Edible Butter Olive Oil Candles
These edible butter olive oil candles are a show-stopper for your table, perfect for dipping veggies and breaking bread with friends and family. Each flicker invites guests to savour starters in a truly unique and delicious way.
Ingredients
250 g salted butter
1 head of garlic
1 Tbsp (15 ml) African Gold Extra Virgin Olive Oil + extra to drizzle
A pinch of salt
1 Tbsp (5 ml) fresh herbs (thyme, oregano, basil, or rosemary)
1 x 250 ml paper cup (alternatively, use cling wrap, a ramekin, or a small bowl)
1 food-safe, edible candle wick (organic hemp/beeswax)
Fresh baguette or your favourite bread
Method
Preheat the oven to 200 °C.
Soften the butter at room temperature in a mixing bowl.
Cut off the top of the garlic bulb, place it on a piece of tin foil, drizzle with African Gold Extra Virgin Olive Oil, sprinkle with salt, wrap the garlic bulb with the tin foil, and bake for 45–60 minutes, until soft.
Cool the roasted garlic, then squeeze the cloves into the softened butter.
Mix the African Gold Extra Virgin Olive Oil, salt, and herbs; mix until well combined.
There are a few ways to set your candle:
- Cut a small hole in the bottom of the paper cup, string the wick through, and fill with the butter mixture, ensuring the wick is centred, then refrigerate until firm.
- Spoon the butter mix onto a piece of cling wrap, place the wick in the middle, and roll up into a cylinder, secure both ends tightly and refrigerate until firm.
- Spoon the mixture into your ramekin or bowl, set the wick securely down the middle and refrigerate until firm.
Once set, remove it from the fridge and unmould the candle if using a paper cup. If using cling wrap, remove the candle from the wrapping, slice off one end to flatten, or slice into thick rounds. If using a ramekin or bowl, place it directly on the table or your breadboard.
Trim the wick if it is too long and place the candle on a serving plate.
To serve, light the candle, allow the butter to melt slightly and dip bread for a luxurious, flavourful experience that’s distinctly African Gold.
