Around the World

It should come as no surprise, though, that the idea of a set milk or cream tart is not unique to South Africa, in fact, almost every country has a version of a similar dessert. Whether it be a French Flan Patissier, a Portuguese Pasteis de Nata or an Italian Torte della Nonna, there are definite similarities the world over.

The major difference in comparison of Milk Tart to these, is the absence of lots of eggs in the custard. The result is the lighter, more milky style of set ‘custard’ that we love.

milk tart recipe

Who Makes it Best?

There are a lot of global versions of this pud, but even here in SA, there are various kinds of Milk Tart and what you were brought up on often affects what you think is ‘the real deal’.

For example, there’s a classic and more Dutch version of an oven-baked Melktert, and then, there is its contemporary – the fridge set one. Pastry bases vary from the crumbled cookie kind to a rolled out biscuity base or even puff pastry. How ever you choose to indulge it is up to you.

What we love about Milk Tart is really its simplicity.

Our top honours go to the fridge version – a smooth, creamy milk custard set in a crispy biscuit base. It has just the right amount of jiggle and just a whisper of cinnamon on top. It’s perfection and that’s all there is to it.

Inspiration Station

According to The South African Milk Tart Collection cookbook, the roots of this dessert can be traced back to the earliest Dutch cookbook, Een Notabel Boecxken van Cokeryen (1514) by Thomas van der Noot (a mouthful to pronounce).

In there is his version of a Mattentaart, a Belgian curd cake set atop flaky puff pastry, which is said to be the inspo behind our current day fave. How we got here is really just details, the fact is, Milk Tart is a national treasure and we love it!

4 Milk Tart Inspired Recipes

We use one of our favourite flavours ever to create 4 tasty recipes.

Milk Tart Mousse Cookie Cups

milk tart recipe

If you have a sweet tooth or are baking for someone who does, then this is the recipe for you. An utterly decadent triple chocolate and nut cookie base, filled with a light and airy mousse flavoured with Tant’ Sannie se Melktert liqueur. It’s a few of your favourite treats all melded together to make one seriously tasty dessert.

The crunchy base forms the perfect vessel for the mousse; sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon and serve. Your guests will love them.

Hot tip: If you can get a silicone muffin mould, it makes creating the cups foolproof. A regular muffin tin needs to be greased exceptionally well, possibly even lined; it can be tricky to get the cups out otherwise because of the sugar in the mix.

Recipe for Milk Tart Mousse Cookie Cups

Classic Milk Tart

milk tart recipe

As mentioned above, Milk Tart is a South African classic. It is, of course, the inspiration behind Tant’ Sannie se Melktert liqueur, so it has to be good. It makes sense then to make a regular milk tart all the more delish by adding its namesake liqueur.

This milk tart recipe is foolproof and will be the one you come back to make again and again.

Hot tip: The pastry base includes baking powder, which puffs it up and forms a lovely biscuity base; for that reason, make sure when you are lining your baking tin that you make it very thin – thinner than you think, it will hold up well.

Milk Tart Eclairs

melk tert

Eclairs are one of those pastries that you can pull together on short notice with ingredients you’ll probably already have in the house. What makes them really special, though, is what goes inside. These have a double dose of deliciousness in the form of a custard made with Tant’ Sannie se Melktert plus an airy whipped Chantilly cream.

Top with white chocolate ganache and watch them disappear.

Hot tip: Dolly up with a sprinkle of gold dust for extra pizzaz.

Recipe for Melktert Eclairs

Milk Tart Panna Cotta with Coffee Caramel Drizzle

milk tart

There is something so beautifully simple and elegant about a vanilla panna cotta, and this classic cold dessert is perfect for the searing mid-summer heat. Panna cotta is one of the most universally loved Italian desserts, and the real vanilla flavour combined with a delicious coffee caramel makes this dish a natural fit for the fragrant spice and creamy notes of our very own, Tant’ Sannie se Melktert liqueur.

It’s the finest traditional flavours of Italy and South Africa meeting in a thoroughly modern dessert that is both decadent and refreshing.

Hot tip: You can make your panna cotta in a mould or in a pretty ramekin if you have any concerns about de-moulding. It’s just as tasty either way.

Recipe for Melktert Panna Cotta with Coffee Caramel Drizzle

Coconut Condensed Milk Tart

milk tart recipe

This version is based on mom’s recipe, but with a few twists and turns to kick things up a notch. We’ve added condensed milk because who doesn’t like condensed milk? Plus, we’ve sprinkled the top with toasted coconut for a little crunch – this is, of course, optional if you’re a purist. It’s a twist on a classic, but it’s still most definitely a good ol’ milk tart.

Our Favourite Foodie Movies & Droolworthy Scenes

While movies are a great way to unwind and escape reality for a moment, we’re often more concerned with what snacks we’re going to take into the cinema with us. But, sometimes, a beautiful thing happens… when a movie features a mouth-watering scene or two, then we’re fully enthralled. Two of our favourite things all rolled up into one? There’s nothing better. We run through some of our favourite foodie movies and mouthwatering scenes.

The Taste of Things

The Taste of Things is a French romantic drama directed by Trần Anh Hùng. The film follows the story of Eugenie, an esteemed cook, and Dodin, her boss. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century France, the cultural shifts and political upheavals of the era are masterfully captured, while themes of love and ambition are explored.

Eugenie and Dodin’s journey is a poignant portrayal of the complexities of human relationships and the enduring power of passion and creativity. Nominated for an Oscar for its stunning visuals and compelling storytelling, the movie celebrates the artistry of gastronomy and the profound impact it has on our lives.

The Menu

The Menu gave the expression “Yes, chef!” an entirely new meaning. Directed by Mark Mylod and produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, this twisted yet comedic film skewers the pretentiousness of today’s food culture of over-conceptualised dishes, deconstructed beyond recognition, and the elitists who would pay a pretty penny for a taste.

In the movie, a group of wealthy diners are promised a unique culinary experience at a remote Swiss restaurant. As the night dwindles, the true nature of the menu is revealed, leaving the guests at the mercy of Chef Slowik, played by an austere Ralph Fiennes. The theatrics of Chef Slowik’s emphatic and high-handed claps signalling the start of the next course, coupled with the team of militant chefs awaiting instruction and the naive guests, capture the audience’s attention. Anya Taylor-Joy as Margot plays a brilliant performance, and Chef Slowik’s right hand, Elsa, played by Hong Chau, is exceptional.

Suspenseful and oddly humorous throughout, the movie features many food scenes, from the tortillas containing each diner’s secret to the bread course sans bread. The marshmallow scene near the end is arguably the most iconic, and to be honest, we haven’t looked at s’mores the same way since. A must-see for foodies and psychological thriller film fans!

Eat Pray Love

Based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, Eat Pray Love follows the journey of Elizabeth (Julia Roberts), a woman who embarks on a quest for self-discovery. In Italy, she indulges in the joy of simple pleasures, including the iconic scene where she relishes a plate of perfectly cooked pasta. Amidst the vibrant streets of Rome, Elizabeth learns to savour each moment and embrace the art of living. Julia Roberts delivers a captivating performance, portraying Elizabeth’s transformation with authenticity and charm. Through her culinary adventures, she discovers the power of nourishing both body and soul.

The Help

Set in racially divided 1960s Mississippi, The Help sheds light on the lives of African American maids working for white families. Viola Davis shines as Aibileen Clark, a compassionate maid who forms an unlikely bond with Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone), a young white woman and aspiring writer. Among the film’s poignant moments is Minnie’s (Octavia Spencer) infamous fried chicken scene. Octavia Spencer’s portrayal of Minnie earned her critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, highlighting the film’s exploration of race, class, and friendship amidst societal upheaval. While a tear-jerker, the film has loads of hilarious scenes, including the scene where Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howards’s character) eats Minnie’s ‘chocolate’ pie – if you know, you know.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson never fails to delight audiences with aesthetically pleasing visuals and stellar cinematography. This film follows the life of Gustave H. – played by Ralph Fiennes – the concierge at the European ski resort called ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’. Gustave is dead set on ensuring the needs of each hotel guest are catered to, from replacing fitted sheets to the sexual gratification of elderly women. When one of his lovers (Tilda Swinton’s character) mysteriously dies, Gustave inherits a valuable painting and becomes the prime suspect in the murder case.

Apart from the quick-witted humour, the charm of Ralph Fiennes and just about every A-list actor in this movie – one of the best scenes is when one of the prison guards survey the food entering the jail by cutting into it with a knife. Ordinary items like a loaf of bread, sausage and cheese are torn apart but when a rose pink, ribboned Mendl’s box containing what appears to be beautifully decorated confectionaries, makes its way onto the conveyor belt, the guard hesitates as it’s too pretty to demolish – unknowingly clearing jailbreak weapons disguised as cake.

Fans were even granted the secret recipe for Mendl’s Courtesan’s au Chocolat.

Goodfellas

This iconic crime drama film, directed by Martin Scorsese, is sheer brilliance from start to finish. The movie tells the story of Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta), who falls in with the wrong crowd at a young age and joins the Italian-American mafia in New York City, eventually rising through the ranks of the criminal organisation.

One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when Paulie (played by Paul Sorvino) slices a clove of garlic using a razor blade as he prepares dinner – a pasta course followed by a metre of fish – for the inmates. Bobby Darin’s ‘Somewhere Beyond the Sea’ plays in the background as Henry (Liotta) narrates that Paulie sliced the garlic “so thin that it used to liquefy in the pan with a little oil.” It’s one of the best food movie scenes and details the respect involved in Italian-American cooking, as depicted by Paulie’s (Sorvino) precision. Robert de Niro means business and Joe Pesci delivers an ever-amusing performance.

Marie Antoinette

Sofia Coppola’s take on Marie Antoinette is a veritable feast for the eyes and stomach – it did everything to highlight the excess and gluttony that were the hallmarks of her reign as queen, wife to monarch King Louis XVI, in the most decadent way possible.

As food scenes go, these are completely over the top – colourful tarts, pies and petit fours; lavish layer cakes, towers of gold macarons and intricate pastries. All set against a backdrop of gilded gold and glitz, enough to put Versailles to shame.

She might have made herself really unpopular when she famously declared “Let them eat cake,” in response to poverty and a shortage of staples such as bread, but it’s hard not to get caught up and be entranced by the gal who dined on pastries and sipped on Champagne while obsessing over shoes and clothing. If you don’t rush out and stuff your face with eclairs after watching this, then you’re dead inside.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a pretty perfect film overall, but we’re here for the scene where Vincent Vega (played by John Travolta) takes Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) out for dinner. At a 20s-style diner, Wallace orders a $5 milkshake – vanilla, a Martin and Lewis – to Vega’s horror. However, all is resolved when he tries it and declares it’s “A pretty f***ing good shake.”

Secret Life of Pets

There is an early scene with Chloe, the cat, where she is trying to resist the roast chicken in the fridge – this easily represents all of us trying to eat healthily. However, the major food scene is when Max and Duke get lost and find themselves in a sausage factory, Wiener Kingdom, where they eat to their heart’s content. Wouldn’t we all love to swim in a sea of sausages, eating our way as we go?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Professor McGonagall taps her spoon against her wine goblet and Professor Dumbledore rises and declares “Let the feast begin.” The camera shows the Hogwarts dining hall from above, with food magically appearing on the tables (if only this was really possible, dinner time would be so much easier). The camera then pans across tables laden with bowls of salads, chips, corn on the cob, roasts, pies, fruit, desserts, and more – this is the Start-of-Term Feast, also known as the Welcoming Feast. We see young Harry and his crew marvelling at the feast, and, who could forget a baby-faced Ron Weasley – chicken drumstick in each hand, appreciatively tucking in.

It’s one of many iconic dining hall scenes in the Harry Potter series, and they get more elaborate as you go (check out the Halloween one too). It’s what we imagined boarding school to be like, but the kind where wizards and unicorns exist.

Parent Trap

A baby-faced Lindsay Lohan unknowingly started a cult food combo when her characters realised that they both enjoyed peanut butter and Oreos together. Aside from these girls not realising they had the exact same face, it was shocking that Oreos dipped into peanut butter weren’t more popular.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

A yellow cab pulls up outside Tiffany & Co. on 5th Avenue, New York; Moon River is playing in the background and Audrey Hepburn steps out dressed head-to-toe in Givenchy – thus begins one of the most iconic films of all time.

Looking at every inch, movie star, Hepburn, peers into the window of Tiffany & Co., while taking a coffee and a pastry (we think a croissant) out of a bag to eat. While it may not be the most luscious of food scenes ever, there is something about it that makes us want to get dolled up in our finery and tuck into French pastries.

Even though Marilyn Monroe was tipped to play this role originally, we can’t think of anyone better than Hepburn to bring such grace and glamour to Holly Golightly.

Wallace and Gromit Curse of The Were-Rabbit

We can all relate to loveable Wallace with his cheese-loving tendencies, with a line of his becoming our personal motto “I’m just crackers about cheese!” Gromit, Wallace’s canine best friend, even uses a Stinking Bishop to revive Wallace after he passes out from his Were-Rabbit activities.

Lady and the Tramp

Another animated classic, with a classic dish thrown in for good measure – who could forget Lady and the Tramp sharing a mutual strand of spaghetti… the romance of it all! Not only does this scene make us want to run out and eat bowlfuls of Spaghetti Meatballs, but it also makes us want to go out and rescue all the dogs. Romance, Italian food and cute pups – it’s a trifecta for success.

Our Best Food Movies

The Hundred-Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey is one of our all-time favourite foodie movies. It’s a visually stunning tale of the collision of two cultures and cuisines. French chic meets Indian spice, and the result is both comedic and dramatic, with a dose of beautiful ingredients and dishes thrown in for good measure. You’ll almost be able to smell the tandoori oven in your lounge.

Helen Mirren is convincing as a stuffy French restaurateur, who comes up against competition when an Indian family moves in across the road and opens up shop. If the vistas of stunning French countryside don’t make you want to pack up and move to France, we don’t know what will.

Ratatouille

Dedicated entirely to food, this flick is about a determined rat who follows his dreams to become a Michelin-starred chef – Ratatouille is hard not to like. We especially loved the scene where mean food critic, Anton Ego, is transported back to his childhood memories when he eats Ratatouille’s ratatouille. If you love a heartwarming story, then this one will definitely become one of your go-to foodie movies.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (2005)

This remake of the Roald Dahl classic book is weird and wonderful from start to finish and has no shortage of stellar food scenes. The Land of Candy scene, with a river of melted chocolate and marshmallow trees, is certainly one of the best and will have you pausing to grab your own bag of sweets.

An honourable mention is the chewing gum scene, where Violet Beauregard chews Wonka’s Three-Course Dinner chewing gum, and tastes tomato soup, roast beef and blueberry pie, before turning into an actual blueberry herself. Shame!

Chef

Honestly, all of Chef is pretty much ‘food porn’ – starting off with that sizzling grilled cheese sarmie scene. What looks like at least 4 different kinds of cheeses are sandwiched between buttery slices of bread and toasted perfection – it’s gooey, golden and magical.

But when Carl (Jon Favreau) and Martin (John Leguizamo) make a Cubano – complete with roasted pork, ham and Swiss cheese – we all had a little moment. Foodie movie gold.

Julie and Julia

As a food lover at heart, cooking your way through Julia Child’s The Art of French Cookery seems like a scarily good task to undertake. The movie Julie & Julia details the main character’s (Julie) attempt to do this, blogging about it as she goes. It gives great insight into one of cooking’s greatest mavens too. This is one of the best food movies for foodies and cinephiles.

Chocolat

The whole movie is a sweet tooth’s dream – especially when they zoom in on the melty chocolate. A young Johnny Depp as a gypsy, who sails into town, is not bad either. Chocolat is a story with a little bit of magic and a lot of delicious-looking confectionaries. We also love the mystery of Juliette Binoche’s character and her French je ne sais quoi, which just makes everything seem so much more effortlessly chic.
